Ideal Picturesque Base for Romantically Active Adventure
Located ideally along the lush Kona Coast, this hotel is a perfect starting and ending point to explore Paradise's picturesque coastline and volcanoes. Town, access to Hawaii's only highway, and other conveniences are close by. The Outrigger is adjacent to one of the best snorkeling areas on this vast island for an out-of-the-room-right-into-the-water experience. Tide pools, historic ruins, tennis courts, tropical gardens, and seaside eateries form the perimeter of this resort. Their included breakfast is deliciously prepared and diverse in a protected but open-to-the-air dining environment shared with tropical birds. Check-in and check-out are cordially facilitated by well-selected and well-trained knowledgeable staff, who can provide you with valuable and accurate "insider and local" tips on how to maximize your dream vacation. Although this hotel is not plush; and sound from fellow tourists sometimes travels across the wall separating rooms, we would return in a heartbeat for the place, the people, and their gorgeous sunsets!

Short drive from hotel
For tasty and plentiful down-home and local cuisine, The Big Island Grill right in close by Kona Town is outstanding. For those times when your palette craves more creativity and sophistication, Sam Choy's right up the hill (an easy walk) from the Outrigger is ideal for food, beverage, and sunset dining overlooking the Kona Coast. The charming hotel front desk clerk who knows and loves her island home provided these two excellent eateries.

not into luau's
The hotel is essentially like most other hotels in the world. The snorkeling right outside the hotel is great. The beach bar closes at 4pm and there is no hotel bar. I returned from dinner in town one night and there was a big luau with loud music and dancing on my side of the hotel on the lawn. That is fine if you like that sort of thing but is annoying if you just want to go to bed. The main reason I stayed here is that I could only stay 5 nights max at the Hapuna beach state park cabins and it was close to the airport.

good for beginning snorkelers
It is next to a great beach for beginning snorkelers and those interested in beach life. It is not so good for walkers without cars as the main road is very busy and it is hard to get to other areas where walking is better.

Location is beautiful, right on the water. The breakfast buffet every day was good quality and more than pastries, coffee, and fruit. Hotel employees were always friendly even if you needed your toilet plunged @10:30pm. Would def stay here again.

christmas in hawaii
We loved where it was located as far as snorkling with the turtles. We liked room size and the hotel size. We liked the breakfast buffet when it wasn't crowded but once the people poored in later in our vacation it was crazy and hard to find a seat or staff keep up with food. Wish there was a hot tub. Paid for parking but saw lots that didn't pay. Beds were very hard to sleep on since hard, have a soft cover ontop if don't want to spend money on new beds. Would love more rocking chairs in various places to sit in, they were great. A microwave would have been wonderful in the room as a option. And highly recommend on the other side of the door hanger that says do not disturb put clean room. That way the maidservice can get to room quicker knowing its available to clean. One dryer didn't work at all so please just take it out of there if not going to fix since it takes our money.

Loved it even though its not perfect
We loved so much about this hotel- the location, setting and overall layout of the hotel is gorgeous. The free breakfasts were great, the staff couldn't be nicer. Hawaiian music every evening added to the ambiance. The stores had great prices and lovely products. It is close to a great snorkeling beach. The weekly farmers market on the premises was fun, the access to beach, tidepools with turtles and fish and holy spots made for lovely walks. The views of sunsets were amazing. The area where there are beach chairs and lounges was lovely, There were however some unfortunate drawbacks for us- the mattress was too soft for us and the bathroom very small. There was mold and rust on the bathroom ceiling and the bathroom door is a sliding door which doesn't give sufficient privacy. I think that a designer could help them simply reconfigure the bathroom, sink, and closet area to create better space. it would also be nice to have a hot tub in the pool area. Paying $7 daily for overnight parking is something I am not accustomed to and I understand they plan to charge more shortly.

Great place for whole family
Although on the first day we arrived, the internet in our room can not work, the bath blacked, but the staffs are very nice to help us fix them in a short time. The breakfast there is fantastic, and the view is beautiful, not so far to all the activities.

2nd Visit in 4 Years
We had stayed here about 4 years ago and that experience was better than this time. The staff were much happier and pleasant on the 1st trip. Staff reductions have taken a toll on the atmosphere as well as the level of service. While resort folks were responsive, they were not as outgoing as 4 years ago. The included breakfasts are OK but again not like they were in the past. The pool was cold enough that my avid swimmer wife only swam once. The rooms were the same as before but we did miss a bathtub in ours. The cleaning staff and concierges were great! The front desk folks were so-so. The snorkeling at the adjacent beach was spectacular and the water warmer than the pool. The resort's beach side grill was shut down, which was a shame. There was some mention of it being put back into operation. The tide pool restaurant food was very good. I'd rate this resort a strong 3. It is a great place to just relax in the tropical breezes. We'd probably stay here if we visit the big island again.

If you like Thai curry, the Orchid Thai restaurant at the north end of town is great. You might wish to arrive at 5 PM when they open because the locals love it too! The hot curries are fabulous.
