Location Location Location
2-star hotel with 5-star location. We didn't have a view, the room was very um plain & a bit dingy. HOWEVER, location is everything there, & we were able to bring our well behaved doggy for a low fee & enjoy a wonderful time with our car safely parked for a low fee. The management was accommodating, though the night manager seemed to want a tip whenever we asked for anything special. The town is a bit tip crazy. Ask for a room with a view. We will next time for sure. There are a few rooms with a spectacular view of the harbor. If you think Flagler ruined Florida, you might want to avoid most tours as the locals see him as an extreme hero.

Short walk from hotel
Visit the fort if nothing else. Then walk across the street to the Pirate Museum. This is a very high-class, historical, fun museum transplanted from its original home in Key West. It's as good if not better now, though the store is a bit small & cheesy compared to its Key West origination. Other touristy stuff is exactly that - touristy. Stay away from the so-called History Museum by the Old Jail. It's very blah. Take a cruise on one of the tourist ships - we went on the Black Raven. Fun.

Great Location!
The best part about this hotel was the fabulous location. It is right across from the bay and Castillo de San Marcos and within walking distance of just about anything you might want to see in the city. The beds were pretty comfortable and the linens were clean. However, the bathroom floor was dirty, which was pretty gross, and the pool was being emptied, so no swimming. I would recommend this hotel if you're visiting for the beautiful sites and don't want to splurge on the Hilton. Also, you might want to do a once over on the bathroom and make sure it's clean before staying in the room.

Not a 5 star hotel
The staff was very friendly. First thing we noticed was the parking. Very, very tight. Check-in wasn't until 3, so we parked, paid our $ for parking. Yes, I said $ for parking. I have to say that this is the first time I have ever had to pay a hotel for parking. Then we walked around the historic district of St. Augustine for about an hour or so. Came back and our room was ready. The front desk clerk was very helpful and friendly. We were able to check in at 12:30. The room was clean. One of the things that we noticed was a very musty smell. It seemed to come from the AC unit. However, after being in the room for a few minutes, the smell seemed to disappear. The TV was very old and the speakers were horrible. Very hard to understand some of the channels...sound was distorted and crackling. The furniture was old and could stand to be replaced. The chair cushions were stained. On the positive side, the bed linens looked to be extremely clean and almost new. The beds were very comfortable and we had a great night's sleep after traipsing around town all evening. Whether or not we will stay there again is up in the air. The location is great, but the accomodations are a little overpriced for the condition that the furniture, TV and AC unit was in.

Dissapponted traveler
If it sounds too good to be true . . .
I was dissappointed that the hotel room was so "stained" and dated. I was surprised to have to pay to park my car at the motel. $7 a day was too much.

Fireworks Family
Location, location
We stayed at the Monterey Inn on the 4th of July because it's right across from where ST. Augustine shoots off fireworks. Instead of fighting traffic to get home, we walked across the street and crawled into bed. The rooms are small and could use some updating (pink and gray bathroom), but it was clean and you couldn't ask for a better location. We even made reservations for next year!
