Wonderful place

Beautiful place, typical of the Ritz. The rooms were modest size but beautiful. Looks like the bathroom could use a few touch ups. Lux pillows, sheets and towels- could have used a few more towels and I thought they would understand I need an extra bedsheet after the first night. Outstanding pools- wonderful views. Not used much during the weekdays (like DT Flemming beach) but on the weekends lots of kids (during spring break anyway). Sort of remote- not near the main town/airport and about 20 minutes from Lahaina, but very restful and relaxing. Make sure you try the brunch- it is wonderful. Also nearby on Kapalua "campus" is very good sushi- Sansei. Overall a winner and all you would expect from the Ritz (and even with [...]pricing, at Ritz prices) ...

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

Make sure you grab a cup of joe at the Maui Coffee store near the smokestack in Lahina- super coffee and convenient to going back and forth from resort. Also be sure to hit Sansei sushi and enjoy the pool. We didn't golf but the course looks lovely. And you can't leave without going down to the beach at sunset (or sunrise)...

Hawaiian getaway summer 2011 at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua

We had a wonderful time at the resort. The hotel staff and the staff at the restaurants in the hotel were great and made us feel very welcome! Only two issues with the hotel - first, better reading material -- I wish the hotel offered better reading material, especially newspapers. All we were offered was a local newspaper and the Wall Street Journal (not the most reputable paper anymore). The bookstore did not contain a wide selction of magazines or books. Also, more nighttime activiities -_ I wish the resort lounges were open later into the night and that there were more nighttime activities.

Excellent resort, disappointing food

The poor economy meant that only three of the five restaurants were open (only two at dinner time). I ate dinner at the hotel twice, and both times I had to send the entree back. The first, a $65 Kobe Rib Eye at their high end "Banyan Tree", was overcooked and then sat around before they brought it out, so it was luke warm with wilted greens on top. The next time I ate dinner was at the bar, the "Alaloa Lounge." I ordered Ahi and was surprised when she asked how I would like it cooked, but said med-med/well - it came out rare (only seared top and bottom, raw inside)! These are basic things that definitely shouldn't happen at a Ritz-Carlton. I stayed at the Kapalua in the mid 90's a few times and had some excellent meals at the Ritz. But now that they have remodeled it has lost the luster that one would expect (and what I remember) from the Ritz, Kapalua. On the upside my Residence suite was very comfortable, clean and quiet. The property is extremely beautiful with a lot of nature and a lack of the mega-resort feel that has plagued most beach properties in Hawaii. The golf courses are excellent! The food at the Honolua Store was better than the Ritz at a fraction of the cost. The two golf course restaurants were excellent. Ultimately I had a very peaceful and relaxing vacation, but the Ritz has definitely lost what it once was (even after the $180 million remodel). Save $$$, stay at a Kapalua Villa to take advantage of a beautiful 23,000 acre property. Oh yeah, my card/key consistently took about 10 tries to unlock my room.

The Ritz

The hotel was lovely but we had a difficult time checking in. Our room was allegedly not ready, then there were a number of other stories, wrong rooms, etc. From the time we arrived (noon) until we got into our room, six hours passed. We got a number of stories that did not make sense. [...] Other than that issue, the hotel was lovely and the people were very nice.

First time in Hawaii, Great stay.

Overall our stay was fantastic. Good: Location was awesome, friendly staff, I was not solicited for any timeshare or any sales pitch, clean hotel and pool and beach, THE BEACH WAS AWESOME, security is awesome I felt safe there. Bad: Our room had a nice garden view but they could have given us a better room with ocean view for the price we paid, the hotel was not full capacity, I sent them an email requesting an ocean view room but they wanted me to request again in person, when I arrived there I was tired and didn't feel like begging for a better rooom, I don't like asking for things twice when the I'm paying a lot I expect to have things first class. Valet was $18 so I opted not to get that service, they asked us to parked on the third lot because lots 1 and 2 were for valet but the valet lots were NEVER full (never even 50% full) they could make it more convenient for guests to let them park in the closer lot, maid service was kinda hit and miss, one day we got enough toiletries for 4 people and other times not, same with towels. No free computer service $5 minimum for computer use. WOULD PROBABLY COME BACK but it was really pricey so If my kids are bigger the next time we come I'll probably pick a different hotel. LOCATION WAS AWESOME!!! very private and secure.

Make sure you go to Front Street they have the shopping area and recreational deals and restaurants. Also, buy your souvenirs at Longs Drugs a lot cheaper. The souvenir shops charge a lot. Also for your car rental dont make the same mistake I made I got conned into buying gas from Alamo, I was tired and new to Hawaii and the guy at the counter told me that gas is a lot cheaper at Alamo instead of buying it in town. WRONG... IT'S A SCAM...they want u to buy gas from them at $1.60 more per gallon. I returned the car with half a tank of gas still in it (no refund given).

Very nice

Overall, this is an extremely well-run hotel. The rooms were kept impeccably clean, the food was good, and the service was friendly. Some complaints: - The hotel is very far from most of the action on the island, for better or worse. - The restaurants and services within the hotel were unusually expensive, even when compared with comparable places nearby. - A surprising amount of hidden fees (taxes, parking fees, etc) which came out to roughly $60 a day.

Nice clean room with lovely grounds. Service good (but not Four Seasons - Manele Bay good) with expensive food. Nice beaches and golf (concentrate on the golf not the whales!). A bit further to see rest of island.
