Good Value
Like other reviewer mentioned, this is a 2 star hotel, so don't expect luxury amenities. Agreed with what most other reviewer's comments. Though we got a fairly newly renovated room with a modern touch, but the building is old and need work, it's still pretty good consider the age of the town. However, the staff is very friendly and helpful. Got a water front room with view of Hilo Bay, able to watch sun rise and cruise ship from window, what a nice surprise! Enjoyed the hotel location very much: water front; sounds of nature (ocean waves, tropical birds, and Coqui frogs), next to oriental themed park with huge ancient trees! Can't beat the value! Would definitely stay again!

A relic from the 50s
The hotel is set on Hilo Bay and provides a picturesque view. That is the high point. The hotel looks like a left-over from a by-gone era, as if time has progressed and it hasn't. Of the 3 elevators, 1 worked, but only if it was returned to the Lobby after each use. The interior of the elevator was plywood. The room was very dorm-like. The linens were clean, but the tiled floor was dirty enough to turn the white sock black. The exterior of the hotel was visibly dirty. At check-in, we were handed actual KEYS to the room - quite a unique feature these days. The other hotels in the area looked as bad or worse.

Good location, overall good experience
Without us even asking they gave us an updated room with a king bed. Though we were only supposed to have a garden view we lucked out and ended up with a fantastic view of the ocean. There is no carpet in the rooms but there is white shiny tile. It looked like they didn't cover the bathtub when they did some plastering or something as there was hard, dried up plaster in the tub. The bathroom looked nice and was fully tiled with a large wide sink. The beds were comfortable and the room was mostly clean--we noticed the remodeling was done somewhat carelessly in some small areas EX: you can see some areas where the new paint didn't cover the wall completely in the corners and near the floor. This did not effect us though. The location is great with the ocean and tide pools in the lava rocks just a few feet away from the hotel, we even saw a sting-ray swimming by the edge. It is situated right off banyan drive where there are numerous, large and famous banyan trees. We did not try the breakfast they have on the main level. Yes the elevators were scary with very old and dirty carpet and some panels of the wall not completely re-modeled yet. Also, some other parts of the hotel are still being re-done as well with unfinished paint jobs and a whole open floor next to the pool that looks like they are working on. For us, the remodeling didn't effect our stay and it was overall a good experience

Not stupendous
Our ac worked fine the first night, but was shut off (presumably by house keeping) when we returned the second evening after hiking in Volcanoes Natl Park all day. It didn't work at all that night. The staff was ok and the ocean side view from our room was nice. The place is pretty rundown and looks too be being remodeled very slowly. Good if your on a budget is suppose.

Naniloa - Hilo, HI
Room was ready at check in but when we got to the room there were bath towels on the floor, trash in the basket but everything else was fine and in order. The staff took care of it right away. No iron in the room but avail if you call. The elevators are very slow and looks like only 2 of 3 were in operation. The TV reception is very poor but there are a good selction of stations. They still use metal keys!

Our Stay
Upon arrival we were not expecting over the top but just needed a place to stay that was decent and in Hilo Town. There was adequate parking and the front desk staff was very welcoming. Our room was a renovated room on the 9th floor and it exceeded our expectations. The layout of the room as very nice and the beds were very comfortable. They are definitely in the works of fixing up this hotel but once it is complete it will be gem.

A real dump
Short on staff and therefore the service is slow, slow, slow. Looks hashed from the outside. They say the inside has been remodeled but its really spartan and looks like they just hired a carpenter to build some walls and a couple of open shelves in the rooms with one coat of flat white paint. The inside of the elevators are beaten up and have lots of grifitti like a freight elevator might have. Its really hard to describe but I would never recommend this place. Right next door, the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is far better in all categories and less expensive. We changed after the first night.

Pricey dump
Tge bed was comfortable and the view of Hilo Bay was beautiful. Apart from that, this place is a dump. It is a case of management not putting money back into the property. The ice machine was rusty on the 7th floor. The breakfast buffet was unmanned and at over $15.00 a person, a rip-off. The elevators are insanely slow and the wooden interior walls are carved up with vandalized initials and words. There is a mini fridge in the room, so running next door to a small food mart was a God send...although VERY expensive. This hotel serves nothing but breakfast buffet. There is nothing resort about it. In fact, many of the spots for where shops used to be are long vacated. Even the outside paint is fading and chipping. They make you use Wi-Fi in their lobby and will not give you the password to use it in your room, despite the fact that we had a signal there. I would not stay here again...it was AWFUL.

good for my business trip but needs work
Half of the hotel is being renovated. Slowly. There are no restaurants on site but they do offer a breakfast buffet that i didn't partake in. my room had been recently renovated and was very nice and pleasant with an asian feel. Bed was very comfy and stylish. Bathroom was nice and big and all new. Staff was very nice and courteous. View was nice too. overlooking Hilo bay. Hopefully in the future it will all be finished and upgraded and maybe have a nice bar/restaurant in it overlooking the bay.
