Incredible Hotel in a Fantastic Location
Theresa Nov 24, 2009
We spent two fantastic nights in a Deluxe Ocean View Room and our experience at the hotel was incredible! The only thing ... that could have made it better would have been a king bed instead of two queens but I am definitely not complaining. The rooms were amazingly appointed with top of the line furnishings and wonderful attention to detail. The location was great for a quiet getaway although it was a just short drive to the busier areas. We loved being able to leave our door open on the balcony and listen to the waves at night and to be able to sit out on the balcony and take in the amazing view of the water and neighboring island in the distance during the day. I just wish we could have stayed longer! We will definitely try to stay there again if we come back.
Traveler type: Couples
I would highly recommend driving north just a little bit and seeking out some of the more secluded beaches. The waves were incredible and it was really exciting to watch all of the surfers. One of the beaches was accessible by a staircase from the cliffs next to the road that led through a grove of trees onto the beach. This could be a very romantic spot to spend some time.

Hard not to feel fabulous at the Ritz
Bluestarbutterfly Nov 17, 2009
We have to admit that we were a bit nervous about what to expect given the news of how slow the economy has been in Maui and ... the deep price cuts that the Ritz was offering, but have no fear this is still the Ritz. The staff is great (in fact sometimes there are more workers than guests), the food is wonderful and most of the resturants have dinner and/or wine specials, they are not advertised so ask before you pick a place. The rooms are clean and large. We had a wonderful time and loved that D.T. Flemings beach was on site, this beach has waves and allows for some surfing and boogie boarding. Grocery store, Maui Tacos and Boss Frog Rentals all very near by in Napili shopping center. My only very small negative is that the pools and spas are open 24 hours, but they don't have towels available 24 hours, so plan ahead if you're doing any late night hot tubbing or early morning dips. Over all a really lovely place.

There are many resturants on site and a short walk down the main drive, and they all have dinner specials at least one night during the week, ask if your looking to have a great meal and save a few bucks.

Fabulous Anniversary Vacation
Tishy Oct 28, 2009
This is a beautiful resort. We would not recommend this location for a first time trip to Hawaii.Kapalua is quiet and far ... from the night life or action of Lahaina. We had several wonderful meals at Sansei. They have an early bird special that is a great value. We stayed in a residential garden suite, it was great. We had a view of the ocean and it was very quiet. There is a market about a mile from the hotel where we stocked up on breakfast and lunch foods. It saved us money and time. The staff was very attentive and helpful. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Wet and rainy but still great
jared Oct 26, 2009
Kapalua is a beautiful area but can get more rain than most parts of the island depending on the trade winds. For the most ... part it's not a big deal because you can just head off to another part of the island to get some sunshine. Usually you only need to travel 5-10 minutes and you'll be in clear skies. The Ritz was very nice, things are expensive there but that is to be expected. [...]There is a lot of really good dining in the area for about the same price as the resort so I would recommend leaving the hotel for dinner, some suggestions:Kapalua:Merrimans (beautiful ocean views)Lahaina:I'O (awesome food right on the beach)Pacific'O (right next to I'O, very fresh fish)Did a couples massage at the spa and had a great time! Spent a couple of hours just lounging in the spa area which was very relaxing. All in all great hotel, beautiful location, a little less rain would have been great but not that big of a deal.

If you're up for the drive head to Paia which is at the end of the Hana highway and only about 10 minutes from the airport. It's a cool little town with lots of windsurfing in the area and two excellent places to eat: 1. Flatbread Company (all organic pizza that was delicious) 2. Momma's Fish House (freshest fish around, get there early because it get's very busy)

EnzoF Oct 15, 2009
We stayed here 10 years ago on our honeymoon, and just went back to celebrate our anniversary and it lived up to all our ... memories. The location is great, in that it's remote and quiet. The pool is fantastic. The only drawback is that the hotel is not on the beach, but that wasn't a priority for us. It does have beach access to DT Fleming Beach on site, and the shuttle van can take you to Kapalua Bay just around the corner. The rooms have been redone in the last 18 months, and have great bathrooms and are very comfortable. Some of the best sleep I've had in years. Wish I could go back more often. Very relaxing.

Gabby Oct 13, 2009
great spacious room with hardwood floor, beautiful pool, exclusive quiet beaches, beautiful view of the ocean, staff was very ... nice. Nice tennis courts free of charge. Great golf course, but I didn't use it. The only drawback, which is not necessarily a drawback if you are looking for a quiet vacation spot, is that this resort is kinda far from other public beaches or towns where a lot of activities or shoppings are going on. It's close enough to the old town of Lahaina (10 miles), and you can find a lot of restaurants and water activities there.
Traveler type: Couples
Pool menu is actually not expensive at all compared to restuarnats close by. You can simply hang out at the pool and order drinks or burgers/sashimi/nacho/wings with great price!

Slightly disappointing
Traveling Mom Oct 5, 2009
The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua was not quite up to my expectations of a luxury hotel. Rooms were attractively and comfortably ... furnished--nothing really dramatically special. BUT the pillows smelled musty and sour--I had to ask to have them replaced. Towels were fine, but not as fluffy and luxurious as I might have expected at a Ritz. Staff, especially the concierge staff, was unfailingly polite, cheerful and helpful. Food was fine, mostly (the chicken added to a salad one night was so dry as to be inedible), but everything is WILDLY expensive. Any mixed drink was a minimum of $12. Cold breakfast buffet (while nice) was $20; hot buffet was $28. Sandwiches were crazy expensive. Admittedly, it's the Ritz and Maui, a pricey combination. The pool was lovely, but unless you paid $100 a day for a cabana-ette (the "real" cabanas were $255 a day!), there was virtually no shade. A few umbrellas for the fair skinned and cancer-averse might be nice! All of this, plus the somewhat remote location on West Maui, might incline me to explore hotels in Ka'anapali on my next trip. If you're a runner, keep in mind this is very hilly territory! The Internet access is not wireless, and the wired location is hard to find (hidden in the side of the TV armoire) and awkward to use--small shelf that barely fit my Netbook, and no real chair/desk set up. Daily resort fee of $16 is annoying, and should just be merged into the room rate. Shopping boutiques are again very expensive.

Putting The Pineapple Into Practice
The Brattons Oct 4, 2009
Great Honeymoon spot!!! All staff were very friendly and genuinely welcoming. Kapalua is an area about 15 minutes north of ... Lahaina and is more private that any other hotel location that I saw. It was set a short walk from the beach and below the striking Maui mountains. The Kapalua Adventure center offers an awesome zip lining tour that was the highlight of our trip (do the Upper Mtn Loop). Th Ritz was surrounded by wonderful landscaping and the area had a steady (sometimes strong) but nice wind. For us the wind was perfect and made it feel cool the entire trip. If you are a sun worshiper and all you want to do is lay by the pool/beach then this might not be the hotel for you. We laid by the pool every day and plenty of sun for us. I toured the Grand Wailea resort to see what it was like since if was my second choice and I chose well with the Ritz. Finally, I have to say the the Club Level access was the best decision we made. Getting a Club level room gives you full access to food and drink at no additional cost. We took advantage of it and had every breakfast, most lunches and several other visits for to go drinks and snacks to take to the pool. Considering a coke at the pool is like $6 this was nice. The service at the Club was also amazing. Our concierge, Leslie, knew us by name the entire time and went above and beyond for everything. I recommend dealing with a concierge prior to your visit to book the luau of your choice and any tours or restaurants that you don't want to miss. Thanks Ritz!!

Great for a Marriott
Love the Beach Oct 3, 2009
The Ritz Maui is a beautiful Resort, They have recently completed a expansive remodel and the rooms were great. The service ... was great, especially pool side and the Valet / Bellman / Concierge. It had a very different feel than the last time we were at the resort, before Ritz Carlton sold to Marriott. Feels a little like they are more concerned with getting their money back from their remodel and less like the service my wife and I have come to expect from 9 years of vacationing based on the location of Ritz Carlton properties. Overall, the best beach of anyplace we have stayed. Easygoing and not uptight staff, Spa experience not so great as they would not let my Wife see the facilities before she booked a $200 spa service. The old Ritz would not have ever refused a tour. [...]

BIGGEST ADVICE for anyone who's NOT RICH: pack a lunch! Or find some good places to eat off the property. You get a great hotel for the price, but with it comes the expectation that it's ok to pay a day's salary for a meal. We mistakenly relied on the hotel food the first day we got there, and after paying that bill for a burger and fries, and a little sushi, we swore never to do that again. NEXT, RENT A CAR. You'll need it to get to cheaper (more reasonable) offsite restaurants and events. There's a Melting Pot restaurant and an Outback Steakhouse not too far from the hotel area. You'll pass it on your way to the hotel. In my opinion, if you're spending that much for a meal, go to The Melting Pot, it's much more worth it. If you're rich, no worries. The food's pretty good, and you'll never have to leave the resort. It's gorgeous, and there are several places to eat without ever getting into a car. If you're just spoiling yourself for a once-in-a-lifetime event but don't really want to spend $500-800/day, plan on getting out a little. This resort is north of the main string of resorts, so you'll definitely be driving anywhere you go to shop or see the sights. The resort doesn't even offer a Luau. My advice, if money's an issue, spend it on fun things to do and go for a cheaper hotel so you've got more money for the things to do. Most events are over a hundred/ea for ANYTHING including horseback riding, snorkling, surfing, zipline, etc. What goes with cheaper hotels (I said cheaper, not CHEAP)? Cheaper, good food. Think about it and best of luck! The much acclaimed "Gazebo" restaurant (look it up, people wait an hour in line for breakfast - we did, too) is not far from this hotel and in a very blue collar resort area that's on the same waterfront. Try some cool cheaper things like surfer-watching on the popular Front Street, or a day trip on the Road to Hana, and Happy Travels!
