A bit lacking ...
The staff at the front desk appeared to be aloof and didn't seem to care if we were there. Overall, all of the staff in the hotel could have been much more friendly. Housekeeping was excellent and friendly, however. Rooms were quaint, clean, and comfortable, but the walls are very thin. Outdoor pool was nice, but the hot tub was filthy.

Vintage Charm and High Quality Service
We stayed at the Santa Maria Inn for Christmas eve night, since my parents house was all ready bursting with family for the holidays. The lobby was exquisitely decorated for the season, as was the restaurant inside. We were greeted with a pleasant smile and extremely helpful staff. Our room was on the bottom floor, the oldest part of the building. Though it had the feel of old Hollywood glamor, it was not gaudy or over the top. The restaurant was open until 10pm so we stopped in for a late night coffee and desert; it was so delicious and the wait staff very attentive. Though the room was quite antique (older carpeting and drapes) we didn't have much problem with noise from other guests, the environment (heat/cool), and there was a newer mattress on the bed so we were comfortable all night. What was most surprising was the shower the next morning; instantly hot water! We will definitely look into staying here again for any special occasion.

Lovers Get-A-Way
Absolutely wonderful. If you love history as we do it was great going back into time. Dancing to the tunes of the auto play baby grand piano. Sharing a glass of wine with hotel customer's, and wonderful and beautiful bartender "S". The executive suite was great. The staff was awesome. We are sure to come back and visit. Very lovely place Thanks for adding spice to our New Years Get-A-Way Earline & Reginald

A Fun Place to Stay
Our stay at the Santa Maria was a bit of a surprise. We stayed in the older section and as we walked down the hall you got a sense of age, but not in a frumpy, or seedy way, but classy and traditional. The stars on the doors where old time movie stars had actually stayed was fun. Our room was very comfortable and clean, and at the price point downright elegant. We rented two rooms for two couples and we all agreed the beds were wonderfully comfortable and we all slept extremely well. We did not eat in the restaurants, but we did participate in karaoke in the pub. We all had fun and it was a busy and fun loving crowd. Selection of beers was good, and the bartender and wait staff were first class and super friendly. While my wife slept in, I spent the morning with my Starbucks (from their coffee counter) in the lobby reading the paper and watching the staff and guests interact. Everyone was gracious and helpful. I would highly recommend staying here. We'll come back on our next tour to the central coast.

The Chinese restaurant across the street had some of the poorest chinese food we've ever had. Should have had dinner in the hotel.

Must stay in tower.
I have stayed here several times (along with other area hotels) to visit family. The Santa Maria Inn is cheaper than the closer-to-Orcutt hotel by the airport (plus, no airport noise) but you MUST stay in the TOWER. The 'original' set of rooms i have never liked - they are a tad cheaper, but they are also old: tiny, drafty, inconvenient, etc. Last time I was in them they were also in need of an upgrade: uncomfortable beds etc., but it's been a while. This time I purposely put myself and my grandparents in the tower and it was a world of difference. It was quiet (still nothing you can do about people in the hallway/door noise as in any hotel - but there are so few rooms per level, this is very minimal), we faced back (away from Broadway, which really isn't very busy anyhow) so our single planed windows didn't bother us with noise - and the view was fantastic already from the 4th floor (though still mostly of the parking structure, pool and small yard). The tiny heaters actually worked very fast, and the down blankets were warm anyhow, so even with freezing temps outside we only used it for a few minutes one of the 2 nights we stayed. The rooms are rather large in general for any hotel, especially in this price range, with comfy chairs, window seats, 2 vanities, etc. - but one of our rooms was in the corner (a named 'suite') and was very large - something that would be great for a wedding party to be sure - and had even more windows and a lounge chair. The beds I love - my hips and lower back just can't take springs, these beds were stiff foam with a padded top and came with ample pillows in various levels of firmness. I'm still not overly impressed with the staff, but they were nice enough, and the lobby was very pretty - all decked out for Christmas. When I lived in town I used to hang out at the bar, but now it's rather rowdy - and I can't remember the last time I ate at the restaurant (if you stay in the old part you have to walk through it), I just stuck to the lobby and our rooms this time. There was some carpert in the halls starting to get a bit thread bare, and even in our clean bathroom the wall paper was starting to peel - if they update again and (hopefully) add double paned windows, this hotel would be a real winner for the area.

Nightlife tip:
Short walk from hotel
In hotel and directly across the street are 3 places to eat and 2 bars, Shaws (across the street) would be one of the best places for a steak in town and the best bar - which might not be saying too much, but you are in Santa Maria, what are you gonna do? But most of the town will be DEAD during the holidays, FYI. Another bar is North on Broadway and right on Main (so around the Mall) and on your left (north side). Bar & Shopping wise you are close to everything, but the immediate area is next to a high school and kind of a poorer part of town.

Best place for ambiance of old Santa Maria
Overall great. Old world charm in public areas, but the old historic rooms are uneven. Some refurbished to their final state, but ours had an old heater that was inadequate and a bathroom without proper shelf space. But the shower head was fantastic. And the King size bed was super comfortable. Food is very, very good. New tower rooms we viewed are well worth the price, but be careful if you want to stay in the old historic section. Rooms and closets are of different sizes, there is " old hotel smell" in that area, but the gold stars on room doors with engraved names of stars that stayed there, is fun to see and stay in...we were in the room "Joan Crawford".

Santa Maria History
Santa Maria Inn is a little piece of History. It was fun to see the names with stars of old time movie stars that stayed on the doors of the old side of the hotel. the Santa Maria Inn has just renovated the rooms. I thought the furnishings in the rooms were very nice, roomy and clean. It was nice having refrig, microwave and coffee maker in each room. There is not much to do in Santa Maria, but we had to go to a conference there and made the most of it. We drove to Santa Barbara a lot which is only 1 hr and 10 minutes drive.

Shaw's was a great steak house that is a cross the street from the hotel. Also the Magic Dragon chinese food across the street was good and the Pantry for good old american food. They are all together just across the street and probably the best places to eat in Santa Maria. There is also a Home Town Buffet which we enjoyed just a couple miles down the street. We loved going to the Mexican big market down at the end of Broadway for hot fresh bread each day as well.
