Art Deco boutique hotel near South Beach clubs, shops and restaurants

Original 1936 Vitrolite panels light the entrance to this Art Deco jewel in the heart of South Beach. The 42-room hotel is more minimalist than its flashier competitors and has been restored to its initial splendor. The expansive lobby has a tiled floor and dramatic lighting reminiscent of Hollywood glamour. Inside, rooms favor the less-is-more approach. Expect lots of white -- Miami Beach's signature color --sleek furniture and Roman shades.

Staff was very helpful and friendly

Staff was very friendly and helpful. Astor is in a great location, but in a sketchy area. Price was high for what we paid for, price did not equal expectation.

Mixed bag

Good points; friendly, helpful but small staff, comfortable bed, room I ended up in was clean, and the lobby was small but attractive if you like art deco. Bad points: My first room after I found it (on the landing with the fire stairs) was dirty and the bed unmade. It was claustrophobic, like the elevator. The nice man at the desk moved me to a larger room promptly. The exterior is a bit worn and the floors in the hallways and rooms are cheap wood. The fit and finish is all spartan, cold and cheap. No parking except on street with meters and the breakfast isn't served until 7 A.M so I missed it. Finally, they hit my credit card for $ 17.00 the day after I checked out even though I prepaid through [...] and charged nothing during my stay. Note, the hotel website has no number or e-mail contact info. Wonder why. Look further.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

Joe's Stone Crab at 11 Washington St. They don't take reservations but the place is big and the wait rarely exceeds an hour. Always packed and the bar is full of those on the waiting list. Get the stone crab claws and hash brown potatoes (trust me, you've never had anything like these) There are some other "joe's" around so don't get them confused.

Astor Hotel Spring Break 2010

The hotel was fine. I was a little put off by the resort fee that was charged to us daily when we left at 6am on a Friday morning. We obviously didn't use the beach towels that day. The internet also said it included an umbrella which they didn't have. They also ran out of chairs and towels pretty early in the morning, but we were still charged a fee! The rooms are minimalist, and when it came to check in and the room was not available, no apologies, it was pretty much our problem.

The not Astor Hotel...

My wife and I were booked to stay in the Astor Hotel (called and confirmed the night before), when we flew into Miami we found out that a few of the rooms had significant water damage from plumbing during the night. Unfortunately, we were booked for one of the rooms that had damage and were diverted to a sister hotel down the road. Astor did a great job of ensuring we got a room asap at The Clinton Hotel. The room was great and the restaurant next door had fantastic breakfast food. The only downside was the super slow elevator and dark and musty hallways (creepy!).

Reminded me of my college dorm room.

Loved the external decor and the lobby of the hotel but the room itself reminded me of my dorm room. Nothing special about it that a college student couldn't put together.

Good clean hotel

Hotel was just "nice" - neat, clean, with a friendly, responsive staff but definitely no frills. The best things about the hotel are the location and the restaurant (although we didn't try it, the restaurant got raves and was always filled). The furnishings were very standard. Still, it was all we were looking for -- a simple, clean place to rest in after taking in South Beach. It was definitely worth exactly what we paid for it -- no more and no less.

Eh, nice but I've seen better before

Our initial overall impression of the hotel was positive, but there were aspects that we didn't like at all. The concierge was very nice and helpful, but the rest of the staff didn't seem to care or realize that part of their job is to actually be nice to guests. We were given attitude more times than I can count. The room was very clean, and the stereo with the wine glasses was a nice touch. Would've been nice to have face towels but that's certainly not a deal breaker. The restaurant attached to the hotel has fabulous food and, for those who don't have the luxury of living in tropical places, an incredibly cool and comfortable outdoor seating area. The waiter was friendly enough but it took three times asking and over 30 minutes to get our check so we could leave. Very, very expensive also. A ceviche and two drinks (not including two that were complimentary) cost us $50! Location is great. Two blocks away from the beach but in a really busy area. So you essentially get the essence of being on the main drag without having to pay main-drag prices. One note of caution: the restaurant has a band on Thursday nights, and they use speakers that make it impossible to hear conversation. We had a room on the first floor, just down the hall, and couldn't sleep before midnight because that's how late the band played. If we hadn't needed to be up early that wouldn't have been a problem, but when we talked to the front desk about it, we were treated with indifference. I would recommend this place to a friend with all of the above caveats. We certainly could have done much worse for the price, so overall I'd say it was an alright experience.

nice place to stay

The hotel is nice and central. The staff is very educated and forward coming, and the room was clean. Only things you should pay attention is, that the shuttle doesn't work on tuesdays and wednesdays (city buses go to the airport) and that the charge you an extra 15 USD for using the hotel amenities.

The Astor Hotel in South Beach

We were there at the Astor for two nights before we embarked on our cruise. We booked the hotel via [...]and was expecting 3.5 star accommodation with free Wifi which everyone needs these days. when we got there, we were shocked that our room was in the stairwell (yes you need to walk through the regular hallway, through the exit into the stairwell, and thats where you would see our unit's door). Secondly the room was tiny and there was no wifi (obviously since the apartment is in the stairwell). The faucet handle fell off when i touched it, similarly all the light fixtures were literally falling off/or broken and the front door handle to the hotel is broken. The good part for us was when we went to complain about the room and that it was not what we would expect from a 3.5 star hotel, the manager promptly changed our room and it was much bigger and wifi worked - but we lost almost two hours of our precious vacation time during this commotion. They did not give me any hassles at all which was good. In my opinion, this hotel is a 3 star if you don't get the room in the stairwell, very clean, and can easily become 3.5 stars with a little attention to the maintaining of the fixtures.

Ok but not great

We arrived earlier than expected and the staff accommodated us by letting us watch the World Cup game in their closed bar. Our room was ready an hour early and we were allowed in. Staff was very nice and friendly. Needed more mirrors in the room. The restaurant was closed indefinitely they said but was advertised as being open. Would have been nice to know that.
