Great Place and not expensive either!
We stayed in the Junior Suite which was perfect for our family of 4. It had two queen beds (which is hard to find in SF) and a queen sofa sleeper in a small sitting area and a large walk in closet!. Lots of room!!!!! As others have said, it is an older hotel so don't expect modern furniture or TV, but TV reception was great. Reason I left a 4 star for cleanliness was because the pillows were sub-par on comfort and they appeared old. The pillow cases were clean though so not to worry! And the blanket in the sofa sleeper was a bit gross, so we didn't use it. The continental breakfast was great! Yogurt, bagels, toast, fruit, mufifins, hot chocolate and good coffee!.

A Great Place to Stay
We were very impressed with all aspects of this hotel. Its old 1908 charm made it an out of the ordinary place to stay and a great value. Its upkeep was impecible. We stayed in a 2 room suite which was roomy and comfortable. There was a large walk-in closet which easily accomodated all of our suitcases. The room was very clean and neat. The staff was wonderful and more than willing to answer any of our questions. There was a daily continental breakfast. (The coffee was great!) On Wednesday evening, a nice gentleman served wine and cheese in the main lobby as a perk for staying at this hotel. There is a 50s diner right next door; reasonably priced, a good place to eat and fun! Our only complaint was the hotel location to Union Square. The bus stop was right on the block and the cable car stop about 6 blocks away. Once we learned the transportation system in San Francisco, it really wasn't a problem. We would certainly stay here again.

Learn and utilize the bus system. It is much faster than the cable cars and much more convenient to the hotel. Also, purchase the 3 or 7 day transportation pass rather than buying single rides on bus, Muni or cable car. This will save you lots of money.

Helpful Staff
The staff was extremely helpful. Upon checkin, our room was upgraded without any request. One downside is the location. We were somewhat nervous walking to union square. Overall, it was a nice experience and we would stay here again for the price.

Close to the city
Compared to other options just outside of San Francisco, this is much closer and is very nice. Situated in a somewhat ghetto neighborhood, there is ideal security to the building and the decor was rather elegant. Parking costs a fortune and is very minimal, but definitely worth the price.

Great Customer Service
Upon arrival when the Hotel Saw we had small children with us, they tried to move us to a non-smoking room. There were none availiable. So the young lady helping us instead gave us Free parking for our stay. She was very helpful and my Grand Children loved the Hotel. Yes we would definitely stay here again.

good location and excellent value
Our experience at the Opal was excellent. The staff let us do an early check-in and also held a key at the desk for another member of our party. The hotel has a Max's diner downstairs, which is open very late, and a movie theater next door, as well as several bus lines just outside. The rooms were small, but comfortable, and very quiet with attractive furnishings. We will absolutely stay there again.

Neat Old Building in transitioning area of SF
I love older buildings. It's a neat old building with a nice lounge/lobby area. It has neat light well stained glass windows in the stairways. You don't see that sort of thing in the new, bland, box buildings. The staff was nice and a pretty, French concierge added a sense of foreign sophistication. The room had 10-12 inch base board moulding, again something from the past you don't see much. The bathroom, was clean with tile instead of plexiglass, a desk with modem hook up, wardrobe etc.. The carpet was a little worn, couple large water stains, but overall the room was pleasant and nice. The neighborhood was fine, not the best part of town, but by SF standards nowhere near the worst. There was a beautiful old theatre a few doors down currently occupied by the AMC. Walk about 4-5 blocks west and there's some good restaurants in what feels like a transitional neighborhood, ie, young, hip noodle joints, old time pizza twirlers in the window right next to some grubby, florescent lit grease trap. Very beatnik and since I like beatnik-ish and transitional it was just fine with me. If you want more upscale you can walk a little further or take the trolly/bus a mile or so away to Union Square for that, so all in all I thought the location was very good. The entire trip and especially The Opal exceeded my expectations.
