A return to tradition at a casual Fort Lauderdale beach resort

A roomy veranda with rocking chairs signifies the casual appeal of Pelican Grand Beach Resort, a family-friendly hotel right on the oceanfront. Visitors enjoy watching time go by in the zero entry pool, lazy river and choosing their favorite ice cream flavors at the parlor. For fine dining with water views, the standard is North Ocean Grille. Rooms lean toward the traditional, with iron bed posts, crown molding and bright pastels.

Highlights
  • Spacious rooms, some with ocean or Intracoastal Waterway views
  • Zero entry pool and lazy river
  • Old-fashioned ice cream parlor
  • Veranda with rocking chairs
  • North Ocean Grille for all-day waterfront dining
Rooms

Pastels (canary yellow, lilac and various shades of blue) spread cheer in traditional rooms, suites and penthouses at Pelican Grand Beach Resort. Depending on the layout, the room might have a balcony with a view of the Intracoastal Waterway or Atlantic Ocean. Look for traditional touches like crown molding, heavy armoires doubling as TV cabinets and iron bed frames. Every room has a mini refrigerator, microwave, high-speed Internet access, movies, games and music.

Dining

Pelican Grand Beach Resort whips up a meal for every occasion. Grab breakfast, lunch or dinner by the water at North Ocean Grille and finish with a sweet treat at The Emporium, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor.

Recreation

A zero entry pool overlooks a horizon graced by palm trees and those signature South Florida sunsets at Pelican Grand Beach Resort. There, guests can either take a leisurely cruise aboard an inner tube on the lazy river or rest on poolside cabanas with their favorite tropical drink from Poolside, an alfresco lounge. Beach attendants and servers tend to sunbathers' every need.

Nice Beach

Rooms were very nice, but felt it was a bit to pricey for just a place to sleep and a view of the street. They could use help with the staff as it was very slow when ordering food and cab services.

At times it was like Paradise.

With the exception of one beach assistant (who appeared not too happy to be working that morning) and not very friendly, it was a wonderful trip! A little pricey.

Pelican Grand

Although I'd been by this location many times, it was far more impressive as a guest. The location is terrific: right on the (disappearing Fort Lauderdale) beach in a quieter part of FLL just at the end of the public zone. The hotel appears to have been recently reconditioned, but it has many of the hallmarks of an early 20th century hotel. The large seaside veranda, where meals are served, is particularly attractive and a rare facility in FLL, where most of the lodging is off the beach. Our room was a large and comfortable corner room looking west. The furnishings are ok. Not quite enough storage space (dressers). Definitely not trying to be ultramodern. The staff was very polite and helpful. Valet parking is the only option: $30/day but efficient. Breakfast and dinner on the veranda were both well prepared and served. In the 25+ years we've been coming to Lauderdale, this spot was the best, and we'll be back.

Just average

We arrived at the hotel early - at 9 AM - because we had just got off our cruise. Check-in wasn't until 3 PM. While I understand the staff's desire to keep company policy, I think it would have been a nice gesture if they had checked us in a bit earlier instead of having us wait for 6 hours. The room was spacious and reasonably clean, although I saw some small cobwebs on the ceiling. The furniture looked a bit worn and the decor was not very appealing. On the whole, I don't think the hotel provides good value for one's money, and I would not recommend it.

In general, you need a car/taxi to get around Ft Lauderdale, so budget ahead.

Great Experience!

My party of 7 arrived early from our week vacation on a cruise. The Resort staff accommodated us until we were able to check into the room. From the front desk, the dining area, the beach, the pool and the bar everyone greeted us with smiles and courteous attention. Wish we were able to stay longer. Definately will visit again.

Real beachfront

The hotel really is beachfront, i.e. no street to cross to get to the beach. We loved walking down the steps onto the sand. We had a beachfront 1 bed suite which was very spacious and comfortable. My son loved the pool and lazy river. After a day, my husband and I were hooked, too. We will definitely stay here again.

One bad experience, otherwise decent value

The Lazy River, Beach Attendants, and Pool Attendants were great. The restaurants were so-so. We had a horrible experience at the casual restaurant waiting forever for appetizers AND THEN waiting, while other people were being served, for plates and silverware to eat the appetizers. After repeatedly calling the waitress, we ended up leaving only paying for one round of drinks which still came up to almost $50 (only three people). The service was great at the main restaurant but the food was average. Nice hotel, but it could definitely use additional ammenities.
