Good Value

Like other reviewer mentioned, this is a 2 star hotel, so don't expect luxury amenities. Agreed with what most other reviewer's comments. Though we got a fairly newly renovated room with a modern touch, but the building is old and need work, it's still pretty good consider the age of the town. However, the staff is very friendly and helpful. Got a water front room with view of Hilo Bay, able to watch sun rise and cruise ship from window, what a nice surprise! Enjoyed the hotel location very much: water front; sounds of nature (ocean waves, tropical birds, and Coqui frogs), next to oriental themed park with huge ancient trees! Can't beat the value! Would definitely stay again!

A real dump

Short on staff and therefore the service is slow, slow, slow. Looks hashed from the outside. They say the inside has been remodeled but its really spartan and looks like they just hired a carpenter to build some walls and a couple of open shelves in the rooms with one coat of flat white paint. The inside of the elevators are beaten up and have lots of grifitti like a freight elevator might have. Its really hard to describe but I would never recommend this place. Right next door, the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is far better in all categories and less expensive. We changed after the first night.

Okay, not fantastic

This hotel is indeed of much repair. The best things about this hotel is that it had a good bed. Elevators were slow, not many good restaurants in the area, we did not get the ocean view room thatbwenhad booked, but did not askmfrontmdesk to change us, because there was an argument between the employees. If you cand find a better hotel in the area do so.

Getaway

Reserved a room for 3. Room was set for 2 and could not get a hold of housekeeping. Stood in line at front desk for a while just to get more coffee packets. No pen or paper in the room? Thank goodness for phone book!

Definitely seen better days, but is on the up-and-up

The Naniloa felt a bit like a ghost town, despite having lots of young people there for a paddling race and soccer tournament when we were there. There isn't a working restaurant on-site, the formerly large tropical pool is a cesspool (with the current pool not much more than a cement hole...with slippery, algae-filled puddles on deck that my son slipped and fell in), and the walkway to the elevators is lined with empty rooms that must have at one point housed a lounge, gift shop, and restaurant. And one whole tower of the hotel is boarded up and looks to be abandoned. Having said all that, we paid a bit extra ($12/night) for an "ocean-view room" (which was actually a bay-view room) and updated amenities. The room was nice and clean, though the floor both in the room and hallway are all tile (no carpet means it has a somewhat loud and cold ambiance). The beds were comfy and the bathrooms spacious. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. On the day we checked out, a front-page story in the Hilo newspaper was touting the re-birth of the Naniloa. For its sake, I certainly hope it happens. It seems to be, given the refurbished "ocean-view rooms," but it's happening very slowly, and it still has a long way to go.

Take a walk and have a bite to eat at the Queen Liliuokalani gardens and/or Coconut Island just a short walk away. Very peaceful and lovely.

Naniloa Volcano Resort

The staffs were friendly and helped us to find a restaurant. Because the hotel does not have a restaurant, we needed to go out. The room was clean and wide enough to take a rest.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

There is an island named Coconuts island. You can go there by walking the bridge. We found a large turtle under the bridge. Because the floor of the room is not covered by mat, guest had better bring a house shoes.

Hilo Stay May 2010

Rooms were very nice. View was great from the partial bay location. Most surfaces were stone or wood little sound cancelling in room. We were in Hilo to see the sights and just gather at the room.
