Great value

There are numerous bars, restaurants, banks, bakery's,movie theater, within feet of the front door. The hotel was clean and quiet, there is a baby grand piano in the front area it was nice to hear a talented guest perform one afternoon, The complimentary breakfast was a good value too. The staff was very helpful and professional.I will stay in this hotel again there is nothing really bad to say other than the neighborhood at night is a bit sketchy so just becareful. I walked everynight with a friend and we had no issues but this is not the best neighborhood.

Great Location for the Price

The rooms were quiet and sleeping was uneventful. Great location; walking distance to some entertainment and restaurants, on cable car and bus routes, taxies, etc. Great rates for the room and location.

Affordable but somewhat dissatisfied

The Opal is very close to Fisherman's Wharf which is where we spent most of our time. The hotel itself offers a great price for downtown San Francisco. There are a lot of bums that hang out on the streets in the area though. The rooms are pretty small but very clean. The vending machines didn't have any soda so I had to go to the store or a restaurant to get something to drink (they do put a couple bottles of water in your room though). Mel's diner is downstairs, really good food, open really late. We had a car though and didn't expect to pay $25 a night for parking. It isn't the easiest access for parking. You have to make a u-turn to get into the garage and then you have to get out of your car and push a button for the garage door to open and then hurry to get back in your car before the door closes. Not the best if you have a car. It was pretty easy to catch public transporation. Overall, it wasn't bad but it wouldn't be my first choice if I were to go back.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

A short drive or cab ride away is Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 (for shopping), Alcatraz (a must-see!) great restaurants, and the Golden Gate Bridge. You would be better off taking public transporatation than driving. The parking at Fisherman's Wharf is about $4 an hour, no more than $28 per day.

My review of The Opal

Luckily found this hotel, although not cheap. Parking is a real PROBLEM.

Good location...generally friendly staff

The Opal on Van Ness in San Francisco was, for the most part, a great experience. Room was a little small, but since we were there to do the city, it didn't bother us. Continental breakfast was not that great...would recommend heading to Mel's diner (which is actually attached to the hotel).

Beautiful lobby, room a little small

The Opal is a beautiful hotel. We had a room with a queen bed. The room was a little small. The desk was right next to the bed. The bathroom very large, but also very stark. It only had a shower. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. It was close to the cable car and a variety of restaurants.

The OPAL Hotel Great Value

Very nice old hotel if you want to get away form the usual SF Pier crowds. Close to Civic center opera and ballet. Some nice restaurants within walking distance. It would be nice if this SF would be cleaned up a little by their "finest" in a nice way. Since the pan handling can be a bummer and although they dont appear dangerous they are a real downer all the way to Union Square. One young guy followed us for a block trying to get a handout. Remarkable considering this is a very high rent district. It appears panhandling has become an industry in this area. Best regards...OSi

the opal

the opal hotel. is located on van ness st, a very safe street because 3 blocks down you will find city hall. its an old fashon hotel but with very good acomodations, in front of the hotel crossing the street you will see a place called Tommy's Joint a nice place to stop by, eat and have some drinks. if you want to get to pier 39 just take the bus #47 and for 1.50 each, the end of the line will leave you there. so in conclusion not a very expensive hotel, and very good service.

Pleasant Surprise

Very pleasantly surprised. Hotel is centrally located to everywhere we went. Hotel offered parking with in and out privileges for one daily price. Desk staff was EXCELLENT, very helpful. Rooms were clean and sound proof. Free use of computer room to check in to airlines and get boarding passes. Mel's Diner attached to premises was great and reasonable.

Dining tip: In Hotel

When we used taxi service instead of our car everything was within $10 taxi ride for three of us. Great location.
