Good hotel, open to improvements

The rooms are comfortable, well maintainted, good internet facility - fast and uninterrupted. The breakfast options were minimal, with few items to chose from. Allocating the parking lots need to be improved. We had to park in an open lot for one night, even though we were allocated a parking lot - someone else had parked in the lot. However, we were able to park the next night in our lot!

BEWARE OF HIDDEN COST

WE WERE TOTALLY SUPPRISE THAT WE HAD TO PAY $25 PER DAY TO PARK AT THE HOTEL. ALL OTHER HOTELS IN THE NEIGBORHOOD WERE FREE INCLUDING THE ONE NEXT DOOR. WE HAD END UP TO PAID OVER $100 FOR THE PARKING AT THE HOTEL. I THINK THAT NOT RIGHT FOR CUSTOMER TO PAY THAT MUCH FOR THE PARKING.

My review of The Opal

The location of The Opal hotel was very nice. The room amenities were good - bottled water was provided and there was an in-room iron/ironing board. The in-room internet access was nice. There was an additional blanket for the cool nights. The only downfall was that there was a couple in the room either next to us or in front of us that was noisy. The first night we were there, we heard the woman crying and the man trying to convince her to get back into the room. The second night we were there, she was giggling uncontrollably. The third night they were just talkative in general. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay.

There is Village Pizzeria located just up the hill and across the street and Kyoto Sushi with reasonably priced sushi. My husband enjoyed their 99 cent glass of Sapporro!

Friendly staff

The Opal is a good deal, if you want a hotel in a central location of San Francisco. It's comfortable with a very friendly staff. The room was large enough and the furnishings are quite good. You have to notice the additional price for car parking!

Average Business trip

Internet wasn't very fast, and sometimes didn't work at all. Neighborhood was not very good/safe it seemed. Not ideal for a buisnessman by himself. Dinner options were very limited near hotel. Good for the price but I wouldn't stay there again. It was very loud on Friday night also.

A little out of the way, but good

The Opal is convenient only to the theatre district. If that's not what you're after, you'll have a good walk or bus ride wherever you're going. There's a lot of San Fran charm to the place, though, and the upside of its location is that it's a great deal. With these rates, however, you can find yourself having to deal with some noisy folks occasionally.

Great value & location! Memorable visit.

Friendly, knowledgable staff. Close to all the sights. Cable car 4 blocks away; rode every day. Didn't need car. Room was a good size with full bath. Pleasantly suprised and pleased with last minute accommodations. I would highly recommend this comfortable, modest hotel.

Wonderful Stay in S.F.

We stayed for a week at the Opal, for a combincation business/vacation trip. My husband has walking difficulties, and the location was great for him. The rooms are gorgeous, with large marble walk-in showers. We were moved after the first night to a smoking room, which was apparently a separate hotel at some time. Even so, the rooms were decorated & appointed the same, but not quite as elegant. The front desk staff was very accomodating & knowledgeable, and there were plenty of local maps & travel guides available at no charge. The morning breakfast is simple (coffee, teas, cocoa, milk, 3 kinds of cereal, plain bagels & a flavored bread) but adequate. My only complaint with the hotel is the bathroom amenities. There was no soap dish in either bathroom, and the shampoo comes in a small disposable envelope. No conditioner, and the same small envelope of body lotion. For a hotel of this caliber, they really should provide a soap dish and decent bathroom amenities. The hotel lobby is beautiful and a very pleasant spot to wait for a traveling companion or plan an outing. There are bus stops directly in front of and across the street from this hotel, on all sides. There are good restaurants within alking distance, as well as a great 50's-style diner attached to the hotel (think "American Graffiti"). All in all, a great locaiton, a comfortable room, and a friendly, helpful staff.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Check out Tommy's Joint directly across the street. great drinks, excellent food, and huge servings. Don't be put off by a line out the door - it will disappear within minutes. Also, for something truly unique and unexpected, try "La Fina Estancia" (or something close to that) across Geary on the opposite corner. It offers a combination of Peruvian and Mexican food that is beyond description. It is fairly small, but the decor and staff are sure to please.
