Terrible

This stay was beyond horrible. I refuse to pay but wanted direction before stopping payment on my card. Summary of stay: 1# Checked in at Travel Lodge Downtown Athens about 4 p.m. 2# Room door was wide open when we got there. 3# Room was terrible: dirty walls, cracked tiles, just a mess. 4# Soon discovered that the door would not close from the inside and would not open from the outside #reason why the door was wide open when we got there#. 5) Was told no other rooms available -- two children with me#. 4) After two hours of sitting in the lobby trying to get help, finally got someone to fix the door. 5) Waiting for two hours, we missed the main reason for the Athens, GA trip -- going to a UGA basketball game. 6) Then discovered no towels -- was told all clean towels are "still wet" and did not get them until 11 p.m. that night! 7) Light bulbs out -- had to replace them myself. 8) Finally, after getting home from dinner about 11 p.m., sat on the bed and the right side fell to the floor! Had to sleep on a slanted bed all night! And these are just the highlights. It gets worse truly -- and there has to be a make good somehow. I don't want to pay or better receive a heavy discount. What are my options other than stop payment on my credit card? Itinerary information below. Thanks -- Kirk Wilks

Don't waste your money

My wife and I booked a room here months in advance, as we were coming in for a wedding. There was a UGA football game that weekend, so we still paid a pretty penny. After arriving at 2am, we were catcalled by drunk guests out on the second level. We buzzed to be let into the lobby (that's right, they don't consider it safe to leave the main lobby door unlocked), checked in with the desk clerk (who was polite and respectful) and headed to our room. First and foremost, the door didn't close properly- I didn't need my key to open the room. The room was dim, dark, and dirty, with cigarette burns on the bedding and stains on the carpet. The air conditioning unit was partially ripped out of the wall. The bathroom had mold in the shower, mold on the toilet, and mold along the caulking of the tub. The condition of the room, combined with the safety concerns of both the door and our lovely "neighbors" upstairs, we refused to stay even one night. We immediately called other hotels in Athens, and found a wonderful spot for the same price as the Travelodge. Trouble was, they only had a room for the next night. The Travelodge room was so bad, we drove to the other hotel, parked in the garage, and slept in our car rather than spend any more time there. The desk clerk had no real authority to issue refunds, but he was kind enough to call his manager and get us a refund for at least the second night. We still had to pay for the first night. While I appreciate that it's impossible to fill a reserved room at 2am, and it's in keeping with company policy, I feel a little cheated. We paid good money with the expectations of a clean, safe bed for the night, and we got none of that. We received an email from the general manager a few days later, acknowledging that we had checked out early, and were unhappy with our stay. The email was, to be blunt, garbage. Had I not been expecting the message, I would have assumed this was someone trying to scam me. There was no company information in the email. No letterhead, no address, no phone number. There were spacing errors, and English was very clearly not the GM's first language. I don't begrudge him that at all, but in business communication, you need to be able to clearly form a sentence. If you can't, then hire an office admin to take care of your official correspondence. Don't waste your money here.

Didn't even change linens?!

Probably the worst hotel stay I have ever had. Upon checking in, we realized the two double beds were smaller than the normal double beds we've seen. The four of us joked our way through it, but the beds were a good six inches shorter in width than the head boards that were permanently attached to the wall. The room was obviously a smoking room despite the claims by the desk personnel that it was not. There was no arguing because it was graduation weekend, and there was NO other option. There was ONE towel for the four of us and the bathroom was DIRTY. We were able to come get more towels, but it appeared to put the limited staff out. The breakfast was terrible. The coffee had flecks of some unknown material in it. The girl did come clean the two containers out and make new coffee, but my God?! The breakfast stayed empty until specific requests were made. Poor. When we came back to the room for our second night after a LONG day of graduation proceedings from Terry and then the big one in Sanford, the room had not been cleaned, the beds had not been changed, and our dirty towels were still on the floor. This was at 10:30 p.m. or so. It even got worse when the guest of some permanent weekly customer on the second floor went off. A crazy fight ensued and several guests complained to no avail. This went on for hours from 2:00 to 4:00 a.m. How could it be worse? I guess we didn't get sick or bed bugs, but it wouldn't have surprised me.

Under new management?

I came to this place in the past and was definitely not going to return until this happened to be the only place that seemed to have a room on game night and they were reasonably priced. To my surprise they were clean! They had brand new tvs and linen. They had a friendly staff at the front desk, I think this place might have a new management team because stuff is totally different than the past.

Great Location, but that's about it

The travelodge in Athens, GA, is walking distance to the university which makes it very attractive. But the hotel is very old, has a musky odor in the room that is tolerable but obvious. I only stayed two days, so it was tolerable. The complimentary breakfast was as basic as a comp. breakfast can get: bananas, raisin bran, bagels, and bran muffins. There was no milk or juice, but coffee was available. The hotel is in a great location, but the structure & environment seems like your staying in a crime-prone location. So it's important to get out of the hotel to get away from the depressing environment. I would guess that the only reason that this hotel is in business is because it's close to the university and is simply somewhere to rest your head after a UGA event. The musky odor was tolerable, but I strongly reccommend bringing a deodorizer. However, my clothes that I didn't wear in my suitcase still smelled like the musky odor from the hotel.

football weekend home

Stayed here for the previous game weekend, and am gonna stay here again following visits. The place is relatively cheaper and just as appealing as other priced places. I stay in athens frequently for football weekend and I randomly had to come to this place do to other places being booked. Surprisingly their rooms were clean, and smelled nice! I would recommend this place to anyone!

The Ugly

Even though the location was not to bad,...the hotel was nasty,...not clean at all. So bad that we had to go buy our own blanket and desinfected agent.
