Great Stay

Wonderful Hotel. Its an older hotel, but has been taken great care of and still is. From the Staff at the front desk to the cleaning staff, great people to talk to. Very clean, very comfortable. Would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a clean room. The breakfast at the Coconut grill is top notch. Great shopping close by and a lot of good resturants. Ken's Pancake House is great if you eat in, but don't do a carry out.

Very pleasant stay!

Our first trip to Hilo. We drove over from the Kona airport and arrived about 4pm. Had a nice dinner at Cafe Pesto. The next morning we enjoyed breakfast at the hotel restaurant, the Coconut Grill. Breakfast was included with the room and we had a choice of three. I chose the "healthy" which was papaya, banana bread and strawberry yogurt, my husband had the 'locals breakfast' of bacon, eggs, toast and OJ was also included. We drove down the south end of the island thru Puna and back. Then we visited the World Botanical Gardens and the falls located on the property. Second morning we checked out and drove the 4 mile scenic drive off the highway which we recommend. Gorgeous! On our way back to the highway (19) we enjoyed yummy smoothies at What's Shakin. Lovely trip. Next time we want to visit the Tsunami and Lyman museums.

Old Hawaii at it's best, friendly!

Old Hawaii at it's best, definitely fit the tropical island vibe I love. Everything in that area is a bit rural (people love it or hate it) and the the location wasn't totally perfect--it was kind of off a highway--but it's a short walk to the ocean and close to Volcanoes National Park and Rainbow falls so it was perfect for us. Staff was friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we got what we wanted out of our visit...even telling us where the locals were letting visitors spot lava when the pretentious park rangers wouldn't, and telling us to call them (hotel staff, not rangers) ahead of our next visit so they could contact people they know and figure out where we could see lava! The rooms were old but kept very clean and comfortable and had old Hawaiian flair. Nothing fancy, but very islandy which I would take any day over hotel rooms with all the bells and whistles but no character. Even though[fixtures, tvs, decor] are a bit dated, they are maintained very well. Anybody complaining about the aesthetics here are expecting a 5 star hotel for 2 star prices. We're very young and active so for us it was a perfect way to save a little extra money and do the things we wanted to do, and a comfortable place to lay our heads afterwards. To Sum up: Hotels are for sleeping in our opinion. No bugs in the room, comfortable/clean bed and accomodations, cable to fall asleep to, the coqui frogs weren't loud...what more could you want? Maybe if you aren't as active as we are and are planning to be in the hotel more (which still probably wouldn't make a difference to us), or are used to staying in hotels with higher star ratings, you wouldn't enjoy it as much as we did...but we would absolutely stay here again!

Go to Pond's across the street and get the calamari steak in the lemon-butter caper sauce--Seriously the best meal I had on any of the islands! Then go to Ken's Pankcake House for breakfast!

Not what expected

We really only slept at the hotel, didnt do much else there. I felt the hotel was smaller and the name was a bit miss leading to me. Only plus was that it was located like a minute or 2 from town and the shopping center.

helo seaside hotel

Although the hotel was old in appearance, the garden inside the hotel was beautiful with many flowers. The room is not wide but was enough to spend a night for a single or couple travellers.

ok

staff was friendly. hotel was quiet but it looked easy for others to get into our room from outside even though there was minimum and very loose security lock on the window. it was difficult to go to and leave from our room with suitcases because of the stairs. The room had a refrigerator but not dryer. Two towels were prepared for three of us. I will only recommend to young adults and those who will not stay too much inside the hotel.

Good value and great location.

We stayed in a garden room at the Hilo Seaside Hotel and enjoyed the room and view. The room was clean and we encountered no problems. This is not a 5 star resort hotel, but a great place to stay and a good price for travelers. We came to Hawaii to see the sights, not to stay in one place, and this fit our needs. This is a hotel, not a resort. We were especially glad to have a small fridge in the room. The front desk was very helpful on telling routes to drive. I had been hesitant from reading earlier reviews, but we thoroughly enjoyed our room. Would stay here again, if/when we return to Hawaii.
