Vintage roadside stay along Savannah’s historic district

Experience a slice of Savannah's recent historical past at this renovated 1960s roadside inn on Oglethorpe Street, west of MLK in downtown Savannah. Self-described as the hippest hotel in Savannah, the inn embraces vintage appeal with quirky amenities like Moon Pies on the pillows and a continental breakfast of Krispy Kreme doughnuts and coffee. While the inn sits on the fringe of the historic district, guests can easily walk to downtown attractions or board trolley tours one block away.

Highlights
  • A local landmark, the Thunderbird boasts classic roadside rooms with vintage style
  • Downtown location within walking distance of historic district attractions
  • Pets welcome (fees apply)
Rooms

True to roadside-motel origins, the Thunderbird Inn features 42 classic, outside-accessible rooms outfitted in 1960s retro décor. Rooms come equipped with double beds, pairs of queens or a king bed. All beds have pillow-top mattresses and guests receive Moon Pies, not mints on their pillows. Room amenities include mini refrigerator, coffee and tea station, work desk, high-speed Internet access and cable TV. Spacious bathrooms have fluffy towels and magnifying make-up mirrors.

Features

The retro Thunderbird Inn offers an affordable alternative to chain motels with similar features in the vicinity of downtown Savannah. Located just west of the intersection of Oglethorpe and MLK Streets, guests can walk a few minutes to reach the Savannah Visitors Center (the starting point for trolley tours and home to a museum) and the popular river walk along River Street. For breakfast, enjoy Krispy Kreme doughnuts and coffee. The 24-hour front desk doubles as a concierge service, where guests can obtain itinerary recommendations, arrange tour tickets or restaurant reservations.

Failed to follow through

We booked this hotel based on its price, proximity to downtown, and the little extras it promised, like leaving moonpies on the pillows and having a Krispy Kreme buffet for breakfast. The location was great; it is easily walkable to downtown. However, there were no moonpies, and the second day they were out of Krispy Kreme by 9 a.m. Not the end of the world, but disappointing all the same. We ran into one problem in which we had no towels the second night. When we called the front desk, they were prompt in bringing some, but they should not have had to do so. Overall, it was a clean, decent place to stay, but we didn't get the little extras which we, frankly, paid the extra for.

Just right

I found the Thunderbird Inn to be exactly what I was looking for in my quick visit to Savannah. Amenities were well within the price range, the staff was ridiculously cheerful and helpful, and my room was clean and comfortable. I don't know what else I could want out of the experience.

The Thunderbird Inn

Good: 1.Location is very good. 2. Sound insulation very good Problems: 1. Parking does not have room if Motel is booked. 2. Liquid soap without dispenser is nonsense 3. No extra toilet paper 4. The breakfast- nothing good about it. I prefer to pay less without breakfast. So many good food places around.

Short Savannah Trip

Great atmosphere. I needed to get away for a while and it was so nice to stay at a place that didn't utilize boring, neutral colors but tasteful blues and reds and yellows in the rooms. The beds were comfortable and clean. The mini-fridge was nice to have. Donuts and coffee and tea in the morning. All of the staff we interacted with were very nice and helpful. Location is great since you can walk a few blocks to the historic district and not worry about parking. I would stay here again for the atmosphere alone, and location, clean rooms, and low-stress environment only add to my wanting to stay here again. (Plus, they are pet friendly. Didn't bring the dog this time but could if I wanted!)

A Cute, Cheap & Convenient Hotel

Only a few minute drive from historic Savannah. The bed was super comfortable. The A/C has a remote control. The hotel is a redone old inn from the 60s(?) so the bathroom space was really small, but I didn't need some fancy spa for my little getaway. Everything was really clean. I read about it being close to a "shady" bus station...I didn't find it to be but then again, I'm not walking around at 1am. Take your car into the historic side. Parking is free on the weekends. I will be staying here again. :)

Thunderbird Inn

Very nice hotel, especially for the price. Located within walking distance of everything in downtown Savannah. Somewhat small room, but very clean and comfortable. Staff was very courteous and helpful. The coffee in the room was de-caf, and I asked at the desk for regular coffee. The attendant said she would have to go to the storage room to get some and would bring it up to my room. I figured she would forget about it and I would have to go back again, but she almost beat me back to the room with it! Overall, a very pleasant experience.
