Low-key condo resort at the edge of Wailua Beach
Castle Lanikai Condominium Resort is an intimate retreat. There are just 18 units here, each within a 30-foot stroll of Wailua Beach. Extra spacious two-bedroom condominiums are housed in two low-rise, walk-up buildings on over an acre of lawn and gardens at the edge of the Pacific. A freshwater pool sits near the sand, and because Wailua is one of the swimmable beaches on Kauai, guests can dive into the ocean one hour and lounge around the sunny pool the next. Best on the island
We couldn't have asked for more. The condo we rented for six days at the Lanikai Resort provided the nicest accommodations we've ever had. The beautiful two bedroom, two bath unit was tastefully decorated with a fabulous second floor view of the pool and beach - best of all, we usually had the pool and beach to ourselves. Rather than being right on a busy road like many of the hotels, the Lanikai is set back with a green buffer between it and the road, so there was no traffic noise. We were able to park our rental car right outside our room, rather than needing to hike to the hotel from the parking lot or use valet service (or pay to park) as is necessary at some hotels on the island. No elevator didn't bother us as we are capable of carrying suitcases up a flight of stairs; however, if that's a problem, I'd recommend a ground floor unit. Each unit is different since they are owned and rented by the owners, but we couldn't have been happier with the location.

Shopping tip:
Short drive from hotel
Stop at the Safeway for your groceries and ask for a Safeway card as you check out. Our cashier offered one to us and then deducted $23 from the total. (Be sure to get a rental car. You will need a guidebook to find local attractions; Kauai does not do a good job of providing signs directing you to sights.)
