STAY AWAY!

The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is very disappointing. The first room we stayed in smelled very strongly of mildew and there were brown smears over the carpet that we realized were from squished cockroaches. We saw two live ones on the carpet the second day. I have been to the Hawaiian Islands five times and have never seen a roach in my room before. The management did move us to a cleaner, non-smelly room on the fourth of our five nights and they did not charge us for the upgrade. The hotel itself is empty. On most evenings the common areas, such as the bar and the terrace restaurant, were totally empty. There was a paid musician singing to no one. We tried to go to the Coast Grille, their "fancy" restaurant" for dinner on Wednesday night at 6:30 but it was locked and empty. The parking lot had very few cars. The buildings need paint and a serious cleaning. For example, the umbrellas on the terrace restaurant are covered with bird poop. Not appetizing. On the plus side, the staff was friendly. There were lots of wild cats that were cute and the beach is beautiful. If you have stayed at a resort such as the Hyatt in Maui, you will be very sad to stay here. Stay somewhere else.

There is not much to eat at the hotel. Queen's Market is about 12 minutes south and there are good places to eat there. There is a Macaroni Grill, Roy's, and Sansei (Japanese). All good.

Don't nickel and dime

Paying $650 per night and then having to pay extra for internet is pathetic. The web says they have internet, but not that you have to pay $11.95 extra for it. If Starbucks can provide internet for free, "grand hotels" that charge $450 per night and up should absolutely have it for free too! Shower was old tile, old glass, and the fixture was coming apart. Also, bottled water in the room is a must for a top hotel. And $20 per day for valet parking? They have no shuttle from the airport, so everyone has to have a car! Either add it into the price of the room in advance, or just waive the fee-either way, they turn things into a nickel and dime experience. If you get a massage, don't have it in the "spa", which is a hair salon that has a side room for massages. At $140, nobody wants to listen to the chatter of "salon talk".

Needs Room Updates, But overal Good

The property has the second best location on kohala...second only to its sister property (Mauna Kea...which you will have access to!). Good beach but rough surf. The rooms have obviously NOT been updated in 2 decades...pastels, Laura Ashley, etc. If you can afford to, I recommend the Mauna Kea next door!

Great Beach

We love the Hapuna. Great beach. Friendly and attentive staff. We've been coming to the Hapuna for over 15 years. Still love it, but the rooms and the facility are getting a bit dated.

Hapuna Beach

The hotel was beautiful and over looks the beach. The staff at the hotel were as fabulous as the scenery on the Big Island. We went horseback riding in Waipo but would have preferred going to one of the ranches. The golf course was tricky but challenging. The only complaint I have about the hotel is that it is so big that it could take a few minutes to walk to the elevator banks so we requested to have our room changed. The hotel staff was very accomodating with letting us move our room.

There really was not alot to do at night on the resort so we went down the little town for dinner a few nights. Just be prepared to lay back and relax because the nightlife is almost non-existent.

Unbeatable location, great value

Located on one of the world's absolute best beaches, in one of the world's best microclimates, this large hotel has everything one needs for a memorable vacation. Guest rooms are quite large and bathrooms are spacious and high end. Quality beds and linens. Unobtrusive but friendly and helpful staff throughout. Signing privileges at the Mauna Kea, on the next fabulous beach up the coast, open up additional options for meals as well as the two excellent golf courses, though it was disappointing that the free shuttle between the two sister properties has been discontinued. Old TV's in the rooms, but you don't go there to watch TV, do you? Wonderful pool, kid friendly but adult oriented. Seems penny ante to charge extra for parking and internet access, but overall great value for this quality and location!

Resort Big Island Style

The staff was very friendly. The advantage to not being on Oahu or Maui was that the area was not crowded with families or wedding parties. Sometimes, you just want a quiet Hawaiian beach vacation... you know?

Quiet location on the beach

Don't worry when you have to turn off the highway away from ocean to get to this hotel. The road winds around and under the highway to a perfect location on the beach. Nice surrounding grounds were well maintained. There were plenty of beach chairs and umbrella's, but beware in the late afternoon the staff starts stacking the chairs for the night. Food is good but expensive for every meal. We got salads at the grocery store and enjoyed dinner on our deck with a gorgeous sunset. The surf was high during our week long stay so we were not able to snorkel. High waves were great for the surfers. The staff was very nice and helped us with a room change after my first night because I wanted a better view of the ocean. Beware some rooms have large palm trees obstructing the view. I was very pleased and felt very taken care of at the Prince. I would like to stay there again....because the staff was so helpful and accommodating to my needs. One area of improvement that would be nice is to replace the plantation style shutters with drapes to block out the light in the morning. I also would have like to see more flowers of different kinds on the grounds. I really wanted a nice photo of a bird of paradise. I didn't like having to pay for internet....I think it should be included in a resort hotel. My previous trip was at a 5 star resort so I gave this one a 4 star. It was very nice and a good value for the money I spent.

Hassle-free, last minute beach getaway

We wanted our return trip to Big Island to be about relaxing on the beach, and the Hapuna Beach Prince hotel did not disappoint. Hapuna Beach is one of the nicest on the island and our room was just a few feet from the sand. Rooms are spacious and staff friendly. Restaurants and bars on site are nice, though a bit expensive. Booked as part of a package and thought it was an excellent value.
