A Great Holiday in Hilo

The good things about this hotel are that it is very close to the airport and is in a wonderful location right on Hilo Bay. The hotel is extremely dated and needs some refurbishing. The only amenities at all were an on site swimming pool which could use a replastering and a coffee maker in the room. The rooms themselves were spacious, but again, very dated. Cleanliness was so-so. There is no restaurant on site. When I booked this hotel the Cheap Tickets site said they served breakfast. They definitely do not. There are a few eating places within walking distance, but the better restaurants are farther away in the main part of town. I'm not particularly fussy when it comes to hotels. I don't need fancy chandeliers and an on site spa. If it's fairly clean, has a good bed and a shower, it's fine by me so for my minimal requirements, this place was a good value.

Great Value

The staff was a bit aloof and unwilling to help but overall its a great location. Renovations seem to be perpetual based on reviews from last year and the fact it's still going on.

Better than we expected

Reviews were not the greatest but we didnt think it was that bad. They are in the process of renovation. The only negative thing is that when people talk in the hallway especially at night it is really loud.

what a disappointment

At the desk there was a sign saying that all room phones did not work, and to use your cell phone to call the front desk. One of the lights in the bathroom did not work. A/c did not work.... coffee pot and 2 cups, but no coffee in room. One elevator did not show which floor it was stopping at, and at least one floor (7th) had a handwritten 7 on the door frame of the elevator to let you know which floor you have arrived on.

New Ownership Two Weeks Ago

A great locale, the original Hilo hotel is currently in a state of disrepair. The staff was nice, but the tile flooring choice for the halls that have been updated made for quite a loud hall noise throughout our stay. I think the cost is a bit high for the current state of the place. I would suggest an exterior paint job pronto and faucets in the tub to allow easier bathing of keikis (kids) along for the trip. Had a good time on the island, it's a place to rest your head if nothing else.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

If heading towards Hilo book your car first. They scam out the cars and charge exorbitant rates otherwise.

Fair for sleeping accomodations

the hotel was okay for sleeping in but it appeared to be in a state of renovations. there were dried up gnats or mosquitoes stuck to the bathroom ceiling, the air conditioner was not functioning to its full capacity, and the bathroom tub looked like an older tub with tile walls built around it making it slightly difficult to climb into.

I'll Stay at the Naniloa Again

1st stay Aug 2010; 2nd stay May 2013. Yes the hotel is old, built in the mid 60's, but a decent job has been done to make the property presentable. Renovated rooms are very nice, I was actually impressed. Staff are friendly. Week before the stay, there was a TV news report that was very negative, including negative comments by the Hawaii County Mayor. Thought about cancelling my reservations. Thank God I didn't because I enjoyed my stay. If you need a place to sleep I'd recommend the Naniloa. The only amenities are a swimming pool and a free continental breakfast. And of course the beautiful parks and ocean front.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Parks, Liliuokalani Park (Japanese theme) and Coconut Island are beautiful, just a short walk from the Naniloa.
