Breathtaking views, good service, although not sure if it was worth the price
During our Kauai vacation my wife and I spent 3 nights at a resort in Poipu, and then 2 nights at the St. Regis. The views from the hotel are hard to match anywhere, overlooking Hanalei Bay, surrounded by lush mountains. The staff was extremely professional and pleasant and our stay was good overall. However, not sure how great of a value it was considering the cost. Breakfast and other resort dining was all pricey. Also, at least the week we were there, the resort and especially the pool area seemed crowded, which is great for business, of course, but not ideal if you seek peace, quiet, and relaxation during your vacation. Lastly, we arrived right at check-in time, 3pm, but had to wait until 4.30 until our room was ready for us.

A Fabulous Experience
We have stayed in many really nice hotels in many locations including other Hawaiian Islands, but The St. Regis Princeville is by far the best experience we have ever had. The hospitality and service at this hotel is unbelieveable, from the valet staff to the waiters and waitresses, the maids the groundskeepers, everyone made you feel like a valued customer and would go the extra mile to satisfy any request you had. We will return to this hotel in the future.

A beautiful location poorly executed
The St Gegis Pricneville locaiton on the north side of hahalei bay is unbeleivable gorgeous, unfortunately the service and staff attitudes was unbeleivably mediocre. Having arrived rom the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua, we were expecting that same exquisit level of service but unfortunately from the valet staff that had to be told the little things like clean the trash out and add ice to the cooler each day to the butler staff that sometimes took hours to deliver ice to the room this property is beautifully situatied but poorly executed. but at the end of the day, it used to be a shearaton and that is really how it still comes off, just at triple the price.

Overall fantastic trip. Hotel worth every penny. Stellar service & location. Only things worth criticizing include high prices for food / drinks, as well as allowance of other hotel guests to use pool / beach area.

You too can live IN a movie.
So prior to our honeymoon stay at the St. Regis Princeville, I read on this site and others from some folks who complained about the service being snobby, too much tipping, and too many kids. It being our honeymoon and all, these things concerned me as I wanted this trip to be as close to perfect as possible.I found the service to be amazing, and very friendly, not snobby at all. And in return for this great service, there is a fair amount of cash passing from hand to hand, but my feeling is that it is what it is, and you're paying for the whole experience, which is amazing. You will never have a view while eating breakfast, having a cocktail, eating dinner, swimming in the pool, smoking a cigarette, taking a shower, or any other activity like you will have during your stay at this hotel. If you ever watched Jurassic Park or South Pacific, and thought to yourself, "I want to go there," then this is your chance. Hanalei Bay is stunningly beautiful, and the views from every part of the hotel take full advantage. Really, can't strees this enough. Most beautiful hotel location I've ever seen.AS a self proclaimed foodie, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the Jean Georges restaurant Kauai Grill in the hotel is amazing. I had short ribs and mashed potatoes, and my mouth is watering as I write this. They were perfect. The mashed potatoes were a magical creation with the texture of premium ice cream, only hot and buttery. The short ribs were sipmly the best short ribs I've ever had. Even if you don't stay here, make a reservation. It's too good to miss. As a comparison, the last fine dining meal I had previous to the Kauai Grill was only three days early at Hubert Keller's restaurant Fleur de Lys in San Francisco. Although Fleur was very good, it was not in the same league as the meal I had at Kauai Grill. Checkers vs. Chess. The only bad thing for me to say about the hotel is there were a lot of kids. For the most part they were well-behaved, and the pool is big enough to get away from them, but the bar at sunset was not when I wanted to hear crying and whining of a kid who is upset that the nanny isn't paying attention to them. For me, the stay here was a splurge for our honeymoon, and not something I would normally be able to budget for, and it was worth every penny I had to stretch to make it work.We are already talking about coming back for a far out anniversary.[...]

Hike the Na Pali coast. Don't let any guidebooks scare you. It's doable for most people, at least the first two miles, and is amazing.

Good not great.Stay at the Grand Hyatt
This was a good hotel, but not great. We had a great time, but when we moved to the Grand Hyatt in Poipu for the next half of our trip, we were blown away. The enormous pool, 3 jacuzzi's, gym, service and food blew the St. Regis away. The Grand Hyatt and the staff have the it factor. It is not that The St. Regis was bad, but the Grand Hyatt was just so much better for us. I would suggest 2 nights in princeville and the rest of your trip in Poipu.
