Better than your average 3-star

This was the best deal I could find in SF, I couldn't believe how expensive every hotel was. This hotel was still a bit more than I wanted to pay for a 3-star, but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The breakfast was included, and though not amazing, was plentiful. The free coffee and tea in the lobby 24/7 was a nice touch, the room and lobby were always clean. The area still has a reputation for being bad, but it was gentrified sgnificantly. There are homeless everywhere in SF, but at no time did I feel unsafe. Tommy's is across the street, with great buffalo chili and other dishes, and De Afghanan, which serves excellent Afghan food, is around the corner. Polk St nearby has plenty of bars and shops. A little out of the way, but all in all I was quite happy with my experience at The Opal and I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a relatively affordable option. and FYI, the free internet connection, as opposed to the one that costs $5, was absolutely fine for all the normal facebooking and email.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Tommy's across the street is an institution with excellent meats and affordable. De Afghanan is around the corner and serves excellent Afghan food. Philz Coffee is excellent for hand brewed coffee with unique flavors and an SF native. Polk St has tons of shops and interesting businesses and bars. The area is not dangerous, despite what some people say (it was maybe 10 or 15 years ago).

Old refurbished charming hotel

Great hotel for the price. Room is on the smaller scale but the bathroom was very nice. Breakfast was chaotic because of overcrowding and limited. The staff was amazing and there was a gym even. The building was built in 1907 which brings tons of charm to the hotel. Location was good but be aware of your surroundings at night, as always in SF.

A Pleasant Stay

This is a nice hotel in a very good location. The room was not spacious, but the bed was very comfortable. Mel's Diner next door has good food and the hotel is in walking distance from many other good restaurants as well as from the opera house where we were headed each night. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well.

The Opal

It was good. The room was good, bigger than expected. Only downside is that there were so few electrical outlets and the walls were thin.

San Fran Adventure

The hotel location of the hotel is the major downside with a large number of homeless people in the area.

Great!

Not fancy but clean and nice rooms, right next door to a theater and diner, and across the street from a cafeteria-style restaurant with an awesome beer selection. Centrally-located in the city so anywhere in SF should just be a short cab ride away.

More than your moneys worth!

This is a great location. Staff was very helpful and professional. Girl at the front desk was awesome, her name is Jeannie (I think). Free breakfast that is more than just simple bagels and coffee. Only downside, hotel is outdated and a bit smelly. Nothing worth complaining. Very satisfied and would come here again!

Great overall value

For a hotel in San Francisco, this is a great value. Once you get over the old feel, it is great because the rooms are updated, fairly large and clean. The staff is very friendly and the hotel has a lot of charm. The continental breakfast is just ok but the eating area is very clean and inviting. I'd stay here again for $100/night.

Anniversary trip

My husband and I were celebrating our 15th anniversary in San Francisco. The Opal was a very good value for the money. It has the feel of a aging hotel, that was once probably high-end. Though it feels a bit older, it was still nicely kept, a good location and was reasonably priced. The price included a continental breakfast, which was not fancy but certainly filled us up! I would recommend to others.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

If it is raining, there is a nice movie theater right next to The Opal. It came in handy for us one day!
