Sophisticated urban oasis with sweeping views in SoMa's Museum Row

Formerly known as the Argent, the Westin San Francisco Market Street has been rebranded over the course of the last decade. The result: a sophisticated, urban oasis in the middle of what locals call Museum row, a stretch that includes the Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts and the Contemporary Jewish Museum. Both the lobby and guest rooms are sleek and modern; art in public areas is from Roy Lichtenstein and other iconic artists. Ducca, the on-site restaurant, serves contemporary Northern Italian food and has a lively bar scene on weekends.

Highlights
  • Impressive array of public art by artists such as David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein
  • Within walking distance of Moscone Convention Center
  • Cocktails and Italian cuisine at Ducca, the on-site restaurant
  • Complimentary guided walking tours
Rooms

Accommodations -- 676 rooms, including 24 suites -- feature sweeping city views and floor-to-ceiling windows through which to enjoy them. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets welcome (fees apply).

Features

The Westin San Francisco Market Street abuts a public park that sits between San Francisco's Contemporary Jewish Museum and the Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts. The Moscone Convention Center is within walking distance, as well.

The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four-Diamond Award.

Grab a bite at Ducca, which specializes in Northern Italian cuisine and has a boisterous bar scene on weekend nights.

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

The Westin Way

A last-minute reservation in SFO proved a nice surprise. The room was small but very comfortable, and the clerk was able to find one with a good view as well. The concierge recommended excellent French restaurants nearby and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The only suggestion would be to have a basic continental breakfast (tea/coffee/toast, etc.) included in the room price. This is a European standard, which is sadly lacking in most of US upper-tier hotels. One can always step out to a neighbourhood cafe for breakfast, but that's not the point when one stays at a good hotel like this one.

Had higher expectations

I only stayed in the hotel one night. The S.F. experience is what made it special. Parking sucks and the hotel parking was way expensive - like $50.00 for the night. My in room phone did not work. I'm glad I went through the checkout process, because they had an $26.00 "snack fee" on my tab (I may have slightly touched the snack rack - it's on top of a usable counter); I did not partake in any of their expensive items, nor any drinks. Also in room WiFi was nonexistent. That was an additional approximately $15.00 fee per day. Bottom line, the hotel did not make my stay special.

Upscale attitude but only fair value

Rooms in San Francisco are all expensive, so the Westin is no exception. But while it has an air of being more expensive at the lobby level, the rooms are only average in terms of amenities and comfort. The best features are the floor to ceiling windows offering stunning views of the City; the comfortable linens; and the very quiet and efficient HVAC system. The bathroom and furnishings are nothing special whatsoever. And the ridiculous snack tray can't be moved because it's electronically tethered so you have to stare at a mini-mart on the dresser of your $250+ per night hotel room.
