Oceanfront family-friendly condominium resort on Kapaa Beach
Pono Kai Resort sits oceanfront on Kapaa Beach, at the north end of Waipouli Beach. Spread across a dozen acres, 10 buildings house 241 one- and two-bedroom condominiums. A great choice for families, Pono Kai Resort has activities galore -- tennis, shuffleboard, croquet, a putting green and, of course, a swimming pool. Classes such as lei making (fee applies) are scheduled for guests and the coast-hugging paved Kauai Multiuse Path is right out front, perfect for an afternoon bike ride or sunset stroll.
Highlights
  • Resort activities
  • Weekly island orientation
  • Coastal path out front
  • Guests can pick herbs from the resort garden to flavor their island cooking
  • Staff will assist with dinner/tour reservations and tee times
Location
The Coconut Coast is the most populated area of Kauai and the main road sees its share of traffic. Fortunately for guests at Pono Kai Resort, the 2.5-mile Kauai Multiuse Path is out front so cycling is an option, and guests can walk into historic Kapaa. The Coconut Coast is centrally located, giving guests at Pono Kai Resort easy access for day trips north to Princeville, Hanalei Town and the Na Pali Coast or south to Poipu Beach.
Rooms
One-bedroom/one-bath condominiums have either garden or ocean views or are located oceanfront. Two-bedroom/two-bath units are ocean view or oceanfront. The condominiums range from 740 to 1,132 square feet and include fully equipped kitchens and lanais. Some have a sofa bed for extra sleeping space.
Features
Pono Kai Resort was built on the site of a former pineapple cannery that operated on Kauai from 1913 until 1960. Historical photos of the area hang in the lobby where the front desk is staffed 24/7. The majority of the Pono Kai Resort condominiums have either one or two bedrooms, and most are timeshares. A number of them are rented through Condominium Rentals Hawaii (CRH). The beach directly in front of the resort is excellent for walking but not for swimming, though family-friendly Lydgate Beach Park is just a short drive south.

Great if you won't be in your room much...

Very outdated and battled ants all the way on the second floor. Also the condo we rented had a private owner. The owner actually called to ask if she could get stuff out of the apartment. Thought this was very unprofessional and took us out of the "vacation" mindset. She bugged us about when we would be out. I don't feel it's our concern who is coming next. All we should have to worry about is our vacation. The best part of the condo was the location. Probably will not stay there again.

Review of Pono Kai Unit J101

This unit was dirty so outdated I have stayed at Pono Kai in the past and all was fine. This was a private owned unit and in this case The renters need to totally update the entire unit. There were no other units to change to in Pono Kai ***** Do not stay in unit J101 it was the worst Cono unit I have ever stayed in. The bed was old and worn and hard. You couldnt sleep on the 20 yr old sofa sleeper the shower curtain was full of mold and mildew. The TV in the living room is a old 13 inch TV that is totally to small no unit in the bedroom. Had to go purchase an air mattress to sleep on. There were roaches that came out at night. We paid a cleaning fee up front in the price but the unit was not fit for anyone to stay in.I will never trust [...]or the rental co they use again because of this.

You call this a upgrade

I was supposedly upgraded from marc pono to kaha lani since this one closed, (found out it really didn't) the room we were in at kaha lani was terrible. The toaster, dvd player, sliding door, clock radio and the dishwasher were ALL broke, the room was smelly and everything was rusty and very old. The paint was chipping on all the windows. I felt like I was in a cheap hotel in the Ghetto. The carpet was all wet you could see into our room and living area from outside even if the drapes were closed. You could hear everything from all the other rooms. The front of the dishwasher was all rusted and warped and the last straw was the whole front of it fell off when I shut the door. I was so upset with this place for all the money I had spent I felt like we were put into the worst room they could find for us. By the 4th day and after the dishwasher incident I finally went to the manager and she did upgrade us to a room right next door that was the total opposite. I was truly happy she did this but really we or anyone for that matter should never be in the 1st room, it should be condemned. I am so very disappointed with the accommodations that were chose for us by cheaptickets without 1st checking it out for themselves. I am also disappointed with the kaha lani for even putting us in that room to begin with. I feel as if part of my trip should be refunded, hell I could have booked a better and cheaper room at the Kauai sands or something but that is NOT what we paid for period. I hope I get some kind of response from cheaptickets in regards to this.I will wait and see.

Upgraded to Kaha Lani hotel

My family was there for a baseball tournament. The size of the 2 bdrms were good and the 2 bathrooms were great. The hotel was just off the beach which made it convienent. The location of the hotel was off the main road which was great because you couldnt hear or see the traffic. The only things that were nto so good was the queen mattress was lopsided, the dvd player did not work, and the bathroom in the master bathroom couldve been cleaned better..

The Marc Pono Kai went bankrupt

After arriving in Honolulu we were supposed to use Go airlines to get to Kauai, that flight ended up being delayed nearly 4 hours, and when we did get a flight the electricity was off in the plane when it taxied thus no aair conditioning. When got to Alamo rent a car they tried adding everything but the kitchen sink to rise the price. Showed up to find we didn't have a condo as company went out of buisness. Had my oxygen there so I had to carry it to the car and transport it to a different condo resort, the Kaha Lani. At the new resort the TV didn't work, it took 2 days to get a working 19". Our condo was old and run down, no air conditioning, and no jacuzzi. The other condos looked ok. On the plus side every person we met was absolutely wonderful, both workers and people who were indiginous to Kauai.

Marc Pono Kai Kaua'i

This was our second stay at Pono Kai on Kaua'i. Our first say was great. The location is great as it is near most shopping and eating. The grounds are beautyful and well maintained. The pool is very nice too. I could never get the card key to open the gate so I could get into the pool area. I found out I was not alone. Three other people had a similar problem. The one thing that spoiled our stay this time was the housekeeping staff. We were at Pono Kai tem days. In ten days they gave us new clean sheets once. Evidently the staff goes home at 5:00 PM. If you need anything after 5:00 PM you are out of luck until tomorrow morning. We called the office three times to have housekeeping clean, give us new sheets and clean towels. Once we even went to the front desk and made the same request. All these requests fell on deaf ears. Some nights we had to use the same wet towels we use in the morning. Three times we had to go to the front desk to get our own towels. One time we ran our of toilet paper and I went to the front desk. You guessed it, it was after 5:00 PM. Evidently this resort has two seperate divisions: the resort side with 12 units and the timeshare side. Sadly we stayed on the resort side. The we go home at 5:00 PM so you are "up the creek." I spoke to the timeshare people and got nowhere. They would not even give me a roll of toilet paper. All they did was call the mamange of the resort side and sometime after 6:00 PM she arrived with towels and toilet paper. I have never beed so mad as I was during our stay. Two years ago my wife and I vacationed in Cancum, Mexico. Guess what? We had clean sheets and towels every night. Go figure. I sent an e-mail to marc respor vice president, but at this writing I have not heard back from him and I don't expect to hear back. I'd think long and hard before booking a vacation saty at this place. Maybe our stay was just a "fluke" but it sure was unplesant. Steve Balloch Santa Ana, CA

very family friendly

The Marc Pono Kai was a very beautiful place to stay. There was a lot to do such as tennis, golf, and even fishing on the grounds. The swimming pool was a decent size. What we really liked about the stay was the ability to cook our own meals, just like home. Everything was there for us to use and then some. The view was fabulous and the room size was perfect.
