Lodging without any frills
It was an old hotel, but clean. No frills...place to sleep. Surrounding area was peaceful and a nice park next door for walking. No beach area and the pool area was isolated and no amenities. Good breakfast buffet.

big fish in a small pond
It was expensive, really expensive, i expected more, it was supposed to be my treat to myself but it was anything but. The room was furnished similarly to any number of atlantic city motels i've been to, the bed cover was fraying, the bar closes at 9, breakfast is limited, buffet only. no airport shuttle. internet was pay except wifi in lobby. i stayed at a 25$ hostel after, and got free wifi, airport and local drop offs and a bottle of wine..

Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
PROS: The view from the restaurant is amazing, and the food was reasonably-priced. The view of coconut island is mostly blocked by the fronting palm trees, so if you want a view of the entire bay then get a room as high as you can. The room had an old but quiet AC, but by the 2nd night discovered that AC is not necessary as the room temperature was very comfortable overnight. The room is spacious. The elevators are fast, and choose the underground parking so you don't have to walk in the rain. Adjacent to Liliuokalani Park, but eaily accesible to anywhere you might want to go to in Hilo and beyond. The golf course is right across the street. CONS: No wireless internet access provided by the hotel, but wired access is provided in the rooms...unknown if it is free or not. Computers in the lobby (4) are not free. Can hear toilets flushing in the morning, so not completely sound-proof, though the outside noise is blocked-out.

The continental all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet was a hit for $5.99. You have two buffet choices at breakfast...choose the continental and stuff yourself on fruit, cereal, toast, croissants, etc.

Good Times
Had a good experience at the hotel. Thought the food and bar prices were a little high but the accommodations were nice and for the area of Hilo I thought that it was a nice spot.

Decent hotel for the money
It is a decent hotel if all you intend to do is sleep in the room. For the most part the rooms are clean and spacious. However, the decor is old and outdated.

Dining tip:
Short drive from hotel
Avoid eating at the hotel restaurants. Go to Ken's House of Pancakes for breakfast and to Hilo Bay Cafe for dinner. Both are just a short drive away from the hotel. Great food and it will save you some money compared to eating at the hotel.

hotel shows age. Musty smell, but overall clean. Was OK for the price because it was half price on line booking. Not much to choice from in Hilo. Hotel does have a wonderful view of the bay, and the park like setting.
