Good deal
Had a conference in downtown, which was 8-9 blocks away. Could walk in 20 min, but when in rush, took the bus. Good deal and friendly staff members. Small room, big bed, clean bathroom.

A great value!
The Opal is a great find for a cost-conscious visitor. It's located on the edge of the seedy and nice parts of town. One block in the wrong direction and you're in ghetto. One block in opposite direction and you're in a pleasant neighborhood. The building is dated but the staff are very friendly. The rooms are small but clean. The good news is you are on a major bus route to take you anywhere you want to go quickly. Best of all, the price is 1/3 of other hotels in the area. If I was looking for a place to stay "on the cheap" in San Francisco, I'd definitely stay here again.

Tired, needs updating
I stayed four nights at the Opal recently. I found the hotel decor in need of updating. My room was generally clean with the decor (carpet, furniture, bed) in need of updating. It also had an unpleasant odor, similar to one after your house is fumigated. Given all this, I was disappointed in the accommodations and will not stay again at the Opal.

meeting in SF
Nice old SF hotel to stay for 3 d meeting. Aging a bit. Staff accommodated me when I requested a room away from the main street. QUIET with good double pane windows. Good bed but I prefer feather pillow. garage on site a little pricey but convenient. Light continential breakfast OK. Theater and many small restaurants near. Great value.

Good Value Business/Personal Getaway
Although a bit further from where I thought I would be - access was easily obtained by taking the bus. The hotel staff was very pleasant and accommodating. The room was adequate, comfortable and great value for the price. I would definitely stay there again.

Friendly hotel in reasonable location
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Decor is on the dated side though rooms kept clean. Offered breakfast was limited and monotonous though good diner next door is an alternative. Some street noise though not excessive. On the pricey side for what is offered but this seems a characteristic of San Francisco hotels in general.

Good overall stay
The hotel is nice. It is located a few blocks away from Japan Town and relatively close walking distance to other areas of town. It is an older hotel so you can feel the age and the walls are not particularly thick. Be prepared to have your neighbour wake you up with their shower. Overall though it was good value for what I needed.
