Good, Bad and Buggy!!
We spent two nights at the Castle Kona Bali Kai before moving into a time share unit which we were to use for a week. The location was great because of its proximity to the activities that we needed to participate in, namely our daughter's wedding. Our condo was not clean, however and most upsetting was the fact that there were hundreds of bugs. We cannot name all of the critters that scurried all over the place but among them were roaches and other hard shelled bugs. They were on the floors, walls and countertops. We were happy to be able to move out of there after two nights and hope that we do not transport those bugs home with us. Our time share unit is also in Hawaii but we find no bugs in it. We would not recommend the Castle Kona Bali Kai to our friends and will not plan on staying there again.

Peaceful & nicely out of town-perfect!!!
It was wonderful, just what I needed quite, away from town but not to far,no screaming little children, or at least non I could hear. my view was kinda ugly but I wasnt there for a view. I was there to relaxe, and thats just what I got. I think that it was so much better to stay here than at a hotel, because its like your own little house. I would stay there again.

Bail Kai
Hotel was nice, but there was only a "pay for services" maid service. $10 if you want fresh towles. And you can get pool towles from the front desk...Except when I went at 10 AM (not long after the pool opened), they were out for the day.

Good Value - Choose your Unit Wisely
We had a partial ocean view studio suite - the partial ocean view was nice but the noise from traffic on Ali'i Drive right off our balcony made the view not worth it! The condo was older but adequate in all other respects. Would go again to the Bali Kai but would take a Mountainside Unit specifying a building farthest away from Ali'i Drive rather than partial ocean view - ask for a building at the back of the complex nearest the mountain - completly off the major road that runs by complex that separates the beach side units from the mountainside units. The complex has no dining facilities but well stocked kitchens - we cooked most of the time. Good parking, nice yard area between buildings, quiet, other thatn traffic noise, and comfortable.

Excellent beachfront location
Very friendly, efficient checkin, easy parking and at 2.5 miles, perfect distance from town. Room was supposed to receive maid service every 4 days, received it once in 14 days. New sliders in my unit (#207)made the lanai a pleasure to use and kept down noise when closed. Unfortunately the unit upstairs had old sliders which were very noisy and in constant use in the evening. Fantastic view from lanai, great ocean breezes. Washer/dryer and all other unit contents fine. Lots of surf action because it's at the entrance to Banyan surf break. Sea turtles, spinner dolphins, distant whales all viewed daily. Traffic flow on Ali'i is much improved since a couple of all-way stops signs were installed. Sunset Mai Tais at Kona Inn can't be beat. Excellent new fresh dinners at Lava Java, and Boston Basil's still the friendliest pasta place in town. Lots of very hazy days, mostly due to Kilauea's vents; only one or two crystal clear days. Kona's waters can't be beat for clear, calm snorkeling.

Short drive from hotel
Make the drive over a terrible road to Mahaiula Beach in Kekaha Kai State Park. Beautiful gold sand beach, plenty of shade. Then put on your sneakers and hike the 1/4 mile A'a trail to the single most beautiful beach on the island: Makalawena. White sand dunes, body surfing, and a fresh water grotto back behind the beach to wash off the salt.

Very nice and great value!
Kona is a one of the best islands hands down. Bali Kai is a nicely located accomodation if you would like to be near Kona center but not in it. It is biking and walking distance to snorkeling, surfing, and bars and restaurants. We enjoyed it a lot. It can be noisy during off season when there can be renovating going on.
