The Aston Maui Lu is a budget-friendly hotel on Maui, which is more like a condo stay than a catered hotel, but you can make full use of the outdoor picnic areas and barbecue stations in the ever-present sunshine. Occupying multiple buildings across 28-acres of fragrant coconut grove and pristine lawn, it's the perfect backdrop for a recharge, with a private, postcard-worthy Hawaiian beach straight ahead. The resort sets you up for everything from whale-watching (November to April) from your private lanai, to a blissful float through the Maui-shaped swimming pool, or even lesson in basket-weaving. Find out what a night of Polynesian revelry is really like at the Aston Maui luaus, with a fiery finale of music and dance, three times a week.

Neighborhood
The hotel is located in Maalea Bay and the wider area of Kihei, in southwest Maui. Start the day local-style at Da Kitchen or try Kihei Cafe for a more all-American breakfast of omelets or cinnamon rolls. Book a dive charter or sunset sail at Maui Dive Shop, then finish the day at South Shore Tiki Lounge, a genuine tiki bar beloved by locals for its rum punches and dessert cocktails. The historic whaling town of Lahaina is just up the coast and tells its story at the whale museum, between plenty of independent art galleries and local shops.
Hints and tips
Guests looking for absolute peace, with only the sound of the tide, should ask for rooms in the 400 building, which has its own private cove.

There is no on-site restaurant, so pick up some snacks from Safeway or Foodland stores to the south and stock up the in-room mini-fridge.

Centrally located budget option

The hotel was OK for a budget option. Kihei is a nice location for those who are planning on traveling all over the island, with fairly easy access to everywhere from Ka'anapali to Haleakala. The rooms are dark, even with the curtains open during the day, and look due for a renovation. There also appear to be a number of unoccupied/unmaintained buildings on the property. The in-wall air conditioner was noisy when the compressor kicked in throughout the night. Wi-fi was only available at the front desk, but was free. There are a couple of "private" coves on the property which are nice for lounging when they're not occupied by locals fishing. Aston also gives a coupon book to guests which saved us at least $50 throughout the trip. Overall, I would recommend this hotel to budget-conscious travelers who aren't looking for all the amenities of a resort.

Not the cleanest

The original room they gave us had bugs crawling on the bed and floor, it was pretty hairy. Luckily, they were nice enough to upgrade us to an oceanside view with direct access to the beach, so the bugs issue was somewhat forgiven.

friendly people outdated accommodation

We were right on the ocean, so that was a plus. The beds were OK, too. The paint was peeling and obviously moisture damage around the bathroom and closet door. This place could use some updating, but quiet and friendly. With all the choices in Kihei, I would only recommend this if the price is great.

Not Very Updated

This hotel was quaint in appearance, but needed some updating and cosmetic repairs. The rooms were updated and it appeared they were working on rooms and the one we were in had not yet been done. But since we only used the room for night time we were able to deal with it, but having it appear a bit cleaner and fresher inside would have been nice. If you aren't into having anything fancy, but just a place to sleep, this is a good value.

Maui getaway

The hotel was much older (I would say 20-30 years) and more run than the pictures on their website. The bathroom floor had a lot of water damage and the tile was dis colored and warped, giving the room an unclean feeling. The staff however were friendly and helpful, and the room had a beautiful view of the ocean and the beach across the street was very nice.

There were many places to eat within walking distance and the trip was enjoyable. If you want a cheap place to stay the Aston Maui Lu is not a horrible place to stay.

Hmmmmmmm

The Seafire is an EXCELLENT choice for snorkeling! Great crew and really show they care about your experience. Did a helicopter tour and used AlexAir, again so friendly and truly shared the Maui hospitality. The Hotel is in need of renovations. It was clean, luckily we were only there to shower and sleep.

O.K. Just for Sleeping

Hotel was in very poor shape. The staff was wonderful. Very helpful. The hotel nickel and dime you to death for every little thing. I will spend a little more next time so I can at least have coffee in my room in the morning. But you know the old saying. It was better there than in Kentucky that week.

Don't believe the picture!

This place is stuck in the 70's and parts of our room hadn't been renovated since then. The lining of the drooping drapes had gapping holes that let in sunshine, the window A/C hummed and coughed all night, shutters & baseboards hadn't been cleaned in a long time. Hotel sits next to an abandoned, gutted building on same property. No restaurants nearby (but short drive) , no microwave or hair dryer.
