Old-world elegance on Waikiki's hottest strip

Graciously residing on prime oceanfront, the Moana Surfrider is a vision of luxury and relaxation. Opened in 1901 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the "First Lady of Waikiki" boasts a long registry of the rich and famous, including Frank Sinatra, Amelia Earhart, Prince Edward of England and Joe DiMaggio. Afternoon tea on the seaside veranda is a celebrated tradition. Trademark Westin amenities, fine dining and one of Waikiki's best spas create the total package.

Highlights

  • Westin's Heavenly Bed, Heavenly Bath and fine linens
  • Spend the day relaxing in the hotel's picturesque and historic banyan tree courtyard
  • Moana Lani Spa, ranked as one of the Top 50 Spas by Spas of America
Location

The hotel touches the sand, with some of Waikiki's best swimming and surfing directly offshore. It's midpoint along Kalakaua Ave., Waikiki's main dining and shopping strip, and the designer-boutique Royal Hawaiian Center and lively souvenir bazaar International Market Place are within a block's walk.

Rooms

The hotel features three distinct wings with a total of nearly 800 guest rooms. All rooms blend classic design with contemporary decor enhanced by luxurious Island-style details, signature Westin amenities, bathrobe and flat-screen TV. The Westin Heavenly Bed is a major draw, with custom pillowtop mattress and snuggly feather pillow. In-room Wi-Fi is available (fees apply).

Dining

Several excellent dining selections are on the property. The Veranda, overlooking the banyan courtyard, offers a buffet breakfast, while afternoon tea is a tradition dating back to the earliest days of the hotel. From midmorning until midnight, sashimi, wagyu beef burgers and mai tais are on order at the Beach Bar, beneath the historic banyan tree. Honolulu Coffee Co. is the place for Kona coffee and a gelato.  Beachhouse at the Moana, an oceanfront fine-dining oasis, serves up fresh Island cuisine and sunset views.

family getaway New Years Day

I have been to Oahu at least a dozen times and have always wanted to stay at the Moana. This year I decided to pull the trigger and stayed with my folks and sibs and their young adult children. Wonderful property but if this crowd assembles again for a getaway we weill book three rooms. my only peeve: the street musicians at the Market place across the street allowed to play past midnight was annoying but not the hotel's fault my advise get a room at oceanfront perhaps less noisy

Over-priced and over-rated

The rooms did not have queen beds and were crowded with 2 single beds. The bathroom had only a narrow 6" shelf for placing and using toiletries. There was a "spa check-out fee" that was expensive and unexplainable. However, the entrance, foyer and veranda were charming.

NOT THE WESTIN I'M USED TO

Frankly, I was shocked that this hotel is called a "Starwood/Westin Resort Hotel". The hotel rooms, hallways, elevators, room interiors, showers and bathrooms could have ALL been mistaken for a Holiday Inn. I'm not kidding and I was shocked as a long time Starwood member. The exterior areas (pool area, lobby, restaurants and spa) are Westin quality, but you're not sleeping in the restaurant or pool area. Money spent renovating the wrong areas that definitely need to go to toward a complete and total room & bathroom renovation.

Honeymoon

Upgraded to a 1 bedroom suite upon arrival and provided a bottle of champagne (Kenwood - terrible champagne but really appreciate the thought). We both loved the beach bar and the nightly entertainment which we could hear from our room very clearly on the 5th floor. We liked that, but some may not so would recommend the tower for those that want a more quiet experience. I prefer hotels that are more personalble and know you by name, but I guess for a 750 room hotel, that's just not possible. Overall great hotel, would definitely go back if I ever decide to go back to Waikiki - toooo busy.

Anniversary Dream!

This was a great location for first timers to Hawaii. The beach is literally right out the back door. The actual beach is rather small for such a large hotel - but we still enjoyed it every day. Our room was small and the bathroom even smaller but...that didn't stop us from having a great time. Not that much time spent in our room when the great outdoors was so inviting. My husband says the food and beer ($6.50) was over priced and all my fruity drinks were $10.50 or more at the hotel bar. The ABC Store is right across the street for beer/wine/sodas (better prices but still high) and blow-up rafts to float in the ocean.

2 Blocks N (toward the mountain) a good breakfast cafe Keoni's. Just next door to Keoni's is the Round Pizza or something like that has all the games on TV that you might not want to miss. All your favorite chain restaurants are there too within walking distance.

Great but expensive hotel!

When I first checked in, I was disappointed to see that the room was much smaller than the pictures I looked at online. Fortunately, they still had a couple rooms available in their tower but I ended up paying an extra $80 per night for the room. Make sure you know how large the room that you're getting is. Sure, a king size bed and tv can fit in their room but those things can also fit in my closet at home but I wouldn't call it a "room" (especially at a "resort and spa"). Other than that, the amenities were great and the staff was superb!

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

If you can wait till you get to Hawaii or have someone send you some free guide books that are all over the island you can save alot of money on entertainment and adventures like a luau, para-sailing, submarine tours etc.
