Old-world elegance on Waikiki's hottest strip
Graciously residing on prime oceanfront, the Moana Surfrider is a vision of luxury and relaxation. Opened in 1901 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the "First Lady of Waikiki" boasts a long registry of the rich and famous, including Frank Sinatra, Amelia Earhart, Prince Edward of England and Joe DiMaggio. Afternoon tea on the seaside veranda is a celebrated tradition. Trademark Westin amenities, fine dining and one of Waikiki's best spas create the total package.
Highlights
- Westin's Heavenly Bed, Heavenly Bath and fine linens
- Spend the day relaxing in the hotel's picturesque and historic banyan tree courtyard
- Moana Lani Spa, ranked as one of the Top 50 Spas by Spas of America
Location
The hotel touches the sand, with some of Waikiki's best swimming and surfing directly offshore. It's midpoint along Kalakaua Ave., Waikiki's main dining and shopping strip, and the designer-boutique Royal Hawaiian Center and lively souvenir bazaar International Market Place are within a block's walk.
Rooms
The hotel features three distinct wings with a total of nearly 800 guest rooms. All rooms blend classic design with contemporary decor enhanced by luxurious Island-style details, signature Westin amenities, bathrobe and flat-screen TV. The Westin Heavenly Bed is a major draw, with custom pillowtop mattress and snuggly feather pillow. In-room Wi-Fi is available (fees apply).
Dining
Several excellent dining selections are on the property. The Veranda, overlooking the banyan courtyard, offers a buffet breakfast, while afternoon tea is a tradition dating back to the earliest days of the hotel. From midmorning until midnight, sashimi, wagyu beef burgers and mai tais are on order at the Beach Bar, beneath the historic banyan tree. Honolulu Coffee Co. is the place for Kona coffee and a gelato. Beachhouse at the Moana, an oceanfront fine-dining oasis, serves up fresh Island cuisine and sunset views.

Terrific holiday
Fifth time in Waikiki but first time at The Moana Surfrider. It was fantastic, love the history and the location on Kalakaua. Beach is shallow but rocky however almost worth the toe stubbing are the turtles coming up for air almost right beside you, feeding on the rocks below. Fantastic. Friendly and helpful staff though out the hotel. Would definitely choose Moana Surfrider again. As there are always the pool chair hoggers that just throw their towel down at 7am to "reserve" the chair, the pool staff actually check and enforce the unattended one hour rule! I love it.

Great Girl's Getaway
The hotel and the staff were friendly and courteous. The room was clean and the perfect size for our 4 night stay. Since we were staying at an ocean front hotel we did expect more hooks, racks to hang our wet towels and swimsuits. We were surfing as well and found that we were having to be very creative to hang our wet items. The food in the open dining area was disappointing. The prices were extremely high for the poor food quality and small portions. Although, the cocktails were generous. We did not try the formal dining room. We ate most of our meals at Dukes, next door. The food was delish and fresh and very reasonable. Other than the two issues mentioned above we had a wonderful time and will definately stay at the Westin again. The bed was heavenly! The hotel is beautiful and the location is fantastic. Request a fridge as they are free and the Pantry grocery store is a mere two blocks away. Stocking your fridge with a few snacks and drinks makes for a more confortable experience and saves you a bit of cash.

Waikiki's most elegant property
Moana Surfrider offers its guests a beautiful beachfront property. The main lobby of this famous historic hotel is elegant and classy -- you will NOT find sandy, barefoot surfers traipsing through this lobby. The open air design allows for plenty of outdoor seating in the front and back of the open lobby. There's an outdoor bar with plenty of seating next to the pool. And the beach is just a few more paces beyond the pool. There are rooms in the main building and also in the Tower Wing. I liked staying in the main building because it's just more historic somehow. On the downside, the room didn't have a patio or balcony. My room was also facing Kalakaua Ave where many street artists show up in the evenings. Unfortunately there was a drum set across the street on 3 out of 5 nights which was really quite loud. Next time I will fork out the money for an ocean view room so I don't hear the Waikiki bustle at night. This was my first visit, and all in all I have to say that it's now among my favorite Waikiki hotels with Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Waikiki.

Perfection in Paradise
The historic hotel is centrally located in Wakiki. Nice access to beach, shops and excursions. The hotel helped with tours and has everything for all all types of stays (family, couples, friends) and budgets. Updated fitness center and pool is located just off beach but has privacy. Clean and comfortable rooms. The hotel had several weddings there and would consider it when I get married. It has its own indoor chapel, large patio/lanai for reception of outdoor ceremony and the hotel is perfect to takes pictures. As a photographer, it is ideal.

Short walk from hotel
The location of the hotel has many attractions within walking distance or a short city bus ride. Take the time to walk around and find out what is around first before booking tours.

Great stay, perfect location!
The beach bar was great! My friend and I stayed for 4 nights and the first place we headed to was the beach front bar. Staff was so friendly and knew us by name. We were down there daily for an afternoon or evening cocktail. There were many returning customers there as well. Everyone was very friendly and I would stay there again in a minute. Not to mention its a beautiful hotel!! The only bad thing about the hotel is the onsite dining is expensive but you are within steps of tons of less expensive places to eat.

Service average at best
For a top rate hotel, the service score comes in at average. I witnessed two customer complaints to the front desk and the employee response was hostile each time. No desire by employees to be helpful.
