Conveniently located

We just returned from a 6 night stay at Portofino Bay Hotel. The hotel has two wings (East and West wings). We saw families with dogs staying at the hotel. It's my understanding pets are allowed in the East wing. The West wing is more conveniently located as it is closer to the water taxi that takes hotel guests to Universal City Walk and the Universal theme parks. There are also buses that take you to Wet N Wild, Aquatica, and Sea World from the hotel. The Universal Studios transportation system was very convenient. Our room was on the first floor. The room was relatively large with a large bathroom. We liked staying on the first floor, except for the inconsiderate neighbors who banged their doors in the late evening. There are various shops (including a Universal Studios shop and shops selling resort wear), a Starbucks, a gelato place (yummy!), and a range of restaurants (most of which were pricey) for those who want to dine and shop at the hotel. We were wiped out by early afternoon because of the heat and humidity so it was nice to be able to get back to the hotel and have dinner. The pros of staying at this hotel are: large room and bathroom, convenient location, Universal Studios transportation system, early morning entry into Harry Potter world at both theme parks, and Express Pass. We found the Express Pass especially helpful as we avoided long waits in the lines in the hot and humid days (which was everyday we were in Orlando). The cons are: the hotel charges for an in room refrigerator (I could not believe a hotel of this class charges extra to have a fridge!). There is no microwave in the room. Inconsiderate guests.

Week at Portofino Bay, Club Level

This was our second stay at the PBH. There were 5 adults (parents and college-age children), and we stayed in a deluxe club level room. We ran into some problems rights away, because although we had pre-paid for 5 adults and the need for a rollaway bed was noted on our reservation and requested again at check-in, there were only towels and washcloths for 3 people and no extra bed. It took multiple phone calls to finally get the bed (and extra towels) at 11:00 p.m. The next day we went to Universal Studios and none of our room keys worked for charging, which was a hassle. When we got back our room had not been cleaned, and we learned that you must put the sign on the doorknob or the maid will not enter the room. After we did that the room was cleaned about 8:00 p.m. I was feeling pretty frustrated by then, as I expect better from a 5 star hotel, so I told our concierge, Earl, that we were having problems and he apologized and sent a basket of goodies to our room, which was a nice gesture. Things improved after that, although the maid service was still erratic and a little strange - we requested an extra blanket for the spare bed, and they brought one but took it away the next day! The hotel itself is beautiful, we enjoyed the lovely pools and bocce court, and the walk to the parks is lovely and convenient. The hotel is nice and quiet and the concierge staff is extremely accommodating. We enjoyed having access to the club lounge for breakfast and drinks and it was not overcrowded or hectic in spite of it being a busy week. The free wifi signal is abysmal, it worked less than half the time, although you can pay for an upgraded package if you wish. All in all we enjoyed our week there and would go back.

Awesome family trip

Aside from some room cleanliness issues that were not resolved (and to be fair, we stopped letting housekeeping in after the second day) everything was great. Customer service was fantastic. This is not a budget stay, but it's location and boat access to the park, along with great pool, friendly staff, and express pass made it worth it for our trip.

great universal location

This was our third time staying at this hotel. Very nice! Its a little pricey but worth it, especially since you can skip the lines at universal Orlando. Hotel is very clean and constantly updating. Standard rooms are very large with a large bathroom. Beds are comfy. Spent afternoons at pool. Decent size. Food and drinks are good by the pool, reasonably priced. Lifeguards are pretty strict. Don't allow much to go on in pool. No Nerf balls or anything, just inflatable pool balls. That's a bummer for boys. Nightly entertainment at hotel. Great food at mama Della's. Can't say enough about this hotel! Will definitely stay here again.

A wonderful place to go

Beautiful hotel, super convenient water taxi, very nice staffs in front counter and very friendly staffs at dinning area but the room service wasn't professional. They replaced the towel for bathroom mat. All others are perfect.

Great hotel for a Univeral Studios trip

Pros: Fantastic pool with amazing water slide Super nice, helpful, and friendly staff Water taxi is very convenient Express pass is a real time saver and a great perk Beds are very comfortable Very quiet for a family hotel - room location was far from the lobby, but we prefer the quiet and don't mind a longer walk Great TV in the room, includes HBO Club level breakfast with pastries, cereals, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, fruit, and coffee is very convenient at 7am for an 8am early entry Cons: Unnecessarily tiny shower in a very large bathroom Poor/gross hot appetizer choices in the club lounge half the nights Rooms are a bit dated looking Hotel is a bit pricey, probably won't do club level again

Great time at Portofino Bay

Our family of five stayed here for 6 days. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and you are reminded of being in Italy. The outside piazza area is beautiful with restaurants and shops. The pools are beautiful and well maintained. The food at the restaurants is delicious, albeit pricy. The location is great and the ferry service is both convenient and quick. You can't beat the express passes to the park you get when staying on the hotel property and early hour into the park. We stayed at the club level. It was great. We took full advantage. Only criticism is that other resorts have offered more for the evening hors' doerves. This left us hungry and some nights we didn't want to venture out to a restaurant. Breakfast was great. The room was a nice size but a bit small for five people. Our room would not lock at first but the problem was resolved quickly. Only issue I would mention was inconsistent poolside food and drink service. When the pool was crowded service was very slow. Also, your dirty dishes and used glasses would remain and never be cleaned up. Overall, it's a beautiful hotel and we had a great time.

Second Visit

This was my second visit to the Portofino Bay Resort at Universal Orlando. I fell in love with it during my first stay last fall. The rooms and bathrooms are very spacious and comfortable. The kids love the Beach Pool with slide. My first stay was during a low crowds time at the resort and the second stay was during the busy Easter weekend, but both times the resort was quiet and peaceful. This resort has converted me from a loyal Disney fan to a loyal Universal Orlando fan! Unlike Disney, Universal provides a true 5 star experience when charging 5 star prices. The only complaint I have is that more lounge chairs are needed at the Beach Pool for busy times.

I would love to go back!

I love the place. I booked the hotel for 3 nights, but had a little accident on the way so ended up getting there early morning of my first day, just to find out they upgraded me to the Bay view room (I booked the garden view). I called the hotel beforehand and told them I would be getting there late, but when I checked in, it looked like they already gave my room to someone... luckily they gave me this another room. I would have not been a happy camper if they had me wait for a room at that state....so....I would say I was happy. The room was great, nice view, big bathroom and THE BED! I was in love with the bed. We got a king bed and it was super comfy, especially after long hours at the park. We never made it to early admission...our lost...but the bed was way too comfy for us to part way with it too early.... We spent most of our time in the parks so we didn't really get to use much of the hotel facilities. I couldn't even find the pool, not that I tried very hard. I guess it was far from where I was. We stayed in the West wing (as I requested) which is right by the water taxi. So if you want to have an easy access to that, don't forget to make the request. Our room was also the farthest from the elevator, which is good for a little sound-proofing since the wall IS thin like other reviewers have stated, but if you don't like walking a loooong way to your room, maybe request for a room a little closer. Last but not least, we did one dinner at Mama Della's, a restaurant in the hotel, and it was AWESOME. Great food, EXCEPTIONAL service. Our waiter was sooo good, we felt so special. The food was good as well, despite being so full from all the butterbeer, we still enjoyed the food and we both agreed that Mama Della's is gonna be a place we have to revisit when we go back to Orlando.
