A local hotel in true Honolulu near shopping and the beach

Totally revamped and refreshingly unpretentious, the two-tower Ala Moana Hotel is an island institution. Ala Moana Hotel is a favorite of Hawaii's neighbor island visitors who love the feel of being just outside of Waikiki. Enjoy front-door shopping, great rates and a short walk to an enormous beach. Ala Moana is one block from the Hawaii Convention Center and attracts groups from the mainland. The hotel's 36 floors and more than 1,000 rooms hardly keep Ala Moana a secret, but a surprising find amidst the pack.

Perfect Location

Ala Moana Shopping center is connected to hotel by a walkway. Lots of places to eat in surrounding area. Close to Ward shopping center and theater. Close to Nimitz Highway and also easy to get to the H-1 freeway. Parking is not free anymore. Staff is friendly. Room was clean and very comfortable. There was a fridge and microwave to heat up my leftovers. I would stay here again. Cost a little high (room fee and parking fee). But again, I would stay here during my next trip.

Good location, good hotel

The staff was very courteous. They are walking distance from the beach. We rented a car for the trip and self parking was $20 per day or valet was $25 per day. We did the self parking. Most of the island tours and activities pick you up right at the hotel. Even though we did not use the valet parking the employees there would talk to us and give us great ideas of thigs to see from someone who lives there and not just trying to sell you something. There is so much to do there. I would recommend to rent a car the island is large and the speed limit fluctuates a lot. If you want to see the real ocean and beach you have to get out of waikiki. We found beaches on the east and south sores that were not crowded and you could get into the water with the waves istead of having a wall break the wave before it gets close.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

If you can call and get reservations for attractions before you get there. Things book up fast and all the places try to do everything in the morning. The Go Oahu card is great we used it almost everyday. It was well worth the value.

Not a bad hotel. Staff was friendly. Rooms are kind of small but we didn't spend that much time there so it didn't matter. $20 additional parking charge sucks.

Awesome Stay!!

The hotel was great the staff was friendly and helpful in helping us get around the area (newbies here). The room was spacious and clean and the view was to die for..Just a small walk to the beach was awesome....when we decide to return to the island this would be the place we would come back to. I didn't have the chance to experience the lounge that was attached but the Plantation Cafe was great!

The fact that there is a coordinator to help you pick activities made the vacay a lot smoother and enjoyable. Most of them provide transportation there and back and if not the public transport is not bad!

Very disappointed

My husband & I arrived last Thursday evening. We knew that parking was $20 so when we drove into the lot we were surprised that the gate was open so we were unable to grab a ticket. We went to the reception counter to check in and the customer service agent was very "blah." She wasn't enthusiastic and did not smile at all. We told her that there was no ticket given downstairs for parking and her response was that we should go back downstairs to speak to the attendant... We went downstairs to the attendant to ask about our ticket and THEY TOLD US TO GO BACK UPSTAIRS TO GET ONE FROM THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT. SO INCONVENIENT. We're already tired from all the traveling so very annoyed of course. Our hotel room is SO SMALL. So is the bathroom. Today we didn't even receive room service, we had to call housekeeping to have them bring towels. Yesterday we had issues trying to get to our floor because our key cards weren't working. The agent told us it's because we must have had our cell phones next to them so it messes with signal... I totally disagree since my cell and wallet are never in the same pocket but whatever. I am SO DISAPPOINTED with this hotel, and we're here until Friday. This is our honeymoon trip too! The restaurants they offer here are not that great and are very expensive. But I guess that's what you can expect from any hotel. I NEVER write reviews but I am SO DISAPPOINTED with this place that I HAVE TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE. The only upside to this hotel is the location is good and that internet access is provided in your room. The next time we come back to Honolulu we will NOT be staying here.

Average

Our 3 night stay this past weekend was what i'd say, "alright". Parking after 10pm was quite horrendous. Not to mention, it's $20/day to self park. One day after coming back from being out for most of the day, our room wasn't cleaned yet, (already 4pm). And twice our room door rejected the room key(card), even after we had used it in the elevator to get up to the 9th floor. Yes, I had to walk back down to the front desk. Uuugh! Other than the rooms being quite small, overall I'll say the hotel is okay. Would consider staying there again probably for $110/night, rather than the $137/night that I paid.

Business trip

I travel to Honolulu 2-3 times a year & have found the Ala Moana a great place to stay. The location, parking & away from the majority of tourists is what I look for. The rooms are smaller (Kona Tower) then most but adaquate. Free internet access is a plus! Also, it is a short walk to the Ala Moana Park for a great place to run/walk.

Good location for shopping

IMHO, the hotel's cleanliness can be better. We've noticed moldy spots in the baththub and the bathroom sink. After the first night, the 4 bath towels were replaced with just 2. Water stays hot in the shower area. You shld like either a very hot shower or a cold one. These are the only few minor issues. Other than that, the hotel's location is by far the most important category why we chose this hotel.
