It was Ironman weekend in Kona, so had to stay in Hilo. This was the cheapest I could find w/ decent ratings. Overall, the building was a bit old. The amenities are sparse and very limited open times, but we mainly used it to sleep, so it was very
comfortable, clean and well maintained. it's walking distance to a few restaurants which came in handy for a late night dinner or early breakfast.
The hotel is a mid-century property that has charm, but could use some updating. Rooms were clean, staff was friendly, location was great.
Hotel features (5 = best, 1 = worst):
There are not a lot of "touristy" shopping opportunities in Hilo (other than the Hawaii Candy Company and Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory). Hilo is more of a "local blue collar" type of town... not much nightlife that we could see, no big major resort hotels, just a nice little "local" town.
