Shining Hotel

Book your Ghost Tour as soon as possible - the only drawback of our stay was that the Ghost Tour was sold out. Loved everything else!

Haunted? Maybe. Historic? Definitely.

The Stanley is Estes Park's premiere hotel -- the ONLY place to stay if you're in the mood for old-world elegance and a 24-hour loop of Stephen King's The Shining. The restaurant/bar is charming as are the public areas of the hotel. The only drawback are the vast numbers of tourists who visit, but do not stay at the hotel. The constant hubbub can be tiring while you're trying to relax. Never fear, though, a quick walk into the mountains behind the hotel will see your troubles melt away into oblivion. Don't forget to watch The Shining while you're there! I'm looking forward to returning when the hedge maze is installed. Ooh, scary!

Quick Getaway

We had always wanted to stay at the Stanley Hotel because of its notoriety. The Ghost tour was fun, and the area is beautiful, but the room was really small and cramped for the price.

Beautiful building, rooms just so so

The building itself is great, beautiful exterior, nice restaurant/bar and very friendly staff. The room we had showed its age though and could use a little love.

Great Exprience

Wonderful Experience, Great views and location. Great Staff. Tip, no air-conditioning... not an issue here as it is always cool and windows are screened. Tip.... if there is wedding, you may want a room that faces the back and forgo the view and parking lot noise. The manor house is $100 less and is "private". and has great porches and common areas..

Spooky Mountain Splurge

We typically go to chain hotels, but since we're Stephen King fans we decided to treat ourselves to a stay at his inspiration for The Shining. We loved the verandah, fireplaces and bar. Their Ghost Tour was booked, so we took the historical tour of the hotel and our guide was happy to add in most of the ghost lore at our request. Our room was extremely comfortable - it didn't have AC, but with the cool nights we just opened our windows and enjoyed the crisp, mountain breeze. We normally flee from hotels to explore and do activities, but we loved the Stanley so much we found ourselves hanging out and leaving Estes Park to the crowds of tourists. Hoping to return in the fall someday!

4th of July Weekend in the Mountains

Stayed at the Condos on the Stanley Hotel grounds. Roomy and comfortable. Condos are privately owned but managed by the Stanley. The owner of condo that we were placed in by the hotel did not want to service the outside jacuzzi, so we could not use it; sad really, it would have been a perfect day and review. The hotel has no control over things like that. Also, a surround sound speaker system was installed, but it looks as though it has never been hooked up to any entertainment appliance, so it was not operational. There were DVD movies in the condo but no DVD player. Overall, the condo was good, but not great.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

Walking through town to get to the AirTram at Estes Park makes for a great excursion and scenic walk.

Stanley Lodge

We stayed at the Stanley Lodge rather than the main building. It too was built around 1910 on a smaller scale. It was quieter than the main building making it seem more appropriate for a visit to the outdoors. The views of the Rockies from the front porch were magnificent. It also provided a wonderful breakfast reminiscent of a good bed and breakfast. The Lodge has been recently refurbished and painted making it very attractive. The Lodge is not air conditioned because of the cool mountain air. This is fine with us, however we felt the Lodge could pay more attention to the ventilation in individual rooms.
