People in the next room were bound to win a prize ...
I travel on business and tend to stay at less expensive hotels. This hotel is cheap and it reflects cheap. Mold and rust in the bathroon, stained carpet and water damaged ceiling. Walls between rooms were paper thin. Like the old Paul Simon's song, the people in the next room were bound to win a prize, they were going at it all night long i am very hard of hearing, I wear hearing aids, and if I can hear people talking in the next room without my hearing aids in, then there is not any sound insulation between the rooms. The only thing that saved the night was that the airconditioner was so noisy that it helped drown out the neighbors. I have stayed at many other hotels in Hawaii in the same price range but this was the worse. I would only stay there again if it were the last resort available.

Hilo Bay Hotel is a DUMP ...
Hilo Bay Hotel is a dump. The faucet was jammed; the bathtub did not drain properly; and the hotel is totally noisy all night long due to birds yaking away in the trees just outside. Great location - but otherwise a dump. Best for 1-2 nights stay - tops. Anyone looking for a longer duration stay in Hilo should AVOID this hotel.

Keep Looking
The staff was wonderful, friendly and very helpful. I live on O'ahu and thought it would be nice to spend my money at a local place. Not the best choice. It's a nice location if your visiting the Volcano. It is VERY old and needs some serious TLC. The resturant???? Don't bother. The food was horrible and very over priced. They closed early both Friday and Saturday night b/c they had no business. Wonder why. We actually ate cup of soup bought from the Uncle Billy's General Store. The room??? SMELLY and the mattress's are probably as old as I am. A/c was also dicey. I would not stay there again.

Bad Uncle Billy's
Older hotel that has not been updated. Glad we stayed only one night. Limited parking so we had to park on the street. Would not stay there again.

Don't stay here
Customer service is very good. However the hotel sucks. The smell of humidity is bad, and found couple unwanted guess (bugs) crawling around the room. it's not really cheap for the price either, but next time I will pay a little bit more to stay at a much more comfortable place.

They should call it the Mold Hotel!
The room was infested with mold and mildew. The AC unit in the window was from the early 1980's. The staff there was very unhelpful. It was so bad that I considered sleeping in my rental car. We left the very next morning and drove as fast as we could away from the ghetto of Hilo.

The Honeym00ning Couple
Worst... hotel... ever....
You have to be kidding me. How this place remains in business is a mystery to me. It must be entirely first time guests, as the location is very close to the Hilo airport and Hilo Bay. Where to start? The "windows" to the outside are not in fact solid paned windows but rather slats that you can either open like blinds or attempt to close as far as possible. When "closed" they don't do the least bit to keep out the noise from outside. If you are a fan of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Hawaiian Night Frogs, this will not be a problem for you. If on the other hand you prefer sleep instead of the chirping of frogs all night you will be sorely disappointed by staying here. Next comes the air conditioners. One second it hums away quickly enough, then the next second it jacks into high gear and it's as if you are a spectator at a NASCAR race. How about the beds. The linens were not blatantly dirty but I certainly didn't feel like I was sleeping on a clean bed and my wife was disgusted. On our stay, we were the lucky recipients of a room with a door to an adjacent room where someone proceeded to turn the lights on and off repeatedly for hours. The bathrooms were acceptable and clean. The hotel staff was very friendly. As mentioned, the location is good. However there is another hotel next door that was I think $5 cheaper and I can't imagine it could be nearly as bad as this place. It almost ruined our honeymoon, as we barely slept at all and it caused my wife to get extremely upset with me for not paying attention to all of the terrible reviews. Don't make the same mistake I made. I would have rather stayed in our hotel in Kona for $100 more per night and woken at 3:30am to drive to Hilo to make our 8am flight. I certainly would have gotten more sleep. No amount of savings was worth the awful experience we had here.

Cheap does not always mean acceptable
Our experience was not good at this hotel. It was very old and not kept up at all. I was not expecting a room air conditioner in a hotel. It smelled moldy which I am allergic to. The bathroom had mildew in between the tiles and was not what I considered even standard. The continental breakfast consisted of toast, english muffins, mini muffins and some tropical fruit. There was no cereal, dry or hot, nor was there any yogurt, hard boiled eggs or real orange juice, items I would expect to see in any other continental breakfast. We had to go out to breakfast instead of eating at the hotel. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
