Updated island-style hotel next to the beach and zoo

Queen Kapiolani is a value-priced hotel under new ownership. A total overhaul of rooms and common areas is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010. Enjoy killer views from east-facing rooms and a location ideal for exploration. Find the Honolulu Zoo across the street and the best stretch of sand on Waikiki Beach. Despite renovations, the hotel plans to keep the atmospheric paintings of Hawaiian royalty that have graced the lobby and celebrated the hotel's namesake since the early days.

Highlights
  • Views of zoo animals from private balconies
  • Experience eastern Waikiki's natural beauty, including bird watching in Kapiolani Park
  • Waikiki's best stretch of beach is less than a 2-minute stroll from the hotel
Location

The hotel boasts one of the best locations in Waikiki, across from the Honolulu Zoo and half a block from the beach, shopping and dining along Kalakaua Avenue. The Waikiki Aquarium is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. Find festivals and exciting weekend events at Kapiolani Park, located one block from the hotel.

Rooms

Choose from 19 floors of standard or deluxe rooms with a renovation completion date of December 2010. Book an east-facing room on a higher floor for Diamond Head, park and ocean views. Most rooms have balconies and all rooms feature air conditioning, free daily newspaper, high-speed Internet (fees apply), safe and refrigerator.

Dining

The modest-priced Garden Lanai restaurant currently serves breakfast, but will reopen for all meals upon renovation completion. Located next to the hotel, Teddy's Bigger Burgers is one of Honolulu's favorite burger-and-shake hangouts. The 50s-style diner serves custom-order creative burgers and a variety of shakes and malts.

Most dissappointing

I checked the website before I booked the package to see what the hotel was like. There certainly was no mention or pictures of the rooms that we got. The rooms were so small that you could sit on the end of the twin bed and rest your feet on the window sill. We were not able to walk around the room because our 2 medium sized suite cases blocked only open spaces in the room we basically had to crawl over the bed. The entry doors to room and to the adjacent room allowed us to hear every word of our neighbor having a normal conversation as well as the ice machine fan across the hall. I couldn’t look out of our windows because it was so close to the balcony of another room that I startled a poor woman standing on her balcony. By close I mean I could see her pupils dilate when she noticed I was standing at my window. No balcony for me of course. During our stay they couldn’t keep all of the three elevators working. I typically don’t take the time to write reviews but I felt I needed to this time.

Gross

The location is fantastic, the rooms are gross for the price. I paid $10 extra upgrade and it was a waste. I will not go there again.

Bummed about Room

when we checked in after I had paid extra for queen size bed we were given a closet size room with 2 twin beds. I went down and asked to be changed into the room I had reserved which they did, but the new room had a leaking toilet and a full size bed. We decided to go ahead and stay in that room our mistake. The air conditioner was SO loud and the small bed did not work. Next morning we asked to be moved again and we finally got a room that was worth while staying in.

Hawaiian Family Wedding Trip

Our room was small and extremely noisy. On the backside over the back entrance andf heard trucks unloading etc at extremely early hours. Lack of vending and Ice machines on floor. Room had a musty odor and carpet by doorway was damp. Was to be dried out but never happened. No complimentary breakfast ticket for a 5-day stay. Food at buffet was excellent.

Walk to Waikki beach was very short and close to ABC store to pick up needed items. Many short order places to eat.

Don't book a standerd room

You'll end up with a closet. The room I was given, 821, was basically the size of a closet. There was no room to walk around. You get a double bed and a desk that are about 8 inches from each other. The shower is smaller than a phone booth, if you remember how skinny those were. I went down to see about getting something a little bigger and was told I could upgrade for $10 a day + taxes more buy Sun Hwa. I started to walk away fuming, but realized that nothing would change and I'd still be stuck in that room. I went back to the front desk and spoke to Theresa Trimmer. She was more compassionate and upgraded me to room 1215. It was nicer and more comforable. If you end up in a room that ends in 15, be prepared to close your curtains if the neighbor room to the right leave their balcony/bathroom lights on at night. The pool deck is really nice and the view of Diamond head from there is one of the best. It's even better if you have a room on the east side with a window. I only give it a 2 rating for cleanliness because of the mildew smell. I'd come back to the room each afternoon and even with the windows open, it still had that smell. I ended up buying some room freshener from a nearby ABC store to deal with the smell. All in all, it's a nice place to stay if you get a decent size room.

A perfect vacation!

If you are looking for a great value and ideal location, the Queen Kapiolani is for you. It is an older hotel but has had some remodeling done. They have a pool on the 3rd floor, if you don't feel like going to the beach. Our corner room was on the 15th floor overlooking Diamond Head. We had a king size bed w/ a small refrigerator for soda, etc... I called a week ahead to request a upper floor room. The staff were all very friendly, the room was clean and comfortable, and we were two blocks from Waikiki beach. As I stated before, this is a good value hotel, not a 5 star. There are enough of those around, but you will have to pay more if that's what you desire. We were very happy with our experience at the Queen Kapiolani, and will return.
