Historic hotel and spacious suites -- walking distance to Union Square

Dating back to 1908, this five-story Union Square hotel still boasts the stained glass windows, period antiques and other decorative touches that hearken back to a simpler time. Rooms are clean and efficient; spacious work desks are popular among business travelers. Other amenities include a complimentary on-site fitness center and 24-hour coffee and tea service, as well as a complimentary breakfast buffet.

A baby grand piano welcomes visitors to the lobby of The Opal -- a public area decorated to invoke the way it looked when the hotel debuted in 1908. Elsewhere on the property is a 24-hour laundry facility (fees apply) and car rental desk (fees apply; rentals also can be facilitated by the concierge).

All guests have complimentary access to a state-of-the-art on-site fitness center. Guests also are entitled to a complimentary breakfast buffet every morning.

After a long day exploring the city, grab a milkshake and a tuna melt at the on-site outpost of Mel's Drive-In, a 1950s-style diner that has become a San Francisco institution. The restaurant is open 24 hours on weekends.

Old and Musty

The hotel was ok for the price. It was a decent value for a hotel in San Francisco. My only complaint really was the musty smell as you enter the front lobby and hallways. Room was nice with no smell.

Add 34.00 per day to park your car at the hotel, otherwise good value and very nice breakfast spread

Great Place to stay

We were very comforatable at the hotel. The bus stop is right in front of the hotel, so it is easy to get anywhere.

wonderful stay

we visit most of san francisco and had a great time. the muni bus stop was on every other block and arrived on time every time. really didn't have a reason for a car rental not unless you want to leave the city. the staff at the hotel was helpful and friendly every time i spoke with them, they even took pics of my partner and i. one thing that was kinda over played was the breakfast at the hotel it really wasn't a buffet, more like a continental breakfast and it ended a hour to early (9:30am). over all great stay. Also if your looking for a big room this may not be the place for you. P.S. Mels drive in below the hotel not the best and kinda over price and may close earlier than posted.

take a short sub way or cable car ride to orphan andy's on castro street. Great staff, great food, great area.
