'Unplugged' Hanalei Colony Resort has low-key style and unexpected touches
Unspoiled, unplugged, unforgettable. That is the tagline for Hanalei Colony Resort. It captures the laid-back spirit of this retreat that feels as if it might be at the end of the world. At heart, Hanalei Colony Resort is about connections -- friends and family to each other and everyone to what nature has created. There are no TVs, stereos or telephones in the accommodations, so travelers longing for serenity will find it here. Hanalei Colony Resort has just 48 condos on five acres fronting a two-mile secluded stretch of sand.
Highlights
  • No TVs or phones in condos
  • Hanalei Day Spa
  • Weekly luau
  • Babysitting (fees apply)
Rooms
All Hanalei Colony Resort condominiums are the same size and floor plan, each with two bedrooms, full kitchen, lanai and large picture windows. Plantation-style architecture evokes the past of Kauai, and the overall ambiance is laid-back island style. Custom-made furniture is a nice touch. What is different is where condominiums are located. Premium ocean units are 10 feet from the beach, oceanfront units 30 feet away. Ocean-view units are 150 feet from the sand while garden-view condos sit 250 feet from shore. In a nod to the 21st century, condos have complimentary in-room wireless access.
Features
The relaxed atmosphere is enough to melt away stress, but Hanalei Colony Resort also has a spa. Parents needing adult-only time can request babysitting (fee applies), perhaps to dine together at the on-site restaurant or maybe to spend a couple of hours reading by the pool. Weekly continental breakfasts and cocktail parties bring guests together, and when it is time to take a break from relaxing, Hanalei Colony Resort has a personal concierge to help arrange tours and offer sightseeing tips.
Dining
Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant was voted Best New Restaurant on Kauai when it opened in 2006 by Honolulu Magazine. It remains among the top three eateries on Kauai, serving lunch and dinner in a beachfront setting. The menu has Greek, French and Middle Eastern influences along with local fish and Pacific Rim favorites. Guests can start their day at Napali Art Gallery & Coffee Shop, and there is also a weekly luau.

Heaven !!

This hotel and its location gives you a total experience of what Kauai is all about ! The rooms are super spacious and beautiful with a small kitchen. ALL rooms have either a deck or a balcony. The hotel is just on the beach and even our room with partial view of the beach was very enjoyable. The staff is super friendly and there is transportation available for free until 5 pm. The hotel beach is not a good beach for swimming but the hotel offers transportation to wonderful and very close beaches such as Ke-e and Tunnels beach. I will stay here again where I go back to Kauai.

better in summer

Kaua'i is raining and windy in the winter, especially in the north, where the Hanalei Colony Resort is located. It is quite remote, and requires a lot of driving to get to the sunny southern part of the island. This is probably not an issue in the summer, but was in the winter. The beds were comfortable, and they provided all the pool and bath towels you want. If that's what's important to you (and having a phone, reliable internet, TV is not), this is your place.

Relaxing

This is a very relaxing, older facility; very clean and comfortable. Workable kitchen. Wifi works great in the room. No phones or tv so perfect if you want to get away. The beach in front is pretty but not swimable- sign warns of dangerous currents. The restaurant nearby does have good views of the beach and ocean, and the food is good, if a bit pricey ($24 for a "gyro" plate- essentially a de-constructed gyro sandwich on a plate. Most other entrees are $33 and up) Still worth it for a pleasant, ocean-front dinner. Good wine list. The pool and public hot tub are clean and nice.

Time-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Stock up on bevvies and food for cooking, if you're intending to do that, in town before coming out. Or hit the small store marked with a "Last Chance" sign on the road to the hotel. Decent beer selection but not good for food. The room has a full-size fridge.

Peaceful and beautiful, though a bit remote

Despite that it looks like a bit of a dive from the outside, we were amazed at how nice the room interiors and amenities were, and at the really outstanding staff. Overall, the location was a little remote. Great if you are headed to the Napali coast, but its a mildly harrowing 10-15 minute drive from Hanalei and the restaurants/supermarket/etc town amenities up the road. That could be a great thing since you have amazing beaches and hiking so close by that are therefor that much more private, but its a bit of a hassle by the same token.

Honeymoon

Hanalei Colony Resort is fantastic. The setting is incredible, the rooms are very nice, very comfy and very spacious. The close access to the beach was amazing. I would highly recommend it to couples, or families. The resturant was very expensive but the food was great. The little coffee shop located next to the parking lot was wonderful too.

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

The small town of Hanalei has numerous neat little shops, a grocery store, numerous places to eat and places to rent equipment. Much less busy than other areas on the Island.

Belated honeymoon bliss

My husband and I Were married labor day weekend 2011 and Hawaii was always my husbands first choice for a honeymoon. We waited til march to come so that we could leave bad weather behind at home and thoroghly enjoy what Kauai had to offer. Although hcr is off the beaten track it's his very fact that gave us the secluded, noninvasive, and unspoiled feel we wanted. It also gave us a great tour of the island as we drove from hcr to the east and south coasts of kauai... Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful drive. The lack of tv was great and the wifi was greatly appreciated. Housekeeping was fantastic and if there was anything extra we needed u guys had it. Having the windows open at night to catch the ocean breeze and having the waves lull us to sleep is a dream come true for mainlanders. I (wife) made good use of the spa and had a relieving 1 1/2 hour massage that was even better then expected cuz of being surrounded by the beauty of Kauai . U have great accessibility to gorgeous beaches and trails on the north side but it's still very easy to get to the rest of the island (landslides and road blocks permitting :-P) couldn't have asked for more!

Unplugged & Real

This small resort offers a place for a family to get to know one another again, no phones, no TV, no internet(oops!-they have wi-fi, if you must). The grounds are immaculate. The pool area is updated and even a serene "wishy-washy hale" (laundry area) that is first rate. If you go with teenagers, they may be a bit surprised to find some of the best snorkeling and surfing beaches among the islands. The condo-like units allow for adults and two kid(max) privacy, kitchen(small), bathroom ample, and outdoor Hawaiian nature at its best. Hope you give it a try. I brought my family here 35 years ago and it is still the place we(grand kids included) like the best of all the islands and place to stay. NORTH SHORE YOU ROCK!
