Sleeping on a granite slab

Its not the continental breakfast, the pool, the view, the bath amenities that one really desires at a hotel. No, its none of those things. It IS of all things, a good nights sleep. Staying at this hotel in SLO made me realize this. All those other things hardly matter when your bed is as hard as a ROCK and that's exactly what my bed felt like there. I never slept so badly as I did trying to sleep on that god forsaken mattress. My theory is that the owners reserve this type of bed for travelers that purchased their room on the internet, that way if they lose money on the room they can use them as a revolving door for internet reservations, while the premium price paying customers get the good beds, thereby maintaining the return customer base while still filling out the hotel with suckers who use the internet to shop for the cheapest rates. The proof was when I went to complain the attendant made an "attempt" to find me another room but stated "we are booked up" Well, that night the parking lot was half empty. Booked up? Right. At any rate my recommendation is STAY clear of trying to score an inexpensive room at this hotel.

Totally adequate

I chose the Vagabond Inn in SLO because of it's handy location for visiting family. It was near relatives we were visiting and had easy access to the 101 without being too close to be really bothered by noise. It was better than I expected for the price I paid. It was clean and neat and the room was plenty big enough to comfortably fit me, my 2 yr old and 13 yr old nephew. There was ample space for luggage and counter space for toiletries, freeing up the room for being. It was helpful to have a microwave and refrigerator. The pool and spa were nice for entertaining the kids and towels were available at the office. The continental breakfast was okay. There was nothing particularly awesome to write home about, but everything was totally adequate and the price was great. I will definitely stay there again.

needs improvement

I was annoyed when I was asked to produce a credit card for "incidentals" when we had already pre-paid for the stay with [...]. This place does not have room service, so I was left wondering what incidentals? The next morning upon check out, I found out that Vagabond Inn would not release the deposit until "they were paid by [...]!!!" I found that really strange seeing has how my payment [...] had cleared. Additionally, they had computer issues so they could not print; no hot water upon arrival because they had hot water heater issues; and the free continental breakfast consisted of plastic wrapped danishes.

Clean, comfortable and good location

The location is great. It is just off of the freeway but not too close to hear any freeway traffic. It is close to shopping and restaurants - within walking distance. It is just a short drive north on the freeway to Cal Poly and only about 12 miles south to Pismo Beach. We also went to Avila Beach and Kelsey winery all just a short drive. The continental breakfast only had pastries, small muffins, apples, juice and coffee. This could have been better.

Fine for one night

The hotel was easy to find. The rooms looked tidy although dated. The problems I had were the carpets looked very dirty with lots of stains. I suggested to my teenagers to wear their shoes. The toilet wasn't flushing very well and the last time we used it before we checked out it wouldn't flush at all. Which is really embarrasing I tried at least 6-7 times. The front desk was nice enough to allow us to use the office restroom. If it weren't for those two things it would have been a perfect inexpensive room. Staff was great and didn't mind that I pulled in at 11pm. Continental breakfast could use some more items and more choices of fruit.

Vagabond Inn, San Luis Obispo CA

I chose this hotel because it was reasonably close to Amtrak and was also a pick-up location for a Wine Wranger tour I booked for Saturday. It was comfortable and clean, but the bath/shower handle was difficult to operate and the water pressure was low, so the shower flow was weak. The continental breakfast was minimal -- muffins & danish were storebought and cold; had to take it back to my room to microwave. Also, there was very little to see/do within walking distance -- the mall across the street has stores you find everywhere; nothing special to SLO or California.
