Getaway

Reserved a room for 3. Room was set for 2 and could not get a hold of housekeeping. Stood in line at front desk for a while just to get more coffee packets. No pen or paper in the room? Thank goodness for phone book!

weekend in the big island

slightly worried while driving towards the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort! a lot of construction going on, the place seemed like a ghost town, and far from a "resort"!! however, our opinions changed as soon as we opened our rooms, they were outstanding. couldn't have asked for a nicer, cleaner place to stay, and the view was fantastic. the staff were unpleasant, and the exterior of the hotel needed a lot of work, but the location and the rooms made this a worthwhile experience on the big island!

Definitely seen better days, but is on the up-and-up

The Naniloa felt a bit like a ghost town, despite having lots of young people there for a paddling race and soccer tournament when we were there. There isn't a working restaurant on-site, the formerly large tropical pool is a cesspool (with the current pool not much more than a cement hole...with slippery, algae-filled puddles on deck that my son slipped and fell in), and the walkway to the elevators is lined with empty rooms that must have at one point housed a lounge, gift shop, and restaurant. And one whole tower of the hotel is boarded up and looks to be abandoned. Having said all that, we paid a bit extra ($12/night) for an "ocean-view room" (which was actually a bay-view room) and updated amenities. The room was nice and clean, though the floor both in the room and hallway are all tile (no carpet means it has a somewhat loud and cold ambiance). The beds were comfy and the bathrooms spacious. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. On the day we checked out, a front-page story in the Hilo newspaper was touting the re-birth of the Naniloa. For its sake, I certainly hope it happens. It seems to be, given the refurbished "ocean-view rooms," but it's happening very slowly, and it still has a long way to go.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Take a walk and have a bite to eat at the Queen Liliuokalani gardens and/or Coconut Island just a short walk away. Very peaceful and lovely.

Spent 3 days here

Arrived late at night and was checked in quickly. Can tell they have been working on the place but still needs a lot of work. Halls were very out dated the room was nice. We had a corner suite with floor to ceiling windows and great view. Overall it was good, but still needs some updating and a good cleaning outside. would stay here again if I had to.

Very good for a couple

The location is at the core of Hilo. Very nice views of the bay. Perfect for people who need the basics without flamboyant pretensions. Clean room; nice staff.

Worth it for the view

They are in the middle of remodeling this hotel. Our room was very clean, but looked unfinished. We got an oceanside room and the view was the best ever! Ocean and mountain right out your window. Staff was very helpful too. Must eat at Ken's Pancakes right around the corner.

Under Rated and Scary!

Minimual staff to start with. Rooms are sparse; no coffee pot, tile everywhere (floors and walls)... not a comfortable experience. Room felt cold, hard, and loud. Conversations actually echoed in the room. I have a TV in the backseat of my SUV that was larger than the one in the room. We felt we were staying at the 'Y'. Anyone over 55 is not going to be able to enter the shower/bathtub. The bottom of the tub is at the floor level... which is OK, but the tub wall is about 26 to 28" tall. I'm 55 years old, in very good health and shape (I bike and hike) and it was an effort to get in and out. The parking lot was dimly lit and had more holes than the Volcanos National Park! The hotels on both sides of this one were brightly lite, parking lots were full of vehicles, and alot of activity was occurring. The Naniloa Volcanoes Resort was a ghost town. In closing, calling this property a resort is a big stretch of the imagination. A budget motel on this property would fair better. You can pay the same price at another hotel/resort nearby for a way better experience. Stay away.....

Cleanest / Upgraded Tower

We came down a hallway of solid echoing tile to our room with noisy college kids in about 4 rooms down the hall. One call to the desk and it got quiet but the managment took the next step and offered to move us down a floor to a wonderful room over the pool and practically over the bay. The room atmospheres are cold. Cold colors and tile everywhere. Harsh flourescent lighting with two normal lamps bed side. The beds were wonderful. While decor is extremely minimalistic its clean and smells good. Nice sized refrig.; tiny coffee pot; no microwave. We would stay again because of the quiet good nights sleep right off the lovely ocean.
