European hostel-style, Clean and Friendly

We stay here when we go to shows at the 9:30 club - it's so close and convenient. The concierge who checked us in was great - gave us suggestions about which floor of the club to eat/drink on, where to get good coffee. Neither fancy nor loaded with amenities, but a good value, simple, clean place to stay. The heater for the room was a pain though - it was always either too hot or too cold, couldn't seem to reach a good constant temperature. Cute "hotel cat" that seems to live in the lobby.

A Major Disappointment

When we arrived at the Windsor, we were informed that they didn't have a room for us, due to flooding of 4 rooms. We were told, "Not to worry, we will send you to our sister hotel, The District". Located at 1440 Rhode Island Avenue Northwest in DC, we were transported to a very old, dirty, non-working elevator, rude staff establishment. The old AC units were on the fire escape, there were scortch marks on the wall from past electrical shortages, the windows were plastic but we got great exercise hauling our luggage up 3 flights. I'm not sure that there is a rating for this place and we really felt like the whole ordeal was a sucessful bait n switch on the part of the Windsor. Our advise, pay the extra money and stay at a National Chain that has a reputation to support.

Terrible hotel, notoriously overpriced

The hotel is awful, overpriced, and there is nothing I can recommend about it. For 150 $ they put me in a room in the basement, next to their storage rooms, laundry, and junk. It was feeling filthy. I travel a lot, I have been to many countries and hotel types, this is not a European hotel as they want to present themselves. First, European hotels in this class are cheap - no more than 50 EUR. Second, even they are clean, welcoming, and neat. For 150 $ in Europe one stays in real 3 star hotels. On top of all this filthy experience, my reservation was for three nights, I left the third day early morning and came back to find all my luggage taken out of the room because they thought I was for two nights. After heavily complaining, they finally put me in their better rooms, on the first floor that at least was not filthy as the one in the basement. Finally, if you think at least their location is good, think again. They are about 10 min. walk from the Dupont Circle metro station which is good but not if it rains and you are with luggage. At 5:30 am, when I had to leave, it was raining heavily, and I was with suitcases. I was stunned to find that calling a taxi was impossible (no taxi will take you for this small distance). So, as the cherry on the cream, I had to walk at 5:30 am dragging suitcases to the Metro station under the heavy rain. Come to think of it, I almost reserved Hilton Washington for 150$, except that one night was not available!

A total disaster! ![*]

The Windsor was full and sent me to another hotel (Embassy) that also had no rooms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!They then sent me to the District, clearly an old SRO trying to be more than a fleabag hotel and barely succeeding. I was totally aggravated but it was 10 at night by the time I got there and I was exhausted. I also barely slept fearing there were bedbugs in the room!!![...] The whole ordeal also took an hour of my time and it was 90+ degrees out.

Windsor Inn

We really enjoyed this Inn. It's a very nice bed and breakfast. The staff were friendly, and the beds were comfortable. The room we had was on the small side, but it was roomy enough for both of us. The area is a very nice neighborhood fairly close to Dupont Circle and very close to the U Street Corridor. A bus that went right down to the monuments and museums stopped less than a block away. We'd definitely stay there again.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

There are several excellent restaurants (especially Nora's and Hank's Oyster Bar) as well as bookstores (Kramerbooks and Second Story) within easy walking distance.
