Old-world elegance on Waikiki's hottest strip

Graciously residing on prime oceanfront, the Moana Surfrider is a vision of luxury and relaxation. Opened in 1901 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the "First Lady of Waikiki" boasts a long registry of the rich and famous, including Frank Sinatra, Amelia Earhart, Prince Edward of England and Joe DiMaggio. Afternoon tea on the seaside veranda is a celebrated tradition. Trademark Westin amenities, fine dining and one of Waikiki's best spas create the total package.

Highlights

  • Westin's Heavenly Bed, Heavenly Bath and fine linens
  • Spend the day relaxing in the hotel's picturesque and historic banyan tree courtyard
  • Moana Lani Spa, ranked as one of the Top 50 Spas by Spas of America
Location

The hotel touches the sand, with some of Waikiki's best swimming and surfing directly offshore. It's midpoint along Kalakaua Ave., Waikiki's main dining and shopping strip, and the designer-boutique Royal Hawaiian Center and lively souvenir bazaar International Market Place are within a block's walk.

Rooms

The hotel features three distinct wings with a total of nearly 800 guest rooms. All rooms blend classic design with contemporary decor enhanced by luxurious Island-style details, signature Westin amenities, bathrobe and flat-screen TV. The Westin Heavenly Bed is a major draw, with custom pillowtop mattress and snuggly feather pillow. In-room Wi-Fi is available (fees apply).

Dining

Several excellent dining selections are on the property. The Veranda, overlooking the banyan courtyard, offers a buffet breakfast, while afternoon tea is a tradition dating back to the earliest days of the hotel. From midmorning until midnight, sashimi, wagyu beef burgers and mai tais are on order at the Beach Bar, beneath the historic banyan tree. Honolulu Coffee Co. is the place for Kona coffee and a gelato.  Beachhouse at the Moana, an oceanfront fine-dining oasis, serves up fresh Island cuisine and sunset views.

A short walk to everything

Our plan was to go to the beach every day, and this was the ideal hotel to do it. It's literally about 10 feet from the beach, and there's an outdoor shower to rinse off the sand on your way back in. Paddleboards, surfboards, and the like can be rented about 20 feet down the beach. There are easily 20 restaurants and shops within walking distance. We got a room in the tower. It was spacious and clean and modern. It had a fridge, but no microwave. The balcony was big too. The Wifi network was unreliable. My wife's iPod touch and my Android phone were impossibly slow on the wifi. Next time, I'll bring a laptop and connect to network cable in the room.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Don't rent a car: take a taxi. If you're traveling with two or more people, and you don't plan to visit the other side of Oahu, taxis are an affordable and stress-free way to get around. So much is within walking distance you'll rarely need a taxi anyway. Parking everywhere seemed to cost a lot.

Best of the best

The hotel and its staff did everything possible to make it feel like home. As far as we are concerned, it is, our vacation home away from home.

For what we paid (about $A450

For what we paid (about $A450 per night." stay 3 nights get the next 1 night free") we should have had a full sea view-not a partial shaded side view. One needs to be aware that there is a $US20.95 daily resort fee charge which is not mentioned when booking over the internet, and when you are paying top dollar you should be informed of ALL charges at time of booking. Unless they change it on the website, request it to be taken off the bill. Lovely hotel, great breakfasts, great position.

Westin facilities are always superb.

Westin facilities are always superb. The finest quality beds, bed linnen, pillows, towels, gowns etc. The room was pleasant. The carpet was stained which was a shame for such a fine hotel but everything else was perfect.

The building is being upgraded

The building is being upgraded which is disruptive for the lower floors during working hours. Reception staff at the restaurants were very rude and unatttentive, however wait staff were very good.

March Hawaii Trip

Our first trip to Hawaii in March was for our sons wedding. The Moana Surf Rider was absolutely fabulous. Walk to everything, tours directly from the hotel, relaxing atmosphere, great service with polite staff. Wish we had asked for an ocean view room with balcony. Pricey restaurant but there are many others nearby. Would stay there again in a minute.
