Beautiful Hotel on Great Beach

The Hapuna Prince was a beautiful hotel on a gorgeous beach. Next time we would splurge for a room closer to the ocean, but the pool and grounds were lovely and the staff was great.

Excellent as always

One thing that came to mind while there - if you get a garden view room on the ground floor - good possibility of seeing an occasional cockroach and flying insects in the room.

could be much better

Hotel/resort is in a great location - excellent beach, view, and weather. Staff seem a bit curt at times but that could be the local way of life compared to the obscenely smiley American customer service. For a hotel/resort catering mostly to non-locals, they lack a restauran/bar that is open past 8:30 PM. Near by restaurants (about 5 miles aways) close at 9 PM and 10:30 PM. I am also not sure if they have a proper place serving lunch at the hotel. The most annoying aspect of this hotel and probably all other hotels is that they prefer to charge for parking, breakfast, wireless on top of the already high daily room rents. I really do not see the point of it. Why not bundle up all of them into one and make the customer feel better when they are at the hotel?

average getaway

We enjoyed our stay. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Great views of the ocean. Staff checking in were rude and gave us a room as far away from the conference we were attending as we could be. Gave us terrible directions on how to get to our room at midnight. Other staff were much friendlier. The food was ok. Beaches were clean and fun. Snorkeling was fair but waves too rough most days so couldn't see as good. Years past it was excellent when water was calmer. Parking garage was ok but they charge $15 a day...should be free. Wireless internet also additional fee which seems absurd.

Love the Big Island and Hapuna Beach

This was our 4th stay in the last 8 years and it was wonderful. We even got the same room that we stayed in the first time. This is the best location on the best beach on the Big Island of Hawaii!

Weird place to holiday

This resort and it's neighbour, Mauna Kea resort, both owned by the same Japanese company, are striking cavernous but charmless concrete edifices resembling hospital buildings or (inside) airports, with endless empty corridors scattered with pointless chairs and lined with numbered cell doors. The rooms are cramped (for a married couple, 2 double beds and nowhere to sit) and uncomfortable, have noisy air conditioning and contain few facilities apart from a coffee maker and a small poorly functioning fridge. The gym is well equipped but the beach can be dangerous with dumping waves and rips when it gets windy, although the setting is impressive and sea is a perfect temperature. The place is also overrun by stray cats! Ask the officious desk staff anything and they will inform you about another inventive fee they can charge for your stay. Valet parking, wifi and a utilities fee special package will cost you an extra $25/day whereas the compulsory utilities with wifi but without valet parking is the same price. There is a $4 "delivery" fee for extra crockery or cutlery for your room. The restaurants are horrifically expensive and mostly ordinary and there are few alternatives nearby. The Manta restaurant in Mauna Kea Resort was very good but entrees average almost $20 and mains $46.

I don't recommend staying here but if you do, try Pueo's Osteria Restaurant in nearby Waikoloa for exceptional Italian food and service.

Hapuna is nice and mellow

Most of the people were very nice and overall would stay again. They do tend to try and really overcharge you for a lot of things that they should not, such as a simple espresso. Dinner is quite expensive as well for what it is. But the food is decent, just pricey.

Very nice, very friendly, but lacking in a few places

Our room here was very nice, the staff very friendly, and accommodating with e.g. a room change request a couple of days after we arrived (we arrived when the hotel was basically fully booked because of "HawaiiCon" ), taking off towel charges when we forgot to return pool towels, heating up a pizza for us that we brought back with us one day, etc. The beach was great, the fitness center very good, and so on. I give it only 4 stars for several reasons. The food we had was not terrible; this isn't praise, clearly. However, the food wasn't bad either. It was just 'ehh,' and you are wanting more than that when you're paying resort prices for dining. Secondly, for a resort that is separate from the two nearby towns of any size (Kona-town or Waimea) there isn't much to do if you're not playing golf and swimming every day. My wife and I are young -youngish, anyway- and I feel the resort would have been a better fit for families with children or somewhat older couples. We found ourselves driving elsewhere a lot. And thirdly, the hotel is showing its age in some ways. This is all in very cosmetic ways, but having e.g. buttons taped over in the elevator doesn't inspire confidence and certainly doesn't look good. Given how well kept the grounds and the hotel in general are, this was a bit surprising. All that said, we good a good deal on the room and we enjoyed our stay; overall it was definitely a positive experience.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

Head up to Kawaihae for pizza, fish-n-chips, and take-out sushi if you're looking for some cheap, good eats; the little strip mall with the Kohala Burger & Taco has several shops and restaurants in it, and there is a marina/scuba shop right there, too.
