out of date, good location

This hotel is woefully out of date and is not a pleasant stay. Beds are uncomfortable, and room was not very clean. good location in Hilo though. No WiFi in the rooms either, which is a pain. good for one night to crash, but nothing more....

Hilo Hawaiian

The staff makes this hotel. You can't expect the grandeur of the Kona side of the island hotels, but for Hilo and the location in town, it is always great to stay here.

Temporary Stay

Overall, the stay at the hotel was OK. Its amenities are a lot better than the two hotels next to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. For some unknown reason, housekeeping missed cleaning the room for two consecutive days which we called the front desk and housekeeping was at the door within 20 minutes after the call.

The hotel gives you a $5.00 per day ticket if you dine at their morning or evening buffet when you check in. If you miss a day, you can always turn in a unused ticket at the front desk and exchange it for the current day.

Castle Hilo Hawaiian

A brief stay in Hilo took us to the Hilo Hawaiian. The building is obviously not new, and a bit shabby in places, but the atmosphere is very comfortable. We really enjoyed being on the bay with the island park and Japanese garden, the friendly staff, and the laid-back ambiance of Hilo. We also enjoyed the Hawaiian's excellent Friday night seafood buffet. If flash and cool factor are what matter most to you, look elsewhere. If you like a comfortable, homey feeling (as hotels go) at a reasonable price in a beautiful location, you might consider the Hilo Hawaiian.

Wish there was a better hotel in Hilo...

Hotel selections in Hilo are slim, there seems to be a lack of national chains which is disappointing because chains have quality standards. We choose this hotel in attempt to get the best of what looked like a bad set of choices going in. I don't know if this was the case, but our experience was awful. The room was dingy and had a funky smell. The room has not been updated since the hotel was built, save for a new flat panel TV. There were a massive amount of "body fluid" stains on the mattress and sheets, we had to have housekeeping replace them. On top of that, the hotel charged extra for internet and didn't provide coffee for the coffee machine. Bottom line, wish we could have found a decent hotel in Hilo, but this wasn't it. The location was good but not much else. We felt "nickle and dimed" by a horrendously dirty hotel.
