Stylish South Beach hotel with free happy hour and bustling nightlife

When in South Beach, lounge, dine and cocktail like the locals. The nightlife sizzles at the Catalina Hotel and Beach Club, thanks to two rooftop pools, three bars and two restaurants, including the people-watching hub Maxine's. The Catalina celebrates its boutique style with bold design elements such as stark white seating and linens and sumptuous red walls and lamps. Poolside beds reflect South Beach's quintessential luxurious approach to everyday living.

Highlights
  • Two rooftop pools, three bars and two restaurants, including South Beach favorite Maxine's
  • Free shuttle from Miami International Airport
  • Free happy hour from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Rooms

Who says white has to be boring? The hue makes a dramatic statement when paired with red walls or damask-print. Floor-to-ceiling curtains lend softness to the rooms, where Tempur-pedic mattresses, 300-count Belgian sheets and goose down comforters are standard amenities. Space isn't an issue. Each room holds enough square footage to accommodate an in-house masseuse.

Features

The hotel hands out VIP passes to the hottest clubs, but the property is a nightlife magnet on its own. Visitors can sample sashimi in Kung-Fu Kitchen & Sushi or mingle with other singles at the rooftop pool. Go ahead: Order a cocktail from the cabana bed.

When it's time to catch a flight home, guests can cut their travel time via the free airport shuttle. An in-house system also enables visitors to modify, buy and confirm their flights from the hotel lobby.

Dining

Maxine Restaurant & Bar
The Maxine Restaurant at The Catalina Hotel & Beach Club is open and serves breakfast all day long! The Challah bread French toast is already known to be the best on South Beach. Located in our North building the restaurant, caf, and bar is a great place to people watch while enjoying cocktails and delicious treats.
Kung Fu Sushi
Kung Fu Sushi is an eclectic mix of sushi and Asian food with a real kick. The menu ranges from Seabass to Japanese Red Snapper Rolls, and you'll definitely want to cleanse the palate with signature sake cocktails like the Tokyo Rose or Japanese Jade. The delicious and affordable fare is served amidst dcor that is just as impressive. Partnering with famed artist Lebo to showcase his work, this sexy mod-Asian bistro will offer a complete experience for your senses. As the choice of unique establishments offered becomes increasingly limited in Miami Beach, travelers can continue to rely on the South Beach Group as the source for lifestyle hotels and restaurants that are always original and interesting.

Great time!

Great hotel for the price! Staff was very polite and helpful with everything. Received a nice upgraded room in the 'Maxine building'. The amenities are worth the reservation: FREE airport shuttle, beach chairs and towels, etc.. (the free drink special wasn't that great-only well liquor/cola; no beer or wine, etc) Rooftop pool very relaxing with cabanas. Nice restaurants (we ate at both) The Asian restaurant has a great happy hour for drinks and food. On the North end of night life so a little walking is involved depending on where you want to go. Only complaint: our room looked over the pool and at 7:00AM a worker ran a blower for an hour or so (could have used the extra rest : ) Overall: very pleasurable, historic old hotel (with updated rooms) but that makes South Beach interesting!

Short walk to liquor/drug store. Get drinks and snacks for the room as they are very expensive at the pool/bar etc...

the good, the bad, and the ugly

went there for New Years the good...comfortable beds, great shower pressure, the concierge was able to get us a baby sitter for News Years Eve, the roof top pool water was warm the bad...smelly halls and room, not on the beach (a block away) the ugly...no place to put your clothes away, small rooms, even though it was in the Dorsett(suppose to be the luxury rooms), the baby sitter was $35,00/hr., took over 1/2 hr. to get our breakfast at Maxines every time, no premium cable channels, reserved a bed on the roof top pool for New Years eve party($1200.00) and could not see the fireworks, two small bottles of water was $10.00, all seven of us got sick(something in the water or food). This is not a four star hotel and I've been to many hotels.

Mixed Eprience

The Catalina is a 3 building property and we stayed in the Maxine building. The property was described as a "4 star Property" by the Orbitz representative but we would struggle to give it two stars. I realize that we purchased a package, but the rooms were unappealing, with chipped and peeling paint, unfinished drywall, windows that could not be opened, and only 2 electrical outlets. The bathroom ammenities consisted of a generic low-end thin bar of soap & a paper packet of shampoo. Hallways were dark and reeked of pesticides. The staff was exceptionally pleasant and accomodating.

Catalina Hotel, Miami Beach

Hotel walls are thin, neighboring rooms were noisy Rooms are out of style and need upgrades Free drinks btwn 7-8pm didn't include Scotch.....cost me $30 Could do with free coffee or maybe reduced cost of Starbucks which is located in the lobby Good location, nice pools, decent food but not great Local bus service can get you anywhere you want to go ie Jungle Island Park or Arsht Center, etc.....safe and inexpensive in comparison to cabs or renting car and paying parking fees

Not a 4 star hotel, don't stay here!

This hotel is awful and I have no idea how it can be regarded to anyone as a 4 star property. The hotel is very small and is on a small lot that does not even have a driveway. Rooms are super small and the shower and bathroom are super small. I was traveling alone and felt like I needed more space. Reasons not to stay at Catalina: 1. Rooms smell like mildew. 2. A/C units are very loud and will wake you up throughout the night. 3. Walls are paper thin and you will hear every sound, every door in the hallway slam, and noises from other rooms. 4. Dark rooms with only a few small lamps with 25 watt bulbs. A dark room hides a lot of rough edges in the room where maintenance is lacking.

Catalina

The hotel was a bit older than what I'm used to.Bright paint slapped on walls.Nice fixtures.Bed was like a giant pillow on a raft!No HBO or Showtime.Too many incidentals in room and refrigerator. No room to place my own drinks.I was charged resort fees at the end of my stay.Would have preferred to stay at the Ritz Carlton. That would have been a real resort.Way too many fees!!!Service fees etc.
