Tampa Floridan Palace

Classic, elegant hotel built in the 1920's. Lobby and bar feature high ceilings and beautiful furnishings. No breakfast available on-site. Small flat-screen TV in room with very basic channels-no ESPN, FX, TNT, HBO, or other cable channels. Price is a little high compared to nearby other downtown Tampa hotels. Unfortunate, because this hotel should be on historic registry, but likely will go belly up. City of Tampa should purchase this hotel as a historic site. Location is across from Courthouse and near Ybor City, a very cool and historic locale with great nightlife and restaurants.

This hotel is close to the Columbia restaurant, which is a Tampa institution, featuring Spanish cuisine and excellent Flamenco show at 7PM.

Nicely restored, good value

Hotel overall: Feels like staying in a black-and-white movie: lots of attention to early 20th-century period detail in the rooms, elevators (surprisingly fast!), and the grand lobby. Location is close to highway (15 min from airport), 15 min walk to Convention Ctr. Access to good restaurants and entertainment 2-3 blocks South. Polite, professional staff throughout. Breakfast was not included (+$20 including obligatory 20% service charge / tip) but reasonable value: well-stocked buffet of hot and cold items. Room (+): Clean and quiet despite bluesfest several blocks away when I was there. Good storage space and comfy, firm beds. Room (-): Erratic wifi (I was in a corner room), lingering smoky smell in hallways and public space. Missing hairdryer and TV remote needed replacement.

Pleasantly surprised.

In view of some of the reviews, we were pleasantly surprised. The room was recently renovated and comfortable. Strange sheet arrangement, a triple sheet with no blanket in between, but we adjusted it to make it double sheeted. No breakfast available - they said they are trying to make it authentic. Despite these small negatives, we would definitely stay there again.

FLORIDIAN PALACE

IT WAS FAR FROM BEING A PALACE. WE ARRIVED AT 3:OO AND WALKED INTO A UNCLEANED ROOM. ONE VERY SMALL PIECE OF SOAP THAT YOU HAD TO USE ON THE SINK AND SHOWER. ONE SET OF TOWELS PER PERSON FOR A SHOWER FOR THE DAY. IF YOU WANTED TO SHOWER AT NIGHT, YOU OUT OF LUCK. NO COFFE POT IN ROOM, NO ICE MACHINE AND THE FRIG WAS IN A DRESSER AND NOT ON. THE BATHROOM DOOR WOULD NOT CLOSE. AND ON THE TV WAS ONLY THE LOCAL CHANNELS AND NO FREE WIFI. NO CATALOG FOR RESTAURANTS IN THE AREA . TO ORDER DELIVERY FOR FOOD. NO BREAKFAST SERVED. YOU HAD TO CLIMB TWO FLIGHTS OF STAIRS TO GET TO THE LOBBY AT THE ENTRANCE. FOR $200.00 IT WAS THE PITS OF A 5 STAR HOTEL. IT SUCKED.

Historic Hotel

Restored to 1926 look and feel. Beautiful dinning room and lobby. My room was large and spacious. The furniture was also correct for 1926. Comfortable bed. Up-dated bathroom. Excellent shower. Quiet. The faint smell of latex paint lingered in the room. The AC cooled and made random squealing noises. After the first night I accepted the noises as "background". The biggest problem is the neighborhood around the Hotel, it is mostly empty, unoccupied and abandon. Very few open stores and food choices outside of the Hotel. You will need to walk 0.5 to 1.0 miles to find some shopping and alternative restaurants.

Decent Clean Room, but that's all

I stayed for a conference that I was attending at the Convention center. While the hotel is in Downtown it was on the very outskirts but the walk wasn't too bad (< 15 min). The hotel itself is beautifully restored and from an aesthetic perspective is great. However, probably due to its location, it functions at best like a no frills Holiday Inn Express, rather than a Sheraton or Marriot. The rooms were large and for once, it seems that I found a hotel where the water doesn't backup into the tub when showering. However, the beds are not comfortable and you are only given a fleece blanket in addition to the top sheet on the bed. You can control the AC temperature, and I didn't mind, but be forewarned that you will not get a "Heavenly Bed" experience that you do at the Westin. Housekeeping also seemed very basic. One of the 4 nights I didn't arrive back to my hotel until 8pm and housekeeping was only just then about to get to my room, at that point I just declined since I was tired and just wanted to get into bed. There are also no in room refrigerators either, which was a little disappointing since I wanted to keep some beverages cold or bring back some of my takeout. My last comment will be about the in hotel dining. The menu is about 90% Greek/Mediterranean, and there are basically no other options for dinner within a few blocks other than Subway; one night I ended up walking to the Hilton to eat at their hotel bar. Overall if you need a nice, clean hotel room to just lay your head, for the price I think I would stay again. If I was attending another conference again where the stay was long in duration I would pay the extra price to stay at one of the other bigger hotels.

1920's Charm, Modern Luxury

What a great stay! This is what a boutique hotel is all about. They had just re-opened after being closed for years of obviously pain-staking renovation. It's like stepping back into a 1920's luxury hotel. But, it still has wifi, modern baths and all the "clean" comforts of today. The rooms are large and quiet and very clean. The restaurant and lobbies were gorgeous with original fixtures and ceilings! Lot's of restaurants, museums, riverwalk park just a few blocks away.
