Decent hotel for the money
It is a decent hotel if all you intend to do is sleep in the room. For the most part the rooms are clean and spacious. However, the decor is old and outdated.

Dining tip:
Short drive from hotel
Avoid eating at the hotel restaurants. Go to Ken's House of Pancakes for breakfast and to Hilo Bay Cafe for dinner. Both are just a short drive away from the hotel. Great food and it will save you some money compared to eating at the hotel.

hotel shows age. Musty smell, but overall clean. Was OK for the price because it was half price on line booking. Not much to choice from in Hilo. Hotel does have a wonderful view of the bay, and the park like setting.

Very Nice Hilo Hotel
Our room had a wonderful Bay View, weather was great, slept with balcony doors open. Room & hotel was very clean, but spent so much time sight-seeing didn't spend much time at hotel. Breakfast was wonderful! Ordered omelettes every morning & ate on balcony overlooking Hilo Bay.

Hilo Gem
We were amazed at the sizing of the room and its location on the property, ocean-view and windows for ventilation. The property is centrally located in order to appreciate all of the great offerings of Hilo town.

Perfect area to stay in
The hotel itself was average. The big seller here is the location! Minutes away from the airport and shops in Hilo, away from the tourist trap in kona and it just felt like a real taste of Hawaii. Gas prices were cheaper ( believe me-it adds up after awhile!) close to the waterfalls and volcanoes, and a beautiful 2-3 hours away from the kona coast. A perfect place to scout the entire island from!

Money-saving tip:
Not Applicable
Always fill up in Hilo! Gas prices were on average 25-30 cents cheaper than in the other parts of the island! Unless you have a Costco membership, you won't find anyplace for less. A full tank will take you around the whole island. (I rented a jeep wrangler)

Almost great
I'd say this place could be excellent with a few minor tweaks. - No room service. For a place of this class and price I'd expect there to be room service. They have a restaurant and lounge, but no room service. - Cleaning schedule: our room was never serviced during a 3 night stay. The 1st morning, I don't know why they didn't service the room. We weren't there for a long time but when we came back - no service. I didn't mind too much. But then the 2nd morning, they left a note saying we had the "do not disturb" sign up when they came to service the room. I guess that's fine, but I would have liked it if they tried again later. Not getting the room serviced at all takes my review down a notch. However, my general feeling was that the place was well-run and they took care of their guests. I believe the room-servicing was more of an accident than normal operating procedure. The staff was very friendly. The location is very nice, and their breakfast buffet is pricey (like everything else in Hawaii) but a good value (relative to other Hawaii values, anyway). If you don't care about room service, I'd definitely recommend it.

The hotel lanai had grass growing. if not grass something green growing in the lanai. the ac is really small. there's dust on the lamp. the TV was nice. the bed sheets had stain already there. it was like they didn't wash it enough. other than that the dinner was nice because it was a buffet. the parking was free which was really nice.
