Budget-friendly hotel overlooks Wailua Beach on the Royal Coconut Coast
Easy on the budget, Kauai Shores, an Aqua Hotel is garden-style lodging overlooking the ocean on the east shore of Kauai. There are not a lot of frills here, but basic vacation needs are nicely met in 173 comfortable rooms decked out in casual island-style decor with air conditioning. The 6-acre property has two pools and puts guests steps from user-friendly Wailua Beach, where activities include swimming, snorkeling, sunning, surfing and boogie boarding. The hotel does not have its own restaurant, but the many eateries of Coconut Marketplace are close by.
Highlights
  • Steps from Wailua Beach
  • Two swimming pools
  • Budget-friendly accommodations
  • Walking distance to Coconut Marketplace
  • Internet access (fee applies)
Location
A central east coast location makes Kauai Shores, an Aqua Hotel a fine base for easy exploring north to Hanalei Town, Princeville and the Na Pali Coast and south to Poipu Beach Resort. Even the rugged western shore, with spectacular Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park, is a doable day trip.
Rooms
All rooms at Kauai Shores, an Aqua Hotel can accommodate up to three adults or two adults and two children. Basic amenities include both air conditioning and ceiling fans, a small refrigerator, balcony and tub and shower. All rooms have wireless Internet access (fee applies). Kauai Sands Hotel does not have adjoining rooms or cribs available, but families with young children can request a rollaway bed (fee applies).
Features
Kauai Shores, an Aqua Hotel is a good choice for vacationers on a budget and those who plan to spend most of their time out and about in gorgeous Kauai rather than in a hotel room. The hotel is only a couple of miles from Wailua Golf Course, well under a mile from tranquil Wailua River and just a short walk to the 60-plus shops and restaurants at Coconut Marketplace. A small in-room refrigerator allows guests to have snacks, juice and breakfast items on hand, making it even easier to keep a vacation budget in check. And although many island accommodations, even the most luxurious, do not have air conditioning, Kauai Sands Hotel does.

Short Notice Stay

Hotel is not much to look at on the outside. Old, and dated but still has some character to it. The lobby was super old and dated, however, the rooms were updated and renovated. Beds were comfortable and inviting. Could use a little flair for amenities though, no hot tub, which was a downer. Staff was VERY friendly though.

Adequate, good location

This hotel, though not glamorous by any means was well located, and the rooms were clean. Unexpected parking charge not listed in ad or reservation of $9 a day…

Perfect location

We stayed at this hotel which is located in Kapaa. Perfect location, in the middle of everything. The hotel is oceanfront and is not crowded at all which makes it even better. Classic old hotel which is nice for the laid back lifestyle.

Missed our flight, needed the cheapest room

This hotel is down right terrible. Im in the room right now and my wife and I were lucky enough to be put in the room right next to the tractors, saws and loud construction workers that started at 8am. When I brought this up to the front desk they said that they were sorry but thats what time the construction crew starts. When I asked to move to a room far away from the construction, they wanted to charge me the extra for the room and a fee for moving rooms!! I needed the cheapest room, so my expectations were already very low, but they somehow still did not meet them. The other reviews are right, 1970's feel to the entire place. The only upgrades they have done since then are the flat screen TV's that only have about 50% working channels. Beds were very uncomfortable, carpet is blueish green shag, chairs have rips in them, headboard is screwed to the wall, but the screws came out and the headboard is now falling off the wall... Just terrible. Location gets a good rating because it is right on the beach.

Safeway shopping center is about a mile away, so you can save money by doing groceries, but in this hotel there is only a small fridge and nothing else.

A place to sleep and shower

I picked this hotel because it was the cheapest place to stay on Kauai. It is on the beach, and about halfway between the north and south shore areas. The entire place needs to be updated. The wallpaper is falling off in the hallways. The glasses they left us for drinking were 1970's brown tinted. There was mold in the bathroom. The "continental breakfast" was a joke: coffee, donuts, croissants, bananas, supposedly from 7-10, but they were wiped out by 9 and didn't refill their meager offerings. You get what you pay for. It worked for us as a place to sleep and shower, but even as the cheapest place to stay, it was overpriced.

Dated but.....

rooms were very dated, pealing wallpaper and ancient carpet, but surprisingly clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. Who goes to Kauai and does anything in their hotel room except sleep?

ok

From the outside it look neat, older but not bad. The room smelled. fridge did not work. The shower had hair and leftover soap still in it, but it was the best water pressure we'd had on the island. The beds were not comfortable. The beach access was awesome!

Cheap Motel Living

The negitive, paying $8 for parking at a motel not disclosed when we reserved the room. We arrived at 7pm and they were roups of men longing around ht e exterior drinking and smoking, not a great first impression. The refrigator froze all of the food we put in. The 'breakfast'was bananas, donuts, pog and coffee. The servive to get breakfast was slow Small unappealing pool. THE POSITIVE- great location on the beach in Hawii

OK for a Budget Hotel

A little hard to find - Charged an extra $8 a night for parking in a low density area - an extra charge scam that wasn't disclosed up front when booking. Overall not a bad value - right on the beach, pool nice and lobby with wifi and breakfast OK. Place is a bit run down but kept up pretty well and room was clean. Overall I'd recommend for the budget traveler as a decent low cost option. Nicer hotels around for a bit more. I guess I need to write more - good sushi bar nearby and Mema Thai restaurant .
