Budget-friendly hotel overlooks Wailua Beach on the Royal Coconut Coast
Easy on the budget, Kauai Shores, an Aqua Hotel is garden-style lodging overlooking the ocean on the east shore of Kauai. There are not a lot of frills here, but basic vacation needs are nicely met in 173 comfortable rooms decked out in casual island-style decor with air conditioning. The 6-acre property has two pools and puts guests steps from user-friendly Wailua Beach, where activities include swimming, snorkeling, sunning, surfing and boogie boarding. The hotel does not have its own restaurant, but the many eateries of Coconut Marketplace are close by.
Highlights
  • Steps from Wailua Beach
  • Two swimming pools
  • Budget-friendly accommodations
  • Walking distance to Coconut Marketplace
  • Internet access (fee applies)
Location
A central east coast location makes Kauai Shores, an Aqua Hotel a fine base for easy exploring north to Hanalei Town, Princeville and the Na Pali Coast and south to Poipu Beach Resort. Even the rugged western shore, with spectacular Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park, is a doable day trip.
Rooms
All rooms at Kauai Shores, an Aqua Hotel can accommodate up to three adults or two adults and two children. Basic amenities include both air conditioning and ceiling fans, a small refrigerator, balcony and tub and shower. All rooms have wireless Internet access (fee applies). Kauai Sands Hotel does not have adjoining rooms or cribs available, but families with young children can request a rollaway bed (fee applies).
Features
Kauai Shores, an Aqua Hotel is a good choice for vacationers on a budget and those who plan to spend most of their time out and about in gorgeous Kauai rather than in a hotel room. The hotel is only a couple of miles from Wailua Golf Course, well under a mile from tranquil Wailua River and just a short walk to the 60-plus shops and restaurants at Coconut Marketplace. A small in-room refrigerator allows guests to have snacks, juice and breakfast items on hand, making it even easier to keep a vacation budget in check. And although many island accommodations, even the most luxurious, do not have air conditioning, Kauai Sands Hotel does.

Short Notice Stay

Hotel is not much to look at on the outside. Old, and dated but still has some character to it. The lobby was super old and dated, however, the rooms were updated and renovated. Beds were comfortable and inviting. Could use a little flair for amenities though, no hot tub, which was a downer. Staff was VERY friendly though.

Renting bikes was koo and fun to get around in the near shoppong centers and to ride on the bike trail but eventually you will need to rent a car cause taxi rides are expensive unless you got money to burn.

low cost, great beach access

For the price, this hotel was more than adequate. After all, all you need a hotel room for, especially in Hawaii,is sleeping. The rooms were not fancy and outdated, as far as decore, but clean. The beach access was great. There was a perfect spot just yards from the hotel for the kids to practice snorkling in calm water. It was also next to Coconut Market place with shopping, food, and most importantly shaved ice. ;)

Faded Glory

The Kauai Sands is an older beach front resort that is within walking distance to shops, bars and resturants. Great value. The hotel has a faded glory look about it, the closed beach front reasturant you can sit in and enjoy the beach front view, 2 pools, a nice open air lobby, laundry facility for guests and security. The rooms are clean and comfortable and wifi available for a price. We paid $59.95 a night in 06/2011. We shopped around, read reviews and we were happy with our pick Kauai Sands.

You get what you pay for

The hotel has two pools one in a courtyard that no one seemed to use and one that is practically on the beach. The is no shade or umbrellas around the pool but it's a short walk to the hotel next door, which has a bar, bq, pool spa, lawn chairs an shade. The hotel is cheap for a reason. Nothing is updated, bedding is old, outlet plugs don't work unless switch is on, there is a swap cooler in the window, and cockroaches run when the lights get turned on. Cockroaches are all over the islands so it wasn't a surprise. Oh and the beds are really uncorfortable. Feels like you are sleeping on the floor. Don't get a room that backs the bar because they had live music everynight. This hotel is great for couples or small families on a budget. You dot sty in your hotel very much so it's not that bad. There is a fridge in the room but no coffee maker or microwave. You get what you pay for. We sated 5 days and it wasn't that bad. It's right on a beautiful beach with a pool!

Location close to beach

Hotel is aged, but rooms are clean. Housekeeping is excellent. Grounds and pools are in need of some tender loving care. Beach does have debris and rocks on shoreline, so not ideal for boarding or body surfing. If purchasing a package deal, be sure and ask for specific details of room location. When we arrived we were shown a piture of the location and given the option to upgrade.(Be sure to view room before you make decision) Room only provided a small refrig, but no coffee maker, microwave or clock. We found good food at Harley's Topical BBQ and Eggbert's Kauai's Family for a good breakfast. Fast service and reasonable prices. For fine dining try Kauai Coast Resort. Strongly suggest you add car rental to your package, so you can travel to other areas on island. Weather is nice, clouds come and go, rains briefly most days, but always warm! Have to add the package deal pirce was great, so for cost got what was expected. Just use to larger condo enviroment.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Coconut Market had nice gift shops, but quite a few were closed. Comfortable walking distance. Be sure to check out hours of operation. Take a shopping bag with you to eliminate bag fee.
