Very nice, but could do better

This hotel is in a great location - but it's also in a time warp (renovation is needed, come on Castle Resorts spend some money) Even so, we still had a great stay. Our room had a view of the Banyan Trees Coffee machine in the room - but as mentioned, you had to pay for refills. No ironing board either had to ask for one. We ate at the restaurant on the first morning, food cold and not too good. Would love to come back to Hilo and stay there again. It is an old hotel, but still has a lot going for it.

Just OK

We spent a lot of time sightseeing and hiking in the nearby National park plus other sightseeing excursions on the western side of the island. The hotel location was very easy to get to and from. The location, overlooking Hilo Bay was great, the rooms were clean and comfortable, but we could easily hear noises from the rooms next door, such as the people using the bathroom and so on.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

Be sure to check out the very scenic drive just north of Hilo along the old highway. It has great fresh fruit stands, beautiful short hikes and a very good botanical garden plus some excellent shore access areas.

Whirlwind Overnighter

The Hilo Hawaiian is easily one of the nicer hotels in Hilo -- it's just that all of the hotels in Hilo are a tad sketchy. The age of the hotel makes it feel a little kitschy and worn-out, but the staff at the Hilo Hawaiian are super friendly, and our stay was uninterrupted and private. Parking is free and plentiful. A slightly earlier check-in time would have been nice (3pm just feels late to me). The infestation of Coqui frogs is especially apparent from this hotel as soon as the sun goes down.

Convenient, free parking

I only saw my room during the late night and early morning. I was in Hilo for a family funeral and so did not have much time in my room. The lobby area had been re-done since I last stayed there a few years; however, the rooms are still a little lacking. For the price it was great and can't beat the convenience. The restaurant and bar are great too!

Nothing Special

Nothing really stood out about this hotel at all - good or bad. It was just your average, ordinary hotel.

Ok for staying

The location is good. One restaurant stuff for breakfast was extremely unattentive and unfrinedly.

Peaceful and simple

We went there to get away and visit family on the Hilo side of the Big Island. The hotel is definitely old as well as all of the furniture. But the staff was friendly and helpful when necessary. If you're looking for something to do on this island though, stay in Kona.

It's good. We liked it.

We stayed there for 4 nights. We loved the bed. It's very comfortable compare with the one we stayed at Kona. The location is good. We can see the old part of town and it's very convenience to go to any stores, restaurants and to the hotel. I hope the hotel has a hot tub.

Nice place to stay in Hilo

Enjoyed the scenic drive getting to the hotel through Banyan Drive. Grounds around the hotel and nearby park are very beauiful and nice to stroll through. The hotel is dated, but clean with good size rooms. Staff at the hotel bar are very nice and drinks flowed well. Would stay here again!
