We stayed at turtle bay for our last part of our honeymoon (first part which we spent in Maui). Before we went to Oahu, ... everyone kept saying how commercialized the island was and how there was not that Hawaiian feel. Well, once we arrived at airport and drove to the north shore, you could clearly see the noncity feel. When getting to turtle bay it was confirmed. The staff was kind and down to earth. The rooms are fantastic with balconies overlooking the ocean. With a great location to get to all of the popular and secluded beaches. Also the nearby residential towns are great for catching breafast and lunch. The hotel has dinner places on site which are also worth it.

We played golf every second day and enjoyed the proximity of it. Liked the Palmer course the best. Really enjoyed the quiet ... and peacefulness of the resort. Sitting between the stormy waves and the pool was a delight with a book under my nose. I love Hawaii weather - it is warm but not muggy. Wind is just a bonus.

PROS:*Friendly hotel staff (except for the front desk folk)*Clean rooms*Rustic nature, great snorkeling (beach is not like ... Waikiki, it is less "manufactured")*Very quiet and peaceful*Wonderful views from the hotel rooms*Hotel price was very fairCONS*Resort fee (required) is $20/day [...].*Far away from just about everything. If you plan to cruise to other parts of the island for different beaches, Hanauma Bay, or for food be prepared to drive and sit in Oahu traffic.*Dining options are a rip-off. When you travel you expect food at the hotel to be pricey, but the quality of the food is sub-par. So you spend quite a bit of time driving to get other food.TURTLE BAY SURPRISED USWe rented a car from the airport and traveled to other parts of the island 4 of the 6 days we were there. The drive is beautiful, but can be a long drive with Oahu traffic. We hit up picture-perfect swimming beaches like Lanikai and Kailua with soft sandbars and drove to check out restaurants on the island. On our fourth day we decided to stick around at Turtle Bay Resort. Having previously thought the beach was a bit small and a bit "rough" with rough sand and lots of sea coral, we were pleasantly surprised to find the beach is really quite pleasant and very much alive with lots of sea life! We witnessed turtles swimming in the bay and lots of colorful fish while snorkeling. The water was crystal clear and the beach was really not "rough." Plus, with our hotel room nearby, we could be in the water and relax without worrying about our possessions on shore.Turtle Bay really makes the experience extra relaxing by providing towels, beach chairs, and snorkle equipment, body boards, etc... right at the beach and cost-free.This was a REAL vacation!

Lisa surf girl Dec 19, 2009
The hotel itself was very nice the views were amazing, but the pools and hot tubs were under construction. This is our first ... trip to Hawaii we stayed in the North Shore because of pipeline and the country feel. We wished the pool would have been opened and they maybe like notified us of the no pool and they comped up with free breakfast and yet still charged $20 a day for fees? I was dissapointed. Snorkeling and surfing there were great. We ate just at one resturant there The Bay club very expensive very alchoholic drinks - tropical splash the best! But pizza was great. We ate at alot of shrimp trucks and the best food was at cholos in haliewa and the rv right by the gas station in town! awesome ahi! the resturant Joes seafood grill was overpriced and everything was dry. Wamiea bay and falls was a wonderful place to visit. you can swim in the waterfall very deep though 45ft under the falls. Haliewa had great shopping and food. Foodland had water bread everything that we needed. Hotel staff were very friendly and great with info. We rented a jeep and drove a lot but it was a beautiful trip and we only were at the hotel at night.

Getaway from the Waikiki Crowds
Dave Dec 6, 2009
Our experience was very relaxing and enjoyable. The restaurants were a little pricey, but their quality was outstanding. We ... especially liked Ola and 21 degrees restaurants. The only thing that could have been better was our biking experience at the hotel. The bikes we picked out were in ill repair with broken parts. And they were the best of the best. The rear derailleur on mine provided access to only half the gears. The trails were more scenic than technical so full utilization of gears was not mission critical. The broken plastic guard I saw was probably broken because the rear derailleur needed to simply be adjusted. However, the sales folks I dealt with were more than happy to charge me the full rental value even though the problems were pointed out to them. If anyone wants to ride the trails and truly enjoy what the resort has to offer with a bike, I would recommend renting a mountain bike from "The Bike Shop" which is what we did. They have three locations and the closest to Turtle Bay is Kailua. Since we rented while we were there, we had to go to the Honolulu which wasn't that much further. Both location's staff were very knowledge and top notch.

The service was great and yes we will most definitely stay there again if we go back to Oahu. My husband and I liked staying ... at the North shore because we very much enjoyed the quietness. If you plan on going back and forth to Waikiki or Honolulu, would recommend you stay in those areas because the North shore is about an hour drive. Really, the only complaint we have is the carpet in our room was very dirty.

the hotel was wonderful, the resort was so quiet and peaceful. The sunsets were amazing. They acutally post that after 9pm ... is quiet time in the hotel which is what we wanted-the peacefulness of true Hawaii. The only thing i would change is they could use better mattresses at the hotel, they were alittle uncomfortable. The snorkeling spots down the road from the hotel were gorgeous. we saw turtles swimming while we were swimming in the ocean on the hotel property. It was amazing.

Refreshing and Relaxed
Blues Traveler Nov 15, 2009
The way the hotel is situated, almost every room has an ocean view, which includes a glimpse of Turtle Bay's immaculate ... grounds. We enjoyed the Saturday night seafood and prime rib buffet at Palm Terrace. Snorkeling is fun, but allotting more than one hour with the equipment would go a long way to enhance the experience. All staff encountered were friendly and professional. Overall (on a scale of 1 - 10), compared to other trips I'd give this trip a 8.5, which is pretty sweet!
Traveler type: Couples
The seafood and prime rib buffet at Palm Terrace is a good deal. However, I found the Kona Brewing Company Koko Marina Center at 7192 Kalaniana'ole Highway, Honolulu to be a great value dining alternative to Turtle Bay's offerings of Palm Terrace etc. The drive is a nice one, and dining on the patio overlooking the marina was great. Also, the food and beer pairings are excellent, and the prices are on par with most of your favorite family restaurants.

TURTLE BAY RESORT TRIP
tannymfg Nov 3, 2009
This resort is Heavenly with polite staff, extremely clean and well decorated rooms. We stayed in the beach cottages over ... looking the ocean 10 feet from our room. We were pleasantly surprised how tastefully our room was decorated. The bathroom is beautiful done in white bead board decor and marble counter tops and marble tile floors. The bath tub is at least a 200 gallon tub that is to die for!!! The ceilings of the cottage are cathedral which makes the room seem larger. Perfect size for a family too! We dined almost nightly on our private lanai and the staff set up the table elegantly with white linens and flowers. We received fresh fruit daily from housecleaning and fresh baked cookies and/or chocolates nightly with the turn down service. We loved the hammocks near the water a few steps from our lanai! Fantastic place to relax and watch the sunsets, listen to the ocean or nap. The Luau at the hotel on Friday nights is superb (A+). Worth the $$$!!!! Truly a paradise vacation at the Turtle Bay Resort! Miles of remote beaches on the hotel property. I would recommend this resort to everyone that wants a quality vacation. We are ready to go again!!

This was a spur of the moment thing for ourselves as a couple celebrating our 25th yr wedding anniversary. We already spent ... the previous days in Las Vegas. [...] We have heard about Turtle Bay before but it was more than i expected as far as location was concerned. The place is isolated and not as busy, its not too commercialized. we ve been to Maui before and theres lots of people. If we have to choose again i would go back to Turtle Bay and not for a few nights but at least a weeks stay. During our stay we went to eat at the hole in the wall eating places, the shrimp trucks, the fruit stands along the way. Its nice to blend in with the locals. These are options for dining. Get out of the hotel and explore! Its enjoyable. We did a lot and during our 3 nite stay.

Loving Life on the North Shore
Honeymooners Nov 1, 2009
Hawaii was an obvious front-runner as we considered places to honeymoon. We narrowed it down to O'ahu. Rather than being ... stacked on top of the crowds near Waikiki, we thought the laid back North Shore would be a more relaxing option. We couldn't have been more right about this and happy to have chosen Turtle Bay. Everything about our stay was 1st class (friendly staff, beautiful property, and great location). We rented a car for the week which gave us the opportunity to explore the entire island at our own pace (including a few hours on Waikiki which was more than enough). We spent a couple days lounging comfortably on the beaches at the resort and even managed some snorkeling without the crowds that are found at other locations (i.e. Hanauma Bay - also a must see but crowded). The surf town of Haleiwa is a short drive away and gives you some more reasonably priced dining options (is there a resort anywhere in the world where the food isn't overpriced?). That said, we loved the resort and everything about this part of the island. One of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations we have taken. We will stay there again!!
Traveler type: Couples
Before this trip, we were given a guidebook titled "Oahu Revealed" by Andrew Doughty. It was very useful in helping us to find a lot of lesser well-known sights and also providing some interesting history of the island. In general, the North Shore is a very laid back and slower paced part of the island (except high surf season Nov-Feb) while Waikiki is a nice beach with hotels stacked one on top of another at the heart of a major metropolis. Both would be nice places to stay...but very different scenes.

Jen Oct 19, 2009
This hotel has a great location if you want to be away from the busy down town area. It really felt like we were on a remote ... tropical island. However, the place really needs some repairs and be more organized .When we arrived we were informed that we were being up-graded to a 3 bedroom suite due to an over-booking accident on their end. Awesome suite but not a lot of privacy for 2 couples, plus we had to be out by the next day. The upgrade was not for the entire stay. Our rooms in the main hotel were in some serious need of repair. Tile in the bathroom was cracked, the carpet was coming up near the corners and the walls had several signs of water damage. Honestly I have stayed in Holiday Inn's that were nicer and hundreds of dollars cheaper. The staff was very friendly though which kinda made up for things and we had an overall good time.

Not as many options on the North Shore. Hotel favorite was Lei Lei's by the golf course! All are pretty pricey. Our favorite eatery was in Haleiwa--The Grass Skirt Grill! Super fresh fish & reasonable ($13/pp for a plate lunch or dinner). Haleiwa Joe's was excellent as well, less casual, & more $$, but worth it. Don't miss Matsumoto's, or Ted's Bakery (chocolate haupia pie & coconut moons).

The surf school located within the resort is a must try. The friendly and knowledgeable instructors provide an unforgetable expirience at a very reasonable price!

You have to do the horseback ride on property, wonderful scenery. Also if you are going to rent a car, rent a convertible. It was all the difference in enjoying our travels.
