Budget-friendly hotel overlooks Wailua Beach on the Royal Coconut Coast
Easy on the budget, Kauai Sands Hotel is garden-style lodging overlooking the ocean on the east shore of Kauai. There are not a lot of frills here, but basic vacation needs are nicely met in 173 comfortable rooms decked out in casual island-style decor with air conditioning. The 6-acre property has two pools and puts guests steps from user-friendly Wailua Beach, where activities include swimming, snorkeling, sunning, surfing and boogie boarding. The hotel does not have its own restaurant, but the many eateries of Coconut Marketplace are close by.
Highlights
  • Steps from Wailua Beach
  • Two swimming pools
  • Budget-friendly accommodations
  • Walking distance to Coconut Marketplace
  • Internet access (fee applies)
Location
A central east coast location makes Kauai Sands Hotel a fine base for easy exploring north to Hanalei Town, Princeville and the Na Pali Coast and south to Poipu Beach Resort. Even the rugged western shore, with spectacular Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park, is a doable day trip.
Rooms
All rooms at Kauai Sands Hotel can accommodate up to three adults or two adults and two children. Basic amenities include both air conditioning and ceiling fans, a small refrigerator, balcony and tub and shower. All rooms have wireless Internet access (fee applies). Kauai Sands Hotel does not have adjoining rooms or cribs available, but families with young children can request a rollaway bed (fee applies).
Features
Kauai Sands Hotel is a good choice for vacationers on a budget and those who plan to spend most of their time out and about in gorgeous Kauai rather than in a hotel room. The hotel is only a couple of miles from Wailua Golf Course, well under a mile from tranquil Wailua River and just a short walk to the 60-plus shops and restaurants at Coconut Marketplace. A small in-room refrigerator allows guests to have snacks, juice and breakfast items on hand, making it even easier to keep a vacation budget in check. And although many island accommodations, even the most luxurious, do not have air conditioning, Kauai Sands Hotel does.

Super secluded!

You definitely get your money's worth at Kauai sands. Amazing location, right on the beach and very secluded. All we needed. The staff was amazing and went out of their way to make our stay the best! We will definitely be returning!

Needs some serious upgrades

We got this hotel in a package deal for a weekend getaway to Kauai. The rooms probably haven't been updated since the 70s. It was pretty clean. The best part about the hotel was the pool and beach proximity. We have a baby and I asked for a crib or play pen and they wanted to charge me $25/day. They need some major upgrades to compete with the nicer hotels around them.

need better prepareness under stress situations

well I do bealive staff need to be more prepare on evacuations, mentally prepare the guess at check in not at the moment of evacuation, this panic tourist plus it makes it even harder to get around in a place u hardly know to follow a map under the sirens of a sunami alert. plus wasn't reinburst for not staying the night in the room. Even thou they have complimentary coffee every morning there were no coffe mate in the room, no alarm clock.

serves the purpose well

It is wonderfully located, right next to a beach (though can't swim there I guess). Also a good market place and kayaking tour companies across the wall.. its clean, staff is friendly and efficient. For a cheap acco, its perfect.. one thing that could be better would be cheaper internet.

Cheap and old, but central and beach close location

After a week in princeville, we needed an airport close hotel for one night. This hotel was cheap, but man I'm glad we only spent one night there. The place is super old and the rooms are not a place that you want to stay in more than just to get some sleep. If you are on a budget and plan on spending most of your time outside room, then go for it.

Great Value for busy tourists

This hotel is in need of a makeover but it is clean, has a friendly staff, is in fairly good location with convenient shopping and places to eat very close by, and price is an excellent value especially for tourists like my wife and I who would rather spend our money on fun adventures on the island instead of a ritzy hotel.

Money-saving tip: Long walk from hotel

There is a small restaurant about a quarter mile north of the hotel that is popular with the locals due to it's good food and good prices. I don't remember the name of it but it's on the right side of the "Foodland Market. cash only and no atmosphere though.

Great price, excellent location.

The hotel wasn't as bad as the other reviews suggested. You get what you pay for, and I actually thought the place was okay. If you plan to be out for most of the day, you only need a place to sleep. The air conditioner was cool, but loud. The location was actually pretty nice, right in Kapaa. I would stay here again.

Depends on what you want

We read reviews and were prepared for a low-budget but clean hotel in a great location. All that was true - location is awesome - right on the beach and right next door to the Coconut Marketplace. However, when we checked in, our "mountain view" room actually overlooked the long narrow driveway/parking lane that led into the main lobby and beach area. Heat from the asphalt and fumes from cars were wafting in the windows. Given that we never use the wall air (makes us both sick and keeps us awake with the noise), we paid to upgrade to an ocean view room. Wish I had done it online to start because it would have cost a lot less... BUT, the room was infinitely better and had cool breezes and the sound of the waves - really nice. Sadly, the deck railings are old and built in such a way that most people sitting on the deck cannot see the water; the rails block the view unless you are standing up. The rooms were clean and the beds were surprisingly comfortable. However, no microwave or even a coffee pot- only a mini-fridge. Microwave and coffee are available only in the main lobby, where one could also pay to use the computer terminals (or you could pay for in-room WiFi). If someone put money into remodeling this hotel, it would be an amazing spot. It has a nice large open air lobby with comfortable seeing, and also a huge oceanfront room with a stage - great spot for a wedding reception if it weren't so dingy. I don't care about that stuff ; I like to save my money and enjoy activities off site. However, my friend was really bothered by the drab ambiance. Would I stay there again? Maybe. This price point and star level appeals to budget travelers who want to conserve on food costs by doing breakfast at the room and packing a lunch to go. So they really ought to have microwaves in the rooms. Had I thought about it, I might have bought a small microwave at the wal mart and left it behind when we checked out - I still probably would have come out ahead. To sum up, the price paid was equivalent to the value received. Plus items were great location, clean rooms, comfortable beds, nice staff. Minuses were lack of amenities, lukewarm shower water, and definitely some rooms where I would not want to stay due to location over busy driveway/parking lot. So just be sure about what you want before you book this spot. If you want to save pennies and be gone from the room except for sleeping or sitting on the beach outside your door, this is great. If you need nicer surroundings or more amenities, this is not the spot for you.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Farmer's Market next door at the Coconut Marketplace. Great fruit and even some veggies for much more reasonable prices. Been to the islands often but NEVER had better mangoes and bananas than what we found there!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There are restaurants just down the street inside a shopping plaza. If you wanna drive further down north for a couple minutes, there are more restaurants down the street.
