Outstanding!

The Fairmont Orchid was wonderful! A friend had been in Kona on business and had stopped at the hotel to check it out. She told us it was everything she had heard it to be, and when we arrived, we found it certainly was. Very peaceful and restful. The grounds are beyond gorgeous. The restaurants are terrific. It was a wonderful vacation!

Highly recommend the Hawaii Forest and Trail stargazing tour! They provide the parkas - but make sure you pack socks! It's cold at that elevation!

Luxury in Paradise

Top class hotel with everything you could want for a luxury holiday in paradise. A car though is essential to access local amenities as well as to explore the delights of Hawaii (The Big Island). The hotel staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel grounds are amazing. Don't miss the sea turtles that come ashore on the sea front of the hotel.

Great place to forget about work and destress

Our family spent a week at the Orchid and everyone had a great time. The Gold Floor was really worth the upcharge. You have a separate private check-in, drinks throughout the day, food morning and evening and your own concierge for the floor. Plus free valet parking and wireless access. Taking all these benefits into account it makes staying on the Gold Floor a great value. We all really enjoyed the Spa Without Walls and having a massage in a private cabana near one of the resorts waterfalls. Was not very impressed by the spa locker room amenities, but the massage itself was excellent. Overall we had a wonderful time and would go back again.

You never have to leave the resort

The hotel is beautiful and is one of the few places on the big island with direct beach access. The hotel has a lagoon where you can snorkel, paddle boat, canoe. They rent all the gear at the hotel, so you never have leave the resort. The resort caters to luxury travelers but is also very kid-friendly.

SUPERB ACCOMODATIONS BUT MEALS WILL BREAK THE BANK!

The Fairmont Orchid is a gorgeous, beautiful and luxurious property with immediate beach access and great snorkeling. The location (as most of the other resorts) are 20-40 minutes from the airport and any other facilities and towns. Therefore, if you plan to stay and eat all meals at the Fairmont, it will cost you dearly (for a family of 4). Breakfast prob $55-75, lunch $60-80, dinner $100-125+! Oh, and drinks at the pool are $6-12 each! We ate a few meals there but mostly stocked up at stores (cereal/lunch items and drinks) and traveled 30 minutes for local restaurants. The staff is extremely courteous and everywhere - main complaint is that we had to wait long times between ordering and getting food (usually at the lounge for the "tapas" deserts). Overall, I don't think you will be disappointed but I wish the resort would be sensitive to food/drink prices as I believe they are unreasonable - even for Hawaii.

Actually, minimum 25 minute drive to nearby Waimea for some local restaurants. Get basics (and beer) at Target south of airport and keep in the room. Save your $$ for nice dinners!

A gorgeous resort with first-class service

I recently stayed at all three of the Hyatt Regency properties in Hawaii, and the Fairmont Orchid outshines all of them (though only by the slimmest of margins over the magnificent Grand Hyatt Kauai). The public areas at the Fairmont contain lush vegetation, elegant architecture, abundant waterfalls, and many lobby areas in which to sit and admire the beauty. My room was just a standard resort-view room, but it had a better ocean view than most "partial ocean view" rooms. It was also very spacious and accommodating, with a particularly impressive bathroom that contained lots of marble and two separate showers. The breakfast buffet at the Fairmont is excellent, and you can get the discounted price of $24.20 (including tax and gratuity) if you pay for it when you check in. I didn't eat lunch or dinner at the hotel, so I can't comment on the restaurants beyond the breakfast. I did look at the menus for other meals, and I noticed that some of the exact same dishes were offered at both the fancy restaurant and the more casual one, but at significantly different prices. The service at the hotel also merits praise. Everyone was very attendant and conscientious, without being overbearing. My stay at the Fairmont was wonderful in every way. Highly recommended.

Perfect week in Paradise

We booked a Gold Floor room and it was well worth the additional expense. The incredible level of service started when we arrived at the valet they asked our name and immediately knew who we were and that we were staying on the Gold Floor. We bypassed the regular registration desk and were brought right up to the 6th floor Gold Floor for a private check-in with the Gold Floor concierge. Whatever we needed it was a simple request and it was taken care of. The moring breakfast and afternoon canapes and drinks were perfect. The only thing that would make the Orchid better would be to improve the Spa faclities. The massage huts near the water falls are amazing and very relaxing, but the "locker room" facilities of the spa need to be upgraded to make it a truely world class Spa. We will be going back to the Orchid, and hopefully soon!

Fairmont Orchid

Stayed for one night and found the beachside, lounge and concierge services far below adequate. All services (except bell and front desk) were exceptionally slow. I was shocked to find the concierge downright rude and not sharp. When the general manager, [...], stepped in to arrange golf clubs, he forgot to do it (even after I confirmed with him twice). Fortunately the golf course provided clubs which I believe the Fairmont ultimately paid for but still, what a hassle that caused a late tee time. The property is gorgeous and well situated. The weather was fabulous all week with no bugs. Fantastic snorkeling. I believe though when you're staying in a $1200 per night room, services should come with it. I've never had these problems with 4Seasons or Grand Hyatt.

Get away from the resort. A few sandwiches and non-alcoholic drinks can get you into the $75 range easily on property. Instead, stop by a local small market and make sandwiches... picnics on the beach away from everyone is the way to go. Much more economical and enjoyable.
