loud and not very restful

Do not stay in room 122. It has a very loud, clanging fan noise which made it extremely difficult to sleep. It was next to the entrance, the stairs, and the elevator, making it subject to all the noises of much coming and going. The entrance seemed to be the place to gather for extended socializing and a great deal of noisey activity.

Good location, poor upkeep

Negatives: The hot water in the shower didn't work at certain times of the day. The hotel had a run-down appearance (particularly the carpet). The internet connection was extremely slow (dial-up speed). The breakfast buffet was unnappealing; I took one look at it before going to the CVS next door and buying breakfast food. Bath drain was clogged on arrival and had to be fixed. Positives: Kitchenette in room, comfortable beds, great location.

Great location

Walkable to area attractions. Metro stop close by. Wholefoods 3 blocks away. Hotel has 2 entrances which is confusing ..Prefer the F street entrance and tower for safety and convienence. Staff very nice. Room is confortable and clean. Could use new carpet and drapes. Bathroom is 1940-50's vintage looking but spotless as is the kitchen.

Location and price make up for short falls

Great foggy bottom location. Less than 5 blocks from the White House and there's a Wholefoods 3 blocks away so that you're not committed to downtown food prices if you don't want to spend that kind of money. I was not happy with the fitness room - equipment was out of date, not working and weights were missing. No laundry facilities which is a must for hotels offering suites with kitchens. Staff were very friendly.

State Plaza Hotel

The hotel was fine. Nothing horrible happened and it was located near where I wanted to be. Additionally, it's right next to a liquor store and a CVS. Super convenient. It also had a kitchen, which was weird but possibly useful. A couple of things, though. For some reason, both elevators smelled horrible. One smelled like bum pee and the other like dried fish. We found ourselves hoping to get the bum pee elevator. Also, the sink was VERY slow to drain; even worse than my broken sink at home. It probably took 5 full minutes to drain after brushing my teeth. Gross. Lastly, the toilet had a weak flush. I imagined if anyone really had to do something horrible to that toilet, it couldn't take it. Luckily, we were only there for one day.

State Plaza Hotel

I have stayed at this hotel one additional time in the past. The employees are very kind and attentive, rooms and facilities are clean. Unfortunately the restaurant was extremely overpriced - they charged me an 18% gratuity for a buffet. Don't eat there. Nearby there is a great pub called Tonic with terrific food.

Review of State Plaza Hotel

I stayed there for a rally on the Mall. It was .6 miles from Lincoln Memorial. The hotel was booked, but the restaurant was closed for the weekend ... something that I did not know before I arrived. The nearest place to eat was a bar/hamburger joint 3 blocks away. Two of the three lamps in the bedroom were not working. Other than that, the suite was large, clean, and nice.

Convenient location

The hotel is divided into two buildings with separate entrances. It must have been apartments at one time, because there's a complete kitchen in every hotel room. The downsides: 1) there's no ice or vending machines (anywhere I could find) and 2) I couldn't get room service from an understaffed restaurant. At breakfast, there was only a buffet, because of too little staffing, instead of the full menu option that should have been there. Not that the food was less than attractive and great-tasting, but they don't have good restaurant management. I didn't like the buffet's automatic 18% PLUS $2.50 service charge gratuities for (basically) no service. So many alchohol choices were out-of-stock with no attempt to replace them. The staff answers the phone with, "Room service is not available today." However, it's a great location, EXTREMELY clean rooms, and a reasonable price. I think a family staying for some time might save some money, using the kitchen for meals.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

It's a good 6+ blocks to the subway, but one expects to walk a lot in DC. If you don't mind "hiking", this location is very convenient to many of the major attractions and museums of DC.
